Bbq Grill Temperature Uniformity Study, Monty Dodge Jr, Samuel Melo May 2016

Bbq Grill Temperature Uniformity Study, Monty Dodge Jr, Samuel Melo

Mechanical Engineering

Bull Outdoor Products, Incorporated, a barbeque grill and outdoor kitchen manufacturer, sponsored this project with the intent of improving the temperature uniformity across the surface of their barbecue grills. For this project, the Cal Poly team of mechanical engineering students, Monty Dodge Jr. and Samuel Melo, used the Brahma grill head model with setups for both natural gas and propane. In order to determine exactly what the uniformity across the grill surface was, the student team designed a testing apparatus which would measure a grid of temperature locations one inch apart spanning an area 16 by 36 inches. Developing a …

A Model Compound Study In Syngas Tar Reforming, Jaren Lee Jan 2016

A Model Compound Study In Syngas Tar Reforming, Jaren Lee

LSU Master's Theses

Biomass or coal gasification are promising processes for renewable energy. However, a major operating problem in gasification is what to do with syngas byproducts such as H2S and tars (heavy hydrocarbons) that cause catalyst deactivation downstream. Studies have shown that rare earth oxides (REOs) doped with transition metals are promising catalysts for tar reforming in the presence of sulfur.(R. Li, Roy, Bridges, & Dooley, 2014) In Chapter 1, propane is studied as a model compound for tar reforming with transition metal-doped (e.g., Mn, Fe) REOs. These are compared to a typical commercial Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. The results showed that REO/TM catalysts …

Design, Constuction, And Evaluation Of A Flame Cultivator Attachment, Aaron Evans Jun 2013

Design, Constuction, And Evaluation Of A Flame Cultivator Attachment, Aaron Evans

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This senior project discusses the design, construction, and testing of a flame cultivator attachment. The project used existing torches, a tractor, and a cultivation sled to increase the usability of the farmer’s torches. This project includes two torch clamps, two propane tank brackets, and a removable valve panel. Testing showed that the new system increases the safety and efficiency of the torches.

The Development And Characterisation Of Polyaniline-Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites Fibres Using 2-Acrylamido-2 Methyl-1-Propane Sulfonic Acid (Ampsa) Through One Step Wet Spinning Process, Vahid Mottaghitalab, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace Mar 2013

The Development And Characterisation Of Polyaniline-Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites Fibres Using 2-Acrylamido-2 Methyl-1-Propane Sulfonic Acid (Ampsa) Through One Step Wet Spinning Process, Vahid Mottaghitalab, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace

Gordon Wallace

High strength, flexible and conductive polyaniline (PANi)–carbon nanotube (SWNT) composite fibres have been produced using wet spinning. The use of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) containing 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPSA) has been shown to act as an excellent dispersing medium for carbon nanotubes and for dissolution of polyaniline. The viscosity of DCAA–AMPSA solution undergoes a transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian viscoelastic behaviour upon addition of carbon nanotubes. The ultimate tensile strength and elastic modulus of PANi–AMPSA fibres were increased by 50 and 120%, respectively, upon addition of 0.76% (w/w) carbon nanotubes. The elongation at break decreased from 11 to 4% upon addition …

Ionization Cross Section Data Of Nitrogen, Methane, And Propane For Light Ions And Electrons And Their Suitability For Use In Track Structure Simulations, Marion Bug, Elisabetta Gargioni, Heidi Nettelbeck, Woon Yong Baek, Gerhard Hilgers, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Hans Rabus Jan 2013

Rosenfeld, Hans Rabus

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Track structure Monte Carlo simulations are frequently applied in micro- and nanodosimetry to calculate the radiation transport in detail. The use of a well-validated set of cross section data in such simulation codes ensures accurate calculations of transport parameters, such as ionization yields. These cross section data are, however, scarce and often discrepant when measured by different groups. This work surveys literature data on ionization and charge-transfer cross sections of nitrogen, methane, and propane for electrons, protons, and helium particles, focusing on the energy range between 100 keV and 20 MeV. Based on the evaluated data, different models for the …

Air Quality Impacts from Oil and Gas Development (January 27)

Presenter: Debra Kaden, Ph.D., Toxicologist, ENVIRON International Corporation, discusses air concentrations of chemicals of potential health concern surrounding oil and gas development activities, as well as temporal and spatial patterns of these chemicals in the ambient environment. Such information is necessary to evaluate possible health impacts of the drilling process on air in surrounding communities.

Fluidized Bed Combustion Of C1-C4 N-Alkanes, Jean-Philippe Laviolette, Gregory S. Patience, Jamal Chaouki May 2010

Fluidized Bed Combustion Of C1-C4 N-Alkanes, Jean-Philippe Laviolette, Gregory S. Patience, Jamal Chaouki

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

The non-premixed combustion of C1 to C4 n-alkanes was investigated inside a bubbling fluidized bed of inert sand particles at intermediate temperatures: 923 K (650oC) ≤ TB ≤ 1123 K (850oC). Lower (T1) and upper (T2) critical transition bed temperatures were measured for ethane, propane and n-butane as 923 K (650oC) and 1073 K (800oC), respectively. The values for methane were significantly higher with T1 = 1023 K (750oC) and T2 > 1123 K (850oC). Alkane conversion was accurately modeled with first-order kinetics and C2 to C4 n-alkanes combustion rates were characterized by a uniform Arrhenius expression: (. The reaction rate …
