Application Of Tensile Testing Machine For Measurement Of Skin Friction Coefficient, Jeremy Silver-Mahr Aug 2022

Application Of Tensile Testing Machine For Measurement Of Skin Friction Coefficient, Jeremy Silver-Mahr

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Traditionally fluid drag associated with skin friction is conducted by the measurement of constrained fluid flow across a textured surface. This works well for easy-to-handle fluids such as water and oil, however it is less feasible for fluids such as liquid metals. A device that measures the drag force on a surface through a static fluid would allow for different fluid types and sample geometries to be tested. A fish scale pattern consisted of overlapping repeating circular planes 3mm in diameter angled to achieve 0.14mm of depth was embossed onto a PMMA sheet. A control sample of smooth PMMA was …

Synthesizing Maritime Interaction Scenarios For Testing Autonomy, Benjamin E. Hargis, Yiannis E. Papelis Apr 2022

Synthesizing Maritime Interaction Scenarios For Testing Autonomy, Benjamin E. Hargis, Yiannis E. Papelis

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

This paper presents a method to deterministically synthesize maritime traffic interactions that can be presented to a system under test regardless of the state of the system under test. A background to the problem is given and the method is briefly outlined. Results indicate that the approach can enable more robust evaluation of maritime autonomous algorithms.

Validation Framework For Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, Mustafa Akbas Ph.D. Mar 2020

Validation Framework For Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, Mustafa Akbas Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Autonomous aerial vehicles (AAV) have the potential to have market disruptions for various industries such as ground delivery and aerial transportation. Hence, the USAF has called for increased level of autonomy and rapid progress is being made in artificial intelligence (AI) engines, complex and non-deterministic system components, which are at the core of the autonomous aerial platforms. Traditional testing and validation methods fall short of satisfying the requirement of testing such complex systems. Therefore, to achieve highly or fully autonomous capabilities, a major leap forward in the validation is required. Otherwise, the full capabilities of autonomy will not be realized. …

Using Long-Term Outdoor Exposure Data To Benchmark Accelerated Durability Test Methods, R. Hooton Nov 2019

Using Long-Term Outdoor Exposure Data To Benchmark Accelerated Durability Test Methods, R. Hooton

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Many performance-based durability test methods adopted in various national and international standards were developed decades ago based on short-term evaluations. Most durability tests use various methods to accelerate reactions in order to obtain results in a reasonably short period of time. Then pass/fail criteria are set for these tests in standard specifications. However, the acceleration techniques used maybe overly severe, and preclude the use of concrete materials and mix designs that perform perfectly well in the field. The inclusion of long-term field tests or outdoor exposure tests can be used to verify the appropriateness of both the test methods and …

Fib Model Code 2020 – Durability Design And Through Life Management Of New And Existing Structures, Frank Papworth, S Matthews Nov 2019

Fib Model Code 2020 – Durability Design And Through Life Management Of New And Existing Structures, Frank Papworth, S Matthews

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Work has recently started in fib (Fédération Internationale du Béton) on the preparation of a new fib Model Code for Concrete Structures, under the working title of Model Code 2020 (MC2020). This will be a single code dealing with both new and existing concrete structures, that is both the design of new structures and all the activities associated with the assessment, interventions and the through-life management and care of existing concrete structures. Numerous goals relating to durability and service life design have been identified, including that ideally MC2020 should incorporate:

• Better models for deterioration processes addressing issues such as …

ASEE IL-IN Section Conference

This custom wrist orthosis project is the continuation of efforts made by students in the R.B Annis School of Engineering during the 2017-2018 academic year. Throughout this project, we have implemented the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology to guide the design process. Within the R.B. Annis School of Engineering, this methodology has been adapted into guide the DesignSpine process. We have designed a new orthosis that is custom fabricated for enhanced patient comfort. In the occupational therapy field, patients have reportedly not been wearing their prescribed orthoses/braces, which are designed to stabilize injured areas so that they heal properly. …

Planning, Development And Application Of Mechatronics Systems As Students Work, Muzafer Shala, Valmir Hoxha Nov 2015

Planning, Development And Application Of Mechatronics Systems As Students Work, Muzafer Shala, Valmir Hoxha

UBT International Conference

In Kosovo universities in general there is a lack of students practical work, this fact is one of the reasons why in Kosovo are no sufficient number of professionals to fill the market needs. The aim of this work is to go through the steps of conceptualisation, development and application of a Mechatronics Systems with students. Also in this project students work on all the phases of the work which we consider to be of great benefit. The work was organised as it would be on a real life company, students were split on groups and the groups worked in …

Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma Oct 2013

Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Although being able to provide much cleaner power than burning coal and other fossil fuels, nuclear power plants are still a tough sell to the general public due to their history of being spontaneously dangerous. The containment structures surrounding these nuclear plants, however, can play a huge role in reducing the risks associated with them. Relatively new designs for these containment assemblies, known as SC (steel-concrete composite) structures, aim to increase the strength and durability of the containment facilities while keeping costs down. By varying the spacing between shear studs, the ratio of concrete to steel, and the ratio of …

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik Aug 2009

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

In this paper, we present and compare two-stage type-2 fuzzy logic advisor (FLA) for subjective decision making in the domain of students' performance evaluation. We test our proposed model for evaluating students' performance in our computer science and engineering department at HBCC/KFUPM in two domains namely cooperating training and capstone/senior project assessment where we find these FLAs very useful and promising. In our proposed model, the assessment criteria for different components of cooperative training and senior project are transformed into linguistic labels and evaluation information is extracted into the form of IF-THEN rules from the experts. These rules are modeled …
