Performance Monitoring Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier (Prb) For The Remediation Of Acidic Groundwater In Acidic Sulfate Soil (Ass) Terrain, Laura Banasiak, Buddhima Indraratna Aug 2014

Performance Monitoring Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier (Prb) For The Remediation Of Acidic Groundwater In Acidic Sulfate Soil (Ass) Terrain, Laura Banasiak, Buddhima Indraratna

Laura J Banasiak Dr

The treatment of acidic drainage contaminated with potentially toxic metals such as dissolved aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) resulting from pyrite oxidation in acid sulfate soil (ASS) is a challenging problem requiring novel engineering solutions. Traditional remediation techniques of lime neutralization, groundwater manipulation (e.g. fixed-level weirs), tidal buffering (e.g. modified floodgates) are unsuitable due to their inherent inability to prevent pyrite oxidation and treat acid previously generated, as well as the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall events. As an alternative, the first permeable reactive barrier (PRB) with recycled concrete aggregates as the reactive material was installed in 2006 in …

Optimization Of Frt Active Power Performance Of A Dfig During Transient Grid Faults, L Meegahapola, Damian Flynn, Tim Littler Dec 2013

Optimization Of Frt Active Power Performance Of A Dfig During Transient Grid Faults, L Meegahapola, Damian Flynn, Tim Littler

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

Optimal fault ride-through (FRT) conditions for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) during a transient grid fault are analyzed with special emphasis on improving the active power generation profile. The transition states due to crowbar activation during transient faults are investigated to exploit the maximum power during the fault and post-fault period. It has been identified that operating slip, severity of fault and crowbar resistance have a direct impact on the power capability of a DFIG, and crowbar resistance can be chosen to optimize the power capability. It has been further shown that an extended crowbar period can deliver enhanced inertial …

Performance Comparison Of Two Compact Multiplexed Readouts With Sensl's Spmarray4 For High-Resolution Detector Module, Yujin Qi, Xiaohui Zhang, Cuilan Zhao, Lihong Chen, Marco Petasecca, Mitra Safavi-Naeini, Michael Lerch, Anatoly Rosenfeld

Michael L.F. Lerch

The purpose of this study was to investigate a compact readout for silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array in the development of high-resolution imaging detector to reduce the readout channels while maximizing the detectors performance. The detector module was composed of a LYSO scintillation crystal array and a SensL's SPMArray4. The crystal array was coupled to the SiPM array with a 2mm-thick silicone pad to improve the light sharing among the SiPM array elements. Three LYSO crystal arrays of 4x4, 8x8 and 12x12 crystal elements with pixel sizes of 3.2, 1.6 and 1.0 mm were investigated in this study. Two compact multiplexed …

Sugar As An Optimal Carbon Source For The Enhanced Performance Of Mgb2 Superconductors At High Magnetic Fields, Olga Shcherbakova, Alexey Pan, Jianli Wang, Andrey Shcherbakov, S. Dou, David Wexler, E Babic, M Jercinovic, O Husnjak Jul 2013

Sugar As An Optimal Carbon Source For The Enhanced Performance Of Mgb2 Superconductors At High Magnetic Fields, Olga Shcherbakova, Alexey Pan, Jianli Wang, Andrey Shcherbakov, S. Dou, David Wexler, E Babic, M Jercinovic, O Husnjak

Jianli Wang

In this paper we report the results of an extended study of the effect of sugar doping on the structural and electromagnetic properties of MgB2 superconductors. High values of the upper critical field (Bc2) of 36 T and the irreversibility field (Birr) of 27 T have been estimated at the temperature of 5 K in a bulk MgB2 sample with the addition of 10 wt% of sugar. The critical current density (Jc(Ba)) of sugar-doped samples has been significantly improved in the high field region. The value of transport Jc has reached as high as 108 A m-2 at 10 T …

Roadside Rest Area Wastewater Treatment System: Performance Evaluation And Improvement, Adam Kiss, Faisal Hai, Long Nghiem Dec 2012

Roadside Rest Area Wastewater Treatment System: Performance Evaluation And Improvement, Adam Kiss, Faisal Hai, Long Nghiem

Long D Nghiem

The performance of a decentralised sewage treatment plant located at a rest area servicing a major freeway was investigated. Long term monitoring and rigorous analyses undertaken in this study revealed several unique and challenging issues associated with such scarcely studied systems. Data collected over a six month period showed that the raw wastewater strength was well above typical household wastewater characteristics, with the average BOD5, COD, TOC, TN and TP values of 880, 4900, 350, 238 and 8 mg/L, respectively. The system performance was considerably lower than that expected of a typical wastewater treatment unit. Several shortcomings in …
