Characterization Of Hydraulic Interactions Between Torque Converter And Transmission During Transient Events, Mark Woodland Jan 2019

Characterization Of Hydraulic Interactions Between Torque Converter And Transmission During Transient Events, Mark Woodland

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A torque converter was instrumented with 29 pressure transducers to measure the torus, clutch plate, and torque converter cavities using telemetry to transfer the data. The torque converter was placed in a six-speed front wheel drive transmission and a test cell was built to drive and load the transmission to mimic in-vehicle performance.

Steady state tests were completed to establish a baseline for pressure performance of the torque converter. The transient events tested include back drive and gear shifting. Back drive showed how the pressure fluctuates across the speed ratios above 1 as well as identifying the stator speed. Gear …

Continuously Variable Transmission Design, Nicholas Wurst Jan 2018

Continuously Variable Transmission Design, Nicholas Wurst

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Continuously variable transmissions (CVT's) have been an alternative to traditional transmissions for internal combustion gas or diesel engines. They allow for an infinite number of gear ratios for better fuel economy and performance. One drawback to the CVT is that the belt between the two pulleys often wears or fails prematurely causing the entire CVT to need to be replaced. An alternative method for creating infinite gear ratios within a certain range without the need for a belt is the main objective of this project. The goal of the alternative design is to provide a concept that proves a CVT …

Model Based Vehicle Simulation For Electrically Actuated Transmission Test Cells, Kenneth L. Gruel Apr 2016

Model Based Vehicle Simulation For Electrically Actuated Transmission Test Cells, Kenneth L. Gruel

Masters Theses

The Eaton Vehicle Group is responsible for the development of a large family of automotive products, including manual and automated manual transmissions for light, medium, and heavy duty vehicles. To further expand the transmission testing capabilities at Vehicle Group headquarters, the Vehicle Simulator system was developed and integrated into an existing motor-based test cell. System development time and cost were reduced by leveraging readily available vehicle models and real-time hardware. The Vehicle Simulator system allows a user to control the speed and torque settings of the test cell motors in manual mode, or switch the motors to vehicle emulation mode. …

Design And Fabrication Of Rear Suspension And Drivetrain For Union College's Sae Baja Car, Nicholas W. Oren Jun 2011

Design And Fabrication Of Rear Suspension And Drivetrain For Union College's Sae Baja Car, Nicholas W. Oren

Honors Theses

My senior project is to design and fabricate the rear suspension and drivetrain for Union College’s SAE Baja car. This project started with the determination of the optimum style of suspension and drivetrain for use on the vehicle. I worked with a company to obtain a custom-built transmission, and I successfully designed the drivetrain to use this transmission. I also designed the frame of the Baja car required to mount these elements. Finally, I designed the rear suspension of the car. The drivetrain design incorporates a 5-speed sequential transmission with a reverse. This transmission is driven by a centrifugal clutch …
