Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann Oct 2023

Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Rigid body motion requires formulations where rotational and translational motion are accounted for appropriately. Two Lie groups, the special orthogonal group SO(3) and the space of quaternions H, are commonly used to represent attitude. When considering rigid body pose, that is spacecraft position and attitude, the special Euclidean group SE(3) and the space of dual quaternions DH are frequently utilized. All these groups are Lie groups and Riemannian manifolds, and these identifications have profound implications for dynamics and controls. The trajectory optimization and optimal control problem on Riemannian manifolds presents significant opportunities for theoretical development. Riemannian optimization is an attractive …

Autonomous Space Surveillance For Arbitrary Domains, David Zuehlke Apr 2023

Autonomous Space Surveillance For Arbitrary Domains, David Zuehlke

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Space is becoming increasingly congested every day and the task of accurately tracking satellites is paramount for the continued safe operation of both manned and unmanned space missions. In addition to new spacecraft launches, satellite break-up events and collisions generate large amounts of orbital debris dramatically increasing the number of orbiting objects with each such event. In order to prevent collisions and protect both life and property in orbit, accurate knowledge of the position of orbiting objects is necessary. Space Domain Awareness (SDA) used interchangeably with Space Situational Awareness (SSA), are the names given to the daunting task of tracking …

Dynamic Analysis Of Cubesat Impact On Lunar Surface, Dalton C. Korczyk Apr 2022

Dynamic Analysis Of Cubesat Impact On Lunar Surface, Dalton C. Korczyk

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

EagleCam is a pico-satellite (CubeSat) with dimensions of 100 x 100 x 150 mm3 that is going to the moon as a payload of the Intuitive Machines Nova-C lunar lander. The CubeSat’s purpose is to record the lunar landing from a 3rd person view. Unlike other CubeSats, EagleCam is designed to impact the lunar surface and there is no history to build off of. Specifically, EagleCam will need to survive a 30 m drop onto the lunar surface with all internal components fully operational post impact. This thesis is focused on the analytical, numerical, and experimental methods for determining the …

Satellite Deceleration Using Gravity Assist From Asteroid, Nicolas M. Prulhiere Dec 2021

Satellite Deceleration Using Gravity Assist From Asteroid, Nicolas M. Prulhiere

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Satellites have used gravity assists to increase their speed when exploring the solar system. This same maneuver can be done but with the objective to slow down the satellites. This has been theorized to slow down asteroids using the moon to capture them in earth’s orbit. My goal is to determine if asteroids can be used to provide a change in speed great enough to the point that after multiple of these maneuvers the satellite can come to a stop. By being able to slow down and stop a satellite without having to use thrusters will allow the mass allocated …

Adaptive Control For Nonlinear, Time Varying Systems, John Zelina May 2021

Adaptive Control For Nonlinear, Time Varying Systems, John Zelina

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

It is common for aerospace systems to exhibit nonlinear, time varying dynamics. This thesis investigates the development of adaptive control laws to stabilize and control a class of nonlinear, time varying systems. Direct adaptive control architectures are implemented in order to compensate for time varying dynamics that could, for example, be caused by varying inertia resulting from fuel slosh or settling in a tank. The direct adaptive controller can also respond to external disturbances and unmodeled or nonlinear dynamics. Simulation results are presented for a prototype system that consists of two rotating tanks with time varying inertia due to the …

Design Of An Attitude Control System For A Spacecraft With Propellant Slosh Dynamics, Nolan Coulter Dec 2018

Design Of An Attitude Control System For A Spacecraft With Propellant Slosh Dynamics, Nolan Coulter

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The presence of propellant slosh dynamics in a spacecraft system during a maneuver leads to attitude control system (ACS) performance degradation resulting in attitude tracking errors and instability. As spacecraft missions become more complex and involve longer durations, a substantial propellant mass is required to achieve the mission objectives and perform orbital maneuvers. When the propellant tanks are only partially filled, the liquid fuel moves inside the tanks with translational and rotational accelerations generating the slosh dynamics. This research effort performs a comparative study with different optimal control techniques and a novel application of a model reference artificial immune system …

The Effect Of Surface Materials And Morphology On Wingsuit Aerodynamics, Timothy Allen Sestak May 2017

The Effect Of Surface Materials And Morphology On Wingsuit Aerodynamics, Timothy Allen Sestak

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This study examines the aerodynamic effects of the materials, textiles, and morphologies currently used in wingsuit design and construction. The experiment was a low-speed wind tunnel investigation using a rigid wing with an aspect ratio of 2, a NACA 4418 airfoil cross section and a smooth, polished painted surface as a baseline. The baseline wing was modified by covering the upper and lower surfaces with various textiles currently used in wingsuit construction. This study is the first step in continued research to design and build a wingsuit with superior glide performance compared to current designs. Surface textures and features on …

Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar Dec 2015

Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Thermal Protection systems (TPS) are used as shields in space vehicles which encounter high heat and temperatures at the reentry altitudes. Among them, the cooling techniques and the ablative coatings are most popular. However, they have their own weight limitations. In the recent decade, another classification of TPS called the Non-Ablative Thermal Protection systems (NaTPS) have gained significance. The spike-lateral jet method is an NaTPS concept proposed for drag and heat flux reduction in hypersonic nose cones. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the effectiveness of spike-lateral jet concept at re-entry altitudes. The spike attached to the hemispherical nose has …
