Calibrating Engineering Graduate Capabilities Against Assessment Tasks: A Preliminary Study, Long Nghiem, Maureen Bell

This paper investigated the connection between assessment tasks and graduate capabilities. Surveys conducted as part of this study revealed differences in planning for the development of, and student achievement of, graduate capabilities and that assessment tasks were valuable tools to guide and facilitate the development of intended graduate capabilities. Drawing from the obtained data, a prototype framework for curriculum design was proposed, allowing for better alignment of assessment tasks and graduate capability development in systematic subject design.

Skin dose is often the quantity of interest for radiological protection, as the skin is the organ that receives maximum dose during kilovoltage X-ray irradiations. The purpose of this study was to simulate the energy response and the depth dose water equivalence of the MOSkin radiation detector (Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP), University of Wollongong, Australia), a MOSFET-based radiation sensor with a novel packaging design, at clinical kilovoltage photon energies typically used for superficial/orthovoltage therapy and X-ray CT imaging. The increasing use of MRI-guided radiation therapy evokes the necessity to investigate the potential impact of a magnetic field on the biological effectiveness of therapeutic radiation beams. While it is known that a magnetic field, applied during irradiation, can improve the macroscopic absorbed dose distribution of electrons in the tumor region, effects on the microscopic distribution of energy depositions and ionizations have not yet been investigated. An application of Medipix2 using a newly developed segmented multiple thickness polyethylene (PE) converter for fast neutron detection is presented. The system has the ability to provide an energy independent response for the dose equivalent for fast neutrons. The application of weighting factors to each defined thickness of PE allows for a flattening of the response of the detector system for dosimetry applications. Six PE converter segments were applied, and their thicknesses and weighting factors were optimised to obtain the required energy independent detector response. The study performed by means of GEANT4. Monte Carlo simulations of the energy response of a conventionally packaged single metal-oxide field effect transistors (MOSFET) detector were performed with the goal of improving MOSFET energy dependence for personal accident or military dosimetry. The MOSFET detector packaging was optimised. Two different ‘drop-in’ design packages for a single MOSFET detector were modelled and optimised using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo toolkit. This paper presents a novel shear-stiffened elastomer (SSE) fabricated with a mixture of silicone rubber and silicone oil. A total of four SSE samples were fabricated in this study. Their mechanical and rheological properties under both steady-state and dynamic loading conditions were tested with a parallel plate rheometer. The effects of silicone oil composition, strain amplitude and angular frequency were summarized. When raising the angular frequency in the dynamic shear test, the storage modulus of conventional silicone rubber shows a small increasing trend with the frequency. This study is aimed at identifying the potential benefits of using a patientspecific aperture in proton beam scanning. For this purpose, an accurate Monte Carlo model of the pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PT) treatment head at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) was developed based on an existing model of the passive double-scattering (DS) system. The Monte Carlo code specifies the treatment head at MGH with sub-millimeter accuracy. The code was configured based on the results of experimental measurements performed at MGH. The performance of conducting polymers as actuators is determined by a complicated series of molecular processes that occur as a result of oxidation and reduction of the polymer. In particular, the amount of actuation strain generated for a given voltage stimulus is determined by the number and type of ions (and solvent) that enter and leave the polymer and changes in the mechanical properties (particularly elastic modulus) of the polymer. This study is an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) installed in remoulded soft clay, where a large-scale cyclic triaxial process simulation rig was employed to simulate cyclic loading representing a track environment. The experimental data show that PVD successfully prevents excessive accumulation of pore water pressure during cyclic loading, and their dissipation continues to occur after the load is removed. The findings of this study have direct significance to rail track environments, e.g. in coastal Australia, where PVD installation beneath rail tracks constructed on low-lying estuarine soils has been recently adopted.

