Utilizing Software Defined Radios For Increased Bandwidth In Satellite Communications, Brian M. Wright Mar 2021

Utilizing Software Defined Radios For Increased Bandwidth In Satellite Communications, Brian M. Wright

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the background and future possibilities of using cooperative satellites equipped with Software Defined Radios (SDRs) to combine their bandwidth and increase their signal reliability. Software Defined Radios are a potential solution to realize various software applications that support a reconfigurable and adaptive communication system without altering any hardware devices or features. This benefit, along with others that are offered by SDRs and the ongoing improvements in commercial digital electronics have sparked an interest in developing small satellites for advanced communications. This research effort sets out to prove if a high bandwidth signal can be generated by using …

High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao Mar 2017

High-Sensitivity Phased Arrays For Radio Astronomy And Satellite Communications, Junming Diao

Theses and Dissertations

Radio astronomy is used to study stars, galaxies, black holes and gas clouds radiation at radio frequencies. Detecting extremely weak signals from deep space radio sources requires high sensitive feed system associated with large dish antennas. The key figure of merit is survey speed, or the time required to map a region of the sky to a given source flux density. Survey speed is proportional to the frequency bandwidth, the field of view or observable region of the sky, and the squared sensitivity, where sensitivity is related to reflector aperture efficiency and system noise temperature. Compared to the traditional single …

Design And Analysis Of Receiver Systems In Satellite Communications And Uav Navigation Radar, Matthew Robertson Morin Jul 2014

Design And Analysis Of Receiver Systems In Satellite Communications And Uav Navigation Radar, Matthew Robertson Morin

Theses and Dissertations

The design of a low cost electronically steered array feed (ESAF) is implemented and tested. The ESAF demonstrated satellite tracking capabilities over four degrees. The system was compared to a commercial low-noise block downconverter (LNBF) and was able to receive the signal over a wider angle than the commercial system. Its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance was poor, but a proof of concept for a low cost ESAF used for tracking is demonstrated. Two compact low profile dual circularly polarized (CP) reflector feed antenna designs are also analyzed. One of the designs is a passive antenna dipole array over an electromagnetic …

Passive And Electronically Steered Array Planar Feeds For Satellite Communications, Kyle C. Browning Mar 2014

Passive And Electronically Steered Array Planar Feeds For Satellite Communications, Kyle C. Browning

Theses and Dissertations

As the need for more bandwidth increases, satellite communication (SatCom) terminals are forced to climb higher in frequency. Higher frequency means greater propagation losses, and so antenna gain and sensitivity have to increase. The higher the gain, the more difficult it is to point the antenna. To make matters even more challenging, consumers are requesting satellite links in harsher environments and on moving vehicle and planes. In order to meet today's challenges and improve on dish feeds, research is ongoing to replace fixed-beam feedhorns with smaller, cheaper, and lighter PCB based antennas and to develop low-cost electronically steered array feeds …

A Performance Analysis Of A Low Earth Orbit Satellite System, Korkut A. Ercakar Jun 1999

A Performance Analysis Of A Low Earth Orbit Satellite System, Korkut A. Ercakar

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a performance analysis of the TELEDESIC® Low Earth Orbit Satellite System. It analyzes the system's performance to meet the real-time communications constraints with a full satellite constellation. Computer simulation results are the sources to evaluate delays associated with packets transmitted from source to destination earth stations. The simulation is run at low, medium and high loading levels with two different, uniform and non-uniform, traffic distributions. The evaluated results are end-to-end packet delays and packet rejection rate. The results show that the TELEDESIC® satellite system network is capable of meeting the real-time communication requirements with delay values much …

A Performance Analysis Of Dynamic Routing Algorithms In An Iridium-Like Low Earth Orbit Satellite System, Stephen R. Pratt Mar 1999

A Performance Analysis Of Dynamic Routing Algorithms In An Iridium-Like Low Earth Orbit Satellite System, Stephen R. Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a first of its kind comparative analysis of the Extended Bellman-Ford and Darting algorithms, using the Iridium low earth orbit (LEO) satellite system configuration for the simulation environment. The algorithms are compared to one another via discrete-event computer simulation and evaluated based on their ability to route real-time voice communications under low, medium, and high network loading conditions. The algorithms' ability to meet real-time voice constraints is evaluated with a full and degraded satellite constellation using an algorithmic satellite removal method. The investigation results indicate that both algorithms are suitable for use in a LEO environment and …

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman Mar 1999

Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis designs, develops, and uses software Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to analyze the communications capabilities of Radio Frequency (RF) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). The GUIs are geared towards analyzing the proposed ISLs of the Discoverer II program, but are general enough to permit analysis of any free-space RF ISLs. Discoverer II is a demonstration program of low-earth orbiting satellites and is primarily focused on satellite-based sensor technology. This thesis shows RF ISLs can meet the program requirement to broadcast the sensor data back to CONUS in near-real-time. The GUIs operate in real-time and explore trade-offs in the communications capability by …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Iridium® And Globalstar® Satellite Transmission Paths, Kenneth E. Crowe Mar 1999

A Comparative Analysis Of The Iridium® And Globalstar® Satellite Transmission Paths, Kenneth E. Crowe

Theses and Dissertations

Globalstar and Iridium will provide valuable global communications assets for business, humanitarian aid and military operations. However, the level of coverage and the quality of the transmission path of these systems are strongly dependent on the latitude of the user and, due to their orbital characteristics, both systems provide reduced levels of coverage at low latitudes. Additionally, the L- and S-Band frequencies utilized by these systems are prone to ionospheric interference at low latitudes. The results of extensive simulation analysis indicate that the Globalstar constellation architecture provides a considerably better transmission path than Iridium's in several important areas, including path …

User Location Determination Strategy In A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network, Jaehee Lee Dec 1997

User Location Determination Strategy In A Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network, Jaehee Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, many Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems have been proposed for the purpose of global communication and one of those systems is planned to start the commercial service in 1998. These LEO satellite systems are providing most of current communication services (voice, fax, data, paging, and even real time video service) without any limitation on place and time. However, little is published about their detail system methodology on user tracking and managing schemes. This thesis presents two user location tracking algorithms in a LEO environment. One (Gateway Approach) is the most likely approach under present system proposals, while the …
