A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Algorithm With Separated Temporal And Spatial Interfaces And Related Stability Analysis, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak Jul 2007

A Three-Dimensional Fdtd Subgridding Algorithm With Separated Temporal And Spatial Interfaces And Related Stability Analysis, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A finite-different time-domain subgrid algorithm locally refines the mesh at regions requiring higher resolution. A novel separation of spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is presented that allows implementing a novel spatial subgridding method and investigating the stability of each subalgorithm individually. Details are given for a spatial subgridding algorithm having a 1:3 mesh ratio. In the spatial subgridding algorithm, the fine-mesh is constructed with a recessed interface and the interpolation scheme is designed to be symmetric to maintain the stability of the update process. The stability of the spatial subgridding algorithm is analyzed with a matrix method. Numerical examples showing …

Homogeneous To Bubbling Regime Transition In Gas- And Liquid-Fluidized Beds Through Dem-Cfd Simulations, Alberto Di Renzo, Francesco P. Di Maio May 2007

Homogeneous To Bubbling Regime Transition In Gas- And Liquid-Fluidized Beds Through Dem-Cfd Simulations, Alberto Di Renzo, Francesco P. Di Maio

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering

DEM-CFD simulations are carried out for the water fluidization of 200 micron glass ballotini and air fluidization of cohesionless alumina 70 micron powders. In the first case, homogeneous expansion is found throughout the whole investigated range of water velocity. Alumina powders exhibits a transition to bubbling regime at a voidage value in very good agreement with results of the theory of particle bed stability. The simulated kinematic and dynamic wave propagation velocities are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

On Damping And Fluidelastic Instability In A Tube Bundle Subjected To Two-Phase Cross-Flow, Joaquin Moran, David S. Weaver Jan 2007

On Damping And Fluidelastic Instability In A Tube Bundle Subjected To Two-Phase Cross-Flow, Joaquin Moran, David S. Weaver

Publications and Scholarship

An experimental study was conducted to investigate damping and uidelastic instability in tube arrays subjected to twophase cross-ow. The purpose of this research was to improve our understanding of these phenomena and how they are affected by void fraction and ow regime. The working uid used was Freon 11, which better models steam-water than air-water mixtures in terms of vapour-liquid mass ratio as well as permitting phase changes due to pressure uctuations. The damping measurements were obtained by plucking the monitored tube from outside the test section using electromagnets. An exponential function was tted to the tube decay trace, producing …

Stability Of Cementite Formed From Hematite And Titanomagnetite Ore, Raymond J. Longbottom, Oleg Ostrovski, Jianqiang Zhang, David J. Young Jan 2007

Stability Of Cementite Formed From Hematite And Titanomagnetite Ore, Raymond J. Longbottom, Oleg Ostrovski, Jianqiang Zhang, David J. Young

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The stability of cementite formed during the reduction of hematite and preoxidized titanomagnetite ores in a methane-hydrogen gas mixture was examined in the temperature interval 500oC to 900oC for the hematite ore and 300oC to 1100oC for titanomagnetite. Cementite formed from hematite ore was most stable at temperatures between 750oC to 770oC. Its decomposition rate increased with decreasing temperature between 750oC and 600oC and with increasing temperature above 770oC. Cementite formed from preoxidized titanomagnetite was most stable in the temperature range 700 …

Phase Stability And Consolidation Of Glassy/Nanostructured Al85ni9nd4co2 Alloys, Laichang Zhang, M Calin, M Branzei, L Schultz, J Eckert Jan 2007

Phase Stability And Consolidation Of Glassy/Nanostructured Al85ni9nd4co2 Alloys, Laichang Zhang, M Calin, M Branzei, L Schultz, J Eckert

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Al85Ni9Nd4Co2 metallic glass/nanostructured ribbons and powders were used as starting materials for producing bulk amorphous/nanostructured Al-based alloys. Glassy ribbons were obtained by melt spinning at wheel surface velocities ranging from 5 to 37 m/s. The amorphous ribbons exhibited a supercooled liquid region of ∼20 K, a reduced glass transition temperature of ∼0.47 and γ ∼ 0.328. Mechanical alloying of the elemental powder mixture did not lead to amorphization. However, amorphous powders obtained by milling the glassy ribbons for 9 h exhibited a thermal stability similar to the initial ribbons. Isothermal differential scanning calorimetry …
