Simulating Dielectric Barrier Plasma Actuators With Varying Geometries, Cass Wiederkehr May 2023

Simulating Dielectric Barrier Plasma Actuators With Varying Geometries, Cass Wiederkehr

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The idea of Ionic Wind Propulsion has long been a topic of research for whether or not it can be used as a practical power source for flight. MIT researchers proved in 2018 that a plane with zero moving parts powered by Ionic Wind Propulsion was possible, and sustained flight could work with an internal power supply. However, due to the thin wire electrodes required to generate the ion cloud that made such propulsion possible, large amounts of drag rendered the plane extremely inefficient and impractical. Dielectric Barrier Discharge Devices (DBDs) are being investigated as to whether they can serve …

Design And Evaluation Of High Power, High Efficiency And High Power Density Motor Drives For More Electric Aircrafts, Zhao Yuan Dec 2020

Design And Evaluation Of High Power, High Efficiency And High Power Density Motor Drives For More Electric Aircrafts, Zhao Yuan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

More-electric aircraft (MEA) is an attractive concept as it can reduce carbon dioxide emission, relieve fossil-fuel consumption, improve the overall efficiency of aircraft, and reduce the operational costs. However, it poses substantial challenges in designing a high-performance motor drive system for such applications. In the report of Aircraft Technology Roadmap to 2050, the propulsion converter is required to be ultra-high efficiency, high power density, and high reliability. Though the wide band-gap devices, such as the Silicon-carbide based Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect (SiC-MOSFET), shows better switching performance and improved high-temperature performance compared to the silicon counterparts, applying it to the …

Smart Gate Driver Design For Silicon (Si) Igbts And Silicon-Carbide (Sic) Mosfets, Abdulaziz Alghanem May 2016

Smart Gate Driver Design For Silicon (Si) Igbts And Silicon-Carbide (Sic) Mosfets, Abdulaziz Alghanem

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The design of an efficient and smart gate driver for a Si IGBT and SiC MOSFET is addressed in thesis. First, the main IGBT parameters are evaluated thoroughly in order to understand their effects in the design of the gate driver. All known consequences of previously designed gate drivers are studied in order to achieve an optimum gate driver. As a result of this assessment, the designer is able to determine whether adding or removing components from the gate driver circuit are beneficial or not. Then, exhaustive research is done to identify suitable integrated circuits to use for the power …