Comparative Study Of Oxide Inclusion Dissolution In Cao-Sio2-Al2o3 Slag, Brian J. Monaghan, Liang Chen, J. Sorbe

The dissolution of alumina, spinel and zirconia inclusions in a liquid CaO–SiO2–Al2O3 slag has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy. Over the experimental temperature range 1477–1577uC it is found that alumina inclusions have a slower dissolution rate than that of spinel, and that zirconia inclusions form gas bubbles at the inclusion surface during dissolution. The results have been analysed assuming mass transfer control in the slag phase, and the slower rate of dissolution of the alumina inclusions is explained by the observation that they have a greater mass of aluminium oxide, the rate controlling species, than that of spinel.

Much of the recent experimental work carried out at by the PYROmetallurgical group at the University of Wollongong has focussed on understanding coke behaviour in the lower zone of the blast furnace. We report a comprehensive theoretical study on reaction of methane by Fe4 cluster. This Letter gains insight into the mechanism of the reaction and indicate the Fe4 cluster has strong catalytic effect on the activation reaction of methane. In detail, the results show the cleavage of the first C-H bond is both an energetically and kinetically favourable process and the breaking of the second C-H is the rate-determining step. Moreover, our Letter demonstrates that the different cluster size of iron can not only determine the catalytic activity of methane but also control the product selectivity.

The aim of this study is to develop a seawater hydraulic piston pump for the power pack of an underwater tool system. A pump with check valves and oil–water-separated structure was selected for the purpose of improving its tolerance to particles when applied in open-circuit system. A novel ‘anti-loosening’ structure was introduced for the piston/shoe assembly. To improve the anti-wear and anti-corrosion performances of the piston and sleeve pairs under seawater lubrication, carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone was injected as an inner of the sleeve, and synthesized WC was formed on the piston with improved surface hardness. The practical number of charge carriers loaded is crucial to the evaluation of the capacity performance of carbon-based electrodes in service, and cannot be easily addressed experimentally. In this paper, we report a density functional theory study of charge carrier adsorption onto zigzag edge-shaped graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs), both pristine and incorporating edge substitution with boron, nitrogen or oxygen atoms. All edge substitutions are found to be energetically favorable, especially in oxidized environments. The original and high-pressure torsion (HPT) processed Zircaloy-4 materials were hydrided using gaseous hydrogen charging at different hydrogen pressures (10, 15 and 20 atm). The phase and microstructural evolutions of the samples during hydriding were characterized. It showed that when hydriding at the identical conditions, more hydrides tended to form in the HPT samples compared to that of the original ones. At a hydrogen pressure of 20 atm, the HPT sample was completely converted to ε-ZrH2 while some δ-ZrH1.66 hydrides (volume fraction ~5.73%) were present in the material without HPT preprocessing. This paper presents a laboratory study of interface behavior between ballast and geogrid under various degree of fouling by coal fines. The stress-displacement behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast with geogrid was investigated through a series of large-scale direct shear tests where the fouling degree varied from 0% to 95% Void Contamination Index (VCI), at normal stresses ranging from 15kPa to 75kPa. The results showed that geogrid enhances the shear strength and increases apparent angle of shearing resistance, while only slightly reduces the vertical displacement of the composite geogrid-ballast system. Silicon microdosimeters for the characterisation of mixed radiation fields relevant to the space radiation environment have been under continual development at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics for over a decade. These devices are useful for the prediction of single event upsets in microelectronics and for radiation protection of spacecraft crew. The latest development in silicon microdosimetry is a family of large-area n-SOI microdosimeters for real-time dosimetry in space radiation environments. Chain-die Forming, a novel sheet metal forming method, has been proposed and developed recently to overcome the problems that arose in roll forming. As an extension to roll forming, Chain-die Forming has been proposed to elongate the deformation length by increasing the virtual roll radii, and employing discrete profiled die-blocks which move on a track board with the desired large radii to im-plement or simulate the rotation of the virtual large rolls. The roll radii are so large and the forming length is so long that all redundant strain components occurring in roll forming are significantly reduced or even eliminated.

Purpose: Information and communications technology solutions have been introduced into the residential aged care system in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of aged care, however to date, the actual benefits have not been systematically analysed.
