Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) are widely utilised non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasmas with a diverse range of applications, such as material processing, surface treatment, light sources, pollution control, and medicine. Over the course of several decades, extensive research has been dedicated to the generation of homogeneous DBD (H-DBD), focussing on understanding the transition from H-DBD to filamentary DBD and exploring strategies to create and sustain H-DBD. This paper first discusses the influence of various parameters on DBD, including gas flow, dielectric material, surface conductivity, and mesh electrode. Secondly, a chronological literature review is presented, highlighting the development of H-DBD and the …

Fluid Model Of Plasma-Liquid Interaction: The Effect Of Interfacial Boundary Conditions And Henry's Law Constants, Yifan Liu, Dingxin Liu, Jishen Zhang, Bowen Sun, Santu Luo, Hao Zhang, Li Guo, Mingzhe Rong, Michael G. Kong

Bioelectrics Publications

Plasma–liquid interaction is a critical area of plasma science, mainly because much remains unknown about the physicochemical processes occurring at the plasma–liquid interface. Besides a lot of experimental studies toward the interaction, a few fluid models have also been reported in recent years. However, the interfacial boundary conditions in the models are different and the Henry's law constants therein are uncertain; hence, the accuracy and robustness of the simulation results are doubtable. In view of this, three 1D fluid models are developed for the interaction between a plasma jet and deionized water, each of which has a unique interfacial boundary …

Discharge characteristic comparisons between He and Ar plasma jets have been extensively reported, but is rarely reported for the comprehensive study of discharge mode transition from He jet to Ar jet, especially its induced liquid chemistry and biological effect. In this paper, we investigate the plasma jet mode transformation by varying the Ar contents in the He/Ar mixing working gas, particularly focusing on the effect of liquid chemistry of plasma activated water (PAW) and the corresponding inactivation effect against tumor cells in vitro. The mode transition process from He jet to Ar jet is characterized by the discharge images, …

Due to increasing concentrations in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide has, in recent times, been targeted for utilisation (Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage, CCUS). In particular, the production of CO from CO2 has been an area of intense interest, particularly since the CO can be utilized in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. Herein we report that CO2 can also be used as a source of atomic oxygen that is efficiently harvested and used as a waste-free terminal oxidant for the oxidation of alkenes to epoxides. Simultaneously, the process yields CO. Utilization of the atomic oxygen does not only generate a valuable product, …

The principal bioeffect of the nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) is a lasting cell membrane permeabilization, which is often attributed to the formation of nanometer-sized pores. Such pores may be too small for detection by the uptake of fluorescent dyes. We tested if Ca2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Ba2+ ions can be used as nanoporation markers. Time-lapse imaging was performed in CHO, BPAE, and HEK cells loaded with Fluo-4, Calbryte, or Fluo-8 dyes. Ca2+ and Ba2+ did not change fluorescence in intact cells, whereas their entry after nsPEF increased fluorescence within <1 ms. The threshold for one 300-ns pulse was at 1.5–2 kV/cm, much lower than >7 …

Paper-Based Flexible Electrode Using Chemically-Modified Graphene And Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composites For Electrophysiological Signal Sensing, Md Faruk Hossain, Jae Sang Heo, John Nelson, Insoo Kim Oct 2019

Paper-Based Flexible Electrode Using Chemically-Modified Graphene And Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composites For Electrophysiological Signal Sensing, Md Faruk Hossain, Jae Sang Heo, John Nelson, Insoo Kim

Bioelectrics Publications

Flexible paper-based physiological sensor electrodes were developed using chemically-modified graphene (CG) and carboxylic-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube composites (f@MWCNTs). A solvothermal process with additional treatment was conducted to synthesize CG and f@MWCNTs to make CG-f@MWCNT composites. The composite was sonicated in an appropriate solvent to make a uniform suspension, and then it was drop cast on a nylon membrane in a vacuum filter. A number of batches (0%~35% f@MWCNTs) were prepared to investigate the performance of the physical characteristics. The 25% f@MWCNT-loaded composite showed the best adhesion on the paper substrate. The surface topography and chemical bonding of the proposed CG-f@MWCNT …

Investigation On The Rons And Bactericidal Effects Induced By He + O2 Cold Plasma Jets: In Open Air And In An Airtight Chamber, Han Xu, Dingxin Liu, Weitao Wang, Zhijie Liu, Li Guo, Mingzhe Rong, Michael G. Kong Nov 2018

Kong

He + O2 plasma jets in open air and in an airtight chamber are comparatively studied, with respect to their production of gaseous/aqueous reactive species and their antibacterial effects. Under the same discharge power, the plasma jet in open air has higher densities of gaseous reactive species and a higher concentration of aqueous H2O2 but lower concentrations of aqueous OH and O2-. In addition, the increase in the O2 ratio in He in both plasma jets causes a linear decrease in the population of gaseous reactive species, except for O(3p5P) …

Gelatin gels are used as surrogates of human tissues to study their barrier effects on incoming reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) generated by surface air discharge. The penetration depth of nitrite into gelatin gel is measured in real time during plasma treatment, and the permeabilities of nitrite, nitrate, O3 and H2O2 through gelatin gel films are quantified by measuring their concentrations in the water underneath such films after plasma treatment. It is found that the penetration speed of nitrite increases linearly with the mass fraction of water in the gelatin gels, and the permeabilities of …

A Novel Pulsed Corona Discharge Reactor Based On Surface Streamers For No Conversion From N2-O2 Mixture Gases, M. A. Malik, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A novel pulsed corona discharge reactor is described which utilizes surface-plasma along insulating surfaces. The electrodes are comprised of a stainless steel wire anode of 150 µm diameter stretched along the surface of a glass sheet and two parallel aluminum strips as cathodes. An eight-stage Marx bank, which provides 60 ns, 40-45 kV monopolar pulses, was used to produce the surface streamers in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures at atmospheric pressure. With increasing oxygen content, the energy efficiency for NO2 and O3 synthesis was found to increase. The energy efficiency is almost the same for the surface-plasma and volume-plasma. However, the surface-plasma was …
