Low friction doesn’t mean the pavement (asphalt or concrete) needs to be replaced. Safe friction enhancing treatments are available at a fraction of the cost of new pavement. Helicopter Air Ambulances (HAA) are a vital component of the healthcare system by bridging the gap between traditional ground-based ambulances and hospitals and transporting patients from remote areas to medical facilities. However, the accident rates during aeromedical transports remain high compared to other commercial air operations. This session presents an analysis of HAA accidents from the human factors perspective and changes in regulation, technology, and training during HAA operations over the last decade.

The Indianapolis International Airport was at capacity for overnight aircraft parking at the terminal gates and the existing terminal apron. The solution required the design and construction of a new remain overnight (RON) parking apron with space for up to seven commercial aircrafts simultaneously. The project entailed extensive utility relocations, grading and drainage, concrete and asphalt paving, and airfield electrical. Runway 1-19: Greensburg Municipal Airport’S New 5,405-Ft Runway:, John Feister, Jeremy Books

The Greensburg Municipal Airport completed the construction of Runway 1-19 on a new alignment in 2022. Runway 1-19 is 5,405-ft long × 100-ft wide and replaced the existing Runway 18-36 that was 3,430-ft long × 40-ft wide. This was a multi-year construction project with a broad scope that included land acquisition; construction in a flood-way; grading and drainage; paving and electrical; and extensive FAA coordination. Challenges and successes will be discussed.

The prevalence of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) has grown dramatically in recent years. With increasing UASs, an important consideration is UAS sightings around airports. A UAS sighting may result in an airport delay or shutdown, which disrupts airport operations and can lead to significant economic losses. This presentation discusses the characteristics of UAS sightings based on reports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and how these UAS sightings relate to airport operations.

There are currently more than 572,000 registered pilots in the United States, ranging from commercial UAS pilots to commercial manned aircraft. Although pilots are registered in each of the 50 states, where they live and reside can be seen through various forms of geospatial statistical analysis in a geographic information system. This talk explores spatial patterns of the FAA U.S. Airmen database through hotspot and cluster-based analysis of the database.

To date, a few operational efforts have been launched by the FAA to mitigate wildlife strikes away from the airport jurisdiction, and those do not include actions by general aviation (GA) pilots. This presentation explores the safety training of GA pilots using aeronautical decision-making concepts as a strategy to mitigate the risk of mishaps due to birds. Previous research, the FAA Serial Report #22, and final reports of GA aircraft accidents due to birds will be covered.

Essential Air Service (EAS) is a U.S. government subsidy program which ensures maintenance of commercial airline services in small deregulated communities. The program’s budget currently is around $250 million annually, which is used as subsidy for airlines to maintain a minimal level of scheduled air service in relatively smaller airports. It is evident that 2% of the FAA budget is being spent to maintain air service in smaller communities, but there is not enough evidence to prove that all the current decisions made by Congress about EAS are advantageous. ADS-B Applications for General Aviation Airports—ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) Out will soon be required for aircraft operating in most assigned airspace categories. ADS-B data are more accessible for analysis than data from flight data monitoring devices and can potentially be used to improve airport operations. General aviation airports need low-cost, effective solutions. In this session we explore data from ADS-B technologies that support operations counting, landing/takeoff cycle characterization, and landing fee assessment, and that potentially identify areas of operational concern.

Undesirable hot surface ignition of flammable liquids is one of the hazards in ground and air transportation vehicles, which primarily occurs in the engine compartment. In order to evaluate the safety and sustainability of candidate replacement fuels with respect to hot surface ignition, a baseline low lead fuel (Avgas 100 LL) and four experimental unleaded aviation fuels recommended for reciprocating aviation engines were considered. In addition, hot surface ignition properties of the gas turbine fuels Jet-A, JP-8, and JP-5 were measured. In recent decades, commercial aviation accidents have occurred due to human-machine interaction (HMI) problems known as “mode confusion.” This is caused, in some cases, by a lack of understanding of onboard systems by pilots. Large amounts of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) data are available, analysis of which could assist in identification of safety risks in daily operations. Through analysis of pilot reactions and recorded aircraft data, methods to detect mode confusion are developed to improve aviation safety.
