Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

The determination of field capacity (FC), irrigation thresholds, and irrigation amounts is characterized by site-specific soil hydraulic properties (SHPs). This study, conducted in two zones (zone 1 and zone 2) delineated based on soil, topography, and historical crop yield in Alabama (USA), focused on determining zone-specific FC using negligible drainage flux (qfc) criterion. The HYDRUS-1D model was used to optimize zone-specific SHPs using measured soil matric potential (h). The zone-specific FCs were determined using optimized and raw SHPs at 0.01 cm/day as qfc. The results showed that the optimized FC at qfc …

Exploration Of Lignin-Based Superabsorbent Polymers (Hydrogels) For Soil Water Management And As A Carrier For Delivering Rhizobium Spp., Toby Adjuik Jan 2022

Exploration Of Lignin-Based Superabsorbent Polymers (Hydrogels) For Soil Water Management And As A Carrier For Delivering Rhizobium Spp., Toby Adjuik

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Superabsorbent polymers (hydrogels) as soil amendments may improve soil hydraulic properties and act as carrier materials beneficial to soil microorganisms. Researchers have mostly explored synthetic hydrogels which may not be environmentally sustainable. This dissertation focused on the development and application of lignin-based hydrogels as sustainable soil amendments. This dissertation also explores the development of pedotransfer transfer functions (PTFs) for predicting saturated hydraulic conductivity using statistical and machine learning methods with a publicly available large data set. A lignin-based hydrogel was synthesized, and its impact on soil water retention was determined in silt loam and loamy fine sand soils. Hydrogel treatment …

Evolution Law Of Pore-Size Distribution In Soil-Water Retention Test, Geng Niu, Long-Tan Shao, De-An Sun, Chang-Fu Wei, Xiao-Xia Guo, Hua Xu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

This paper is to measure the soil-water retention curves (SWRC) of undisturbed and compacted soil specimens and compare the differences in measured data between these two soils. The mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests are conducted to explore the difference in the pore size distributions (PSD) between the undisturbed and compacted specimens and investigate the evolution law of PSD during drying. By considering shrinkage during drying, the basic parameters of SWRC can be determined based on the PSD. The results show that the undisturbed specimens in the wide suction range exhibit a unimodal PSD. The saturated compacted-specimen exhibits a unimodal PSD, …

"The study aimed to fundamentally understand how soil strength and hydraulic properties are impacted by recurring cycles of wetting and drying induced by climate variability, with the practical implication of forecasting the stability of highway embankment slopes. The review of literature on the effects of long-term cyclic wetting-drying phases on hydro-mechanical properties of clayey soils suggests that only a few cycles of wetting and drying can impact the strength and hydraulic conductivity, where the latter can increase several orders of magnitude. Laboratory …

Effect Of Stoniness On The Hydraulic Properties Of A Soil From An Evaporation Experiment Using The Wind And Inverse Estimation Methods, Nerea Arias, Iñigo Virto, Alberto Enrique, Paloma Bescansa, Riley Walton, Ole O. Wendroth Feb 2019

Wendroth

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Stony soils are distributed all over the world. The study of their characteristics has gained importance lately due to their increasing use as agricultural soils. The effect that rock fragments exert on the soil hydraulic properties is difficult to measure in situ, and is usually derived from the fine earth properties. However, the corrections used so far do not seem accurate for all types of stony soils. Our objective was to assess the adequacy of estimating the hydraulic properties of a stony soil from the fine earth ones by correcting the latter by the volume occupied by rock fragments. To …

Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala Dec 2018

Prediction And Rehabilitation Of Highway Embankment Slope Failures In Changing Climate, Navid Jafari, Anand Puppala

Data

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17GTLSU04. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"Highway slopes constructed with clayey soil are prone to desiccation cracks due to wetting and drying weather cycle, which allows greater moisture infiltration into the embankment from precipitation. Fissures formed due to extended wetting and drying cycles allow water to seep deeper into the soil than surficial wetting and increase the water content. This increases the moisture content in the soil and results in reduction in shear strength to the fully softened strength. On the other hand, development of desiccation cracks and …

Characterization Of The Green Roof Growth Media, Ginevra Alessandra Perelli Aug 2014

Characterization Of The Green Roof Growth Media, Ginevra Alessandra Perelli

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Green roofs are becoming a popular solution to manage the stormwater, to reduce the energy consumption in highly urbanized environment and provide many additional benefits. One of the key components that characterize the green roof system is the growth medium; the medium supports the plants, providing water and nutrient storage, and contributes to the roof insulation.

The object of this thesis is to investigate the hydraulic and the thermal properties of the green roof growth medium and to study the relationship among these properties through extensive laboratory analyses. In addition, the laboratory results are compared with direct measurements in the …
