Optimization Of Railroad Bearing Health Monitoring System For Wireless Utilization, Jonas Cuanang, Constantine Tarawneh, Martin Amaro Jr., Jennifer Lima, Heinrich D. Foltz

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the railroad industry, systematic health inspections of freight railcar bearings are required. Bearings are subjected to high loads and run at high speeds, so over time the bearings may develop a defect that can potentially cause a derailment if left in service operation. Current bearing condition monitoring systems include Hot-Box Detectors (HBDs) and Trackside Acoustic Detection Systems (TADS™). The commonly used HBDs use non-contact infrared sensors to detect abnormal temperatures of bearings as they pass over the detector. Bearing temperatures that are about 94°C above ambient conditions will trigger an alarm indicating that the bearing must be removed from …

Use Of Dimpling Techniques To Alter The Vibration And Acoustic Characteristics Of Beams And Plates, Mofareh Ghazwani

Dissertations

Structures such as beams and plates can produce potentially high levels of unwanted vibrations and noises in the environment. A method for improving the vibroacoustic characteristics of structures based on creating dimples on its surfaces is presented in this study. The goal of this technique is to keep the mass of the subject structure the same while changing its vibration and sound radiation characteristics. A boundary value model (BVM), derived using Hamilton’s Variational Principle, is used for modeling dimpled beams subjected to various boundary conditions. Using this method, the non-dimensional equations of motion, boundary conditions, and continuity conditions for a …

It is established that the dynamic reaction of hereditarily deformable systems to an arbitrary form of random perturbations can also be …

Eeg Characterization Of Sensorimotor Networks: Implications In Stroke, Dylan Blake Snyder Apr 2020

Eeg Characterization Of Sensorimotor Networks: Implications In Stroke, Dylan Blake Snyder

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this dissertation was to use electroencephalography (EEG) to characterize sensorimotor networks and examine the effects of stroke on sensorimotor networks. Sensorimotor networks play an essential role in completion of everyday tasks, and when damaged, as in stroke survivors, the successful completion of seemingly simple motor tasks becomes fantasy. When sensorimotor networks are impaired as a result of stroke, varying degrees of sensorimotor deficits emerge, most often including loss of sensation and difficulty generating upper extremity movements. Although sensory therapies, such as the application of tendon vibration, have been shown to reduce the sensorimotor deficits after stroke, the …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

There is a need for more in depth understanding of the consolidation effect of concrete on its durability, especially in tropical climates. During placement of fresh concrete in molds vibration is required to prevent quality problems such as honeycombs and desegregation. Nevertheless, precise monitoring of concrete vibration time has been avoided by construction professionals. This results in concrete durability reduction of appropriately designed concrete due to variation in aggregate settlement, air void content and change in water to cement ratio. In this study, the effects of vibration time on concrete strength, aggregate segregation, and physical properties were experimentally investigated on …

An Optical-Based Technique To Obtain Vibration Characteristics Of Rotating Tires, Aakash Mange, Theresa Atkinson, Jennifer Bastiaan, Javad Baqersad

Mechanical Engineering Publications

The dynamic characteristics of tires are critical in the overall vibrations of vehicles because the tire-road interface is the only medium of energy transfer between the vehicle and the road surface. Obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the tire helps in improving the comfort of the passengers. The vibrational characteristics of structures are usually obtained by performing conventional impact hammer modal testing, in which the structure is excited with an impact hammer and the response of the structure under excitation is captured using accelerometers. However, this approach only provides the response of the structure at a few discrete …

Technical science and innovation

Studies are often conducted to minimize the effect of vibration on equipment and its mechanisms. Since the engine is the main driving force of all technical objects, vibration is one of the factors hindering its operation. With this in mind, this article investigated the random probability distribution of vibration parameters using the laws of mathematical statistical distribution and was found to be compatible with the normal distribution law. At the same time, this study demonstrates that the proposed method of technical diagnostics can be used to assess helicopter engine failures.
