Isolating Corrosion Of Steel Plates Coupled With Titanium, Anil Patnaik, X. Shan, M. Adams, T. Srivatsan, Craig Menzemer, Joe Payer Oct 2015

Isolating Corrosion Of Steel Plates Coupled With Titanium, Anil Patnaik, X. Shan, M. Adams, T. Srivatsan, Craig Menzemer, Joe Payer

Craig Menzemer

Over twenty six percent of the bridges in the United States are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Corrosion of steel used in structures like bridges and buildings is a problem that has gained increased interest and focused concern. Steel is often the metal that is preferred for use in such applications due to a synergism of ease of availability, acceptable mechanical properties and cost effectiveness. Through the years, titanium has grown in strength, stature and significance to be recognized as an emerging high performance metal that is both stronger and lighter than steel. A distinctive property of titanium and its …

Extrinsic Influence Of Environment On The Corrosion Behaviour Of Enamel-Coated Steel Dowel Bars, Srikanth Bajaj, Anil Patnaik, Joe Payer, Robert Liang, Kannan Manigandan, Tirumalai Srivatsan Aug 2015

Extrinsic Influence Of Environment On The Corrosion Behaviour Of Enamel-Coated Steel Dowel Bars, Srikanth Bajaj, Anil Patnaik, Joe Payer, Robert Liang, Kannan Manigandan, Tirumalai Srivatsan

Anil Patnaik

A new type of enamel coated dowel bars for use as concrete pavements has been recently developed and implemented. A gradual deterioration of such bars can occur due to corrosion occurring at locations of the fine microscopic cracks and other defects in the coating. The results of a study aimed at evaluating and understanding the corrosion resistance of such dowel bars is presented and comparisons made with corresponding epoxy-coated dowel bars. Identical defects were introduced onto the surface of the dowel bars with the two types of coatings. The extrinsic influence of environment and resultant corrosion based on type, location …

Fatigue Performance Improvement By Dynamic Strain Aging And Dynamic Precipitation In Warm Laser Shock Peening Of Aisi 4140 Steel, Chang Ye, Gary Cheng Apr 2015

Fatigue Performance Improvement By Dynamic Strain Aging And Dynamic Precipitation In Warm Laser Shock Peening Of Aisi 4140 Steel, Chang Ye, Gary Cheng

Dr. Chang Ye

Warm laser shock peening (WLSP) integrates the advantages of laser shock peening and thermal-mechanical treatment (TMT) to improve material fatigue performance. Compared to traditional laser shock peening (LSP), warm laser shock peening, i.e. LSP at elevated temperature, leads to better performance in many aspects. WLSP can induce nanoscale precipitations by dynamic precipitation and high density dislocation by dynamic strain aging (DSA), resulting in higher surface strength, which is beneficial for fatigue life improvement. Due to pinning of dislocation structure by nanoscale precipitates, and the pinning of dislocation structure by Cottrell atmosphere, or the DSA effect, stability of the dislocation arrangement …

Flexural Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tubes Under High-Strain Rate Impact Loading, Yaohua Deng, Christopher Tuan Mar 2014

Flexural Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tubes Under High-Strain Rate Impact Loading, Yaohua Deng, Christopher Tuan

Christopher Y. Tuan

Nine simply supported circular steel concrete-filled tubes (CFTs), two circular steel posttensioned concrete-filled tubes (PTCFTs), and one circular steel fiber–reinforced concrete-filled tube (FRCFT) have been tested in an instrumented drop-weight impact facility. The weight and the height of the drop-weight were varied to cause failure in some test specimens. The failure modes and local damages in those specimens have been investigated extensively. Failure in the steel tubes was commonly tensile facture or rupture along the circumference. Concrete core in the impact area commonly crushed under compression and cracked under tension. The use of prestressing strands and steel fibers significantly restrained …

Flexural Strength Analysis Of Non-Post-Tensioned And Post-Tensioned Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tubes, Yaohua Deng, Christopher Tuan, Q. Zhou, Y. Xiao Mar 2014

Flexural Strength Analysis Of Non-Post-Tensioned And Post-Tensioned Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tubes, Yaohua Deng, Christopher Tuan, Q. Zhou, Y. Xiao

Christopher Y. Tuan

Concrete-filled circular steel tubes (CFT) have recently gained significant attention for their enhanced strength and ductility over the conventional steel and reinforced concrete construction. The concrete compressive strength is significantly increased by the lateral confinement provided by the steel tube and local buckling of the steel tube is restrained by the concrete infill. This paper investigates the further enhancement of these composite actions due to post-tensioning the concrete cores inside circular steel tubes. The flexural behavior of a post-tensioned CFT as well as a non-post-tensioned CFT was studied experimentally and analytically. A numerical algorithm for predicting the moment capacities of …

Electrochemical Deposition Of Porous Vox And Mno2 Nanowires On Stainless Steel Mesh For Flexible Supercapacitors, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Hua Liu, S Dou Nov 2012

Electrochemical Deposition Of Porous Vox And Mno2 Nanowires On Stainless Steel Mesh For Flexible Supercapacitors, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Hua Liu, S Dou

Shulei Chou

Porous vanadium oxide (VOx) and MnO2 nanowires were synthesized by an electrochemical deposition method using stainless steel mesh as substrate. The as-prepared porous VOx and MnO2 nanowire films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results show that the MnO2 nanowire film shows specific capacitance of 195, 170, 158, and 91 F g-1 at scan rates of 5, 10, 20, and 50 mV s-1, respectively. The porous VOx film displays specific capacitance of 152, 124, 99, and 76 F g …
