Hydrothermal Liquefaction Of Microalgae For The Production Of Bio-Crude Oil, Yulin Hu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and climate change, extensive research has performed towards renewable energy production from microalgal biomass. Microalgae have several inherent benefits, such as high photosynthetic efficiencies, fast growth rates, and high lipid contents. In addition, microalgae can be cultivated in the non-arable lands (e.g., saline and waste water), thereby no competition with food crops production.

Transesterification is the one of commonly used technologies for converting microalgae into liquid bio-fuels (i.e., biodiesel). Normally, an energy-intensive drying step is required in the transesterification treatment, which accounts for nearly half of the energy input. Hence, if “wet” microalgal …

Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment Of Hydrothermal Processing Of Microalgae For Biofuels And Co-Product Generation, Andrew P. Bessette

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Traditional processing methods of algae to biofuels require dewatering after harvesting of the algae before the lipids can be extracted. This is typically the most energy intensive and therefore the most expensive step. Old Dominion University (ODU) has successfully utilized a flash hydrolysis (a kind of hydrothermal) process where proteins are solubilized into the liquid phase of product and the remainder lipid-rich, low nitrogen product is separated into a solid phase. The solid phase (lipid-rich) is then an ideal candidate for biofuel feedstock and the liquid phase, or hydrolysate, can be used for coproducts such as a source of nutrients …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to population expiation and the increased awareness of the impact on the environment by wastewater treatment, improved wastewater treatment systems are needed to treat municipal and agricultural wastewater. Treating wastewater with oxygen decreases carbon compounds at the expense of energy to move carbon and oxygen to be in contact with each other. Anaerobic digestion of wastewater can reduce the cost by utilizing microbes to treat high amounts of carbon in wastewater without the need for extensive oxygen requirement. With a proper balance of nutrients, microbes also produce methane, a renewable energy source.

It has been suggested that microalgae be …
