Analyzing The Effects Of Ultrafast Laser Processing On Mechanical Properties Of 3d-Printed Pla Parts, Darshan Pramodbhai Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies have already led to wide-scale adoption of 3D-printed parts in various industries. The expansion in choice of materials that can be processed, particularly using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and the steady advancements in dimensional accuracy control have extended the range of applications far beyond rapid prototyping. However, additive manufacturing still has considerable limitations compared to traditional and subtractive manufacturing processes. This work addresses limitations associated with the as-deposited surface roughness of 3D-printed parts. The effects of roughness-induced stress concentrations were studied on ultimate tensile strength and fatigue life. The samples were manufactured using a …

Searching Extreme Mechanical Properties Using Active Machine Learning And Density Functional Theory, Joshua Ojih Oct 2021

Searching Extreme Mechanical Properties Using Active Machine Learning And Density Functional Theory, Joshua Ojih

Theses and Dissertations

Materials with extreme mechanical properties leads to future technological advancements. However, discovery of these materials is non-trivial. The use of machine learning (ML) techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculation for structure properties prediction has helped to the discovery of novel materials over the past decade. ML techniques are highly efficient, but less accurate and density functional theory (DFT) calculation is highly accurate, but less efficient. We proposed a technique to combine ML methods and DFT calculations in discovering new materials with desired properties. This combination improves the search for materials because it combines the efficiency of ML and the …

A Computational Study Of Cocrfeniti High Entropy Alloys: Phase Diagrams, Thermodynamics, And Mechanical Properties From Calphad And First Principles, Geraldine Anis

Theses and Dissertations

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are multi-component alloys, which are often defined as those consisting of at least 5 principal elements with concentrations ranging between 5 and 35 atomic weight percent (at.%). Since their introduction by Yeh et al. and Cantor et al. in 2004, HEAs have been found to possess many important properties and have become prime candidates for several high-performance applications such as high-temperature and biomedical applications. Despite their multi-principal element nature, many HEAs favor the formation of solid solution phases as opposed to the intermetallic phases expected for such systems. This was originally only attributed to their high …

Mechanical Properties Of Inconel 718 Processed Using Electron Beam Free Form Fabrication (Ebf3), Brent R. Waters

Theses and Dissertations

Electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) is a rapid metal deposition process that works efficiently with the wieldable alloy Inconel 718 (IN 718). EBF3 is a developing additive manufacturing (AM) process that can manufacture IN 718 parts directly from computer aided design (CAD) data. EBF3 can produce parts significantly faster and more energy efficient than competing IN 718 AM technologies. The EBF3 process utilizes metal wire feedstock which is induced into a molten pool using a focused electron beam in a vacuum environment. This allows parts to be built layer by layer, creating intricate shapes that …

Characterization Of Fibrin Matrix Incorporated Electrospun Polycaprolactone Scaffold, Cho Yi Wong Jan 2016

Characterization Of Fibrin Matrix Incorporated Electrospun Polycaprolactone Scaffold, Cho Yi Wong

Theses and Dissertations

Specific objective: Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) aims to regenerate the lost attachment apparatus caused by periodontal disease through the use of a barrier membrane. For the GTR procedures to be successful, barrier membranes are required to be present at the surgical site for an extended period of time (weeks to months). Synthetic membranes have the advantage of prolonged presence in a wound site; however, they do not actively contribute to wound healing. Biologic membranes are recognized by the host tissue and participate in wound healing but have the disadvantage of early resorption. Therefore, the goal of this study is …

Functionalized Graphitic Nanoreinforcement For Cement Composites, Nima Zohhadi Dec 2014

Functionalized Graphitic Nanoreinforcement For Cement Composites, Nima Zohhadi

Theses and Dissertations

Physical and mechanical properties of graphitic nanomaterials, in particular multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) make them promising candidates for nanoreinforcement of cement composites. The two key challenges associated with the incorporation of MWCNTs and GNPs are to attain uniform dispersion and interfacial bonding within the composite matrix. The effects of three main-stream dispersion techniques (namely, ultrasonication, acid-etching, and surfactant-coating) on the mechanical properties and microstructure of MWCNT- and GNP-cement composites were experimentally studied. Compressive strength tests and different characterization techniques including dynamic light scattering, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission …

Assembly And Mechanical Characterization Of Suspended Boron Nitride Nanotubes, Rachel Waxman

Theses and Dissertations

This study details the dielectrophoretic assembly and mechanical characterization of boron nitride nanotubes on silicon chips with gold electrodes. The chips were fabricated from 4in round silicon wafers with a 100nm-thick low stress silicon nitride insulating layer on the top and bottom. The electrodes were patterned using photo- and electron-beam lithography and dry etching, and the wafers were cut into 4 x 6mm chips. The boron nitride nanotubes studied were obtained from NIA and were synthesized via a unique pressurized vapor/condensor method, which produced long, small-diameter BNNTs without the use of a catalyst. These nanotubes were studied due to their …

Structural Origin Of Mechanical Prowess In Conch Shells, Haoze Li Jan 2013

Structural Origin Of Mechanical Prowess In Conch Shells, Haoze Li

Theses and Dissertations

Conch shells are natural nanocomposites with an exquisite multiscale hierarchical architecture which exhibit coupled ultrahigh mechanical strength and toughness. What materials design strategy renders conch shells such mechanical prowess? In this study, micro/nanoscale structural and mechanical characterization of conch shells (Busycon carica) has been carried out. We demonstrate, for the first time, direct evidence that the previously claimed single-crystal third-order lamellae - the basic building blocks in conch shells are essentially assembled with aragonite nanoparticles of the size ranging from 20 to 45 nm. The third-order lamellae exhibit not only elasticity but also plasticity with the strain up to 0.7% …

Welding Parameters, Distortion And Mechanical Properties Of Aa7075 Lap Joints In Ssfsw, Hejun Yu

Theses and Dissertations

Friction Stir Welding (FSW), first invented by The Welding Institute of UK (TWI) in 1991, is a solid state welding process which was initially applied to welding Aluminum Alloy. FSW has wide application in industrial sectors. Stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) was first developed to weld low thermal conductivity Ti-based alloys, which are hard to weld using conventional friction stir welding. Previous literatures showed SSFSW can produce uniform temperature distribution through thickness during the welding process. Since SSFSW is still under study phase, its advantages and disadvantages are not yet well defined. It is important to study the characteristics …

The present study focuses on developing a relationship between process variables, mechanical properties and post weld microstructure in Friction Stir Welded HSLA 65 steel. Fully consolidated welds can be produced in HSLA 65 steel by PCBN Convex-Scrolled-Shoulder-Step-Spiral (CS4) tool over a wide range of parameters. Microstructures in the nugget center (NC) are dominated by lath bainite and a few polygonal/allotriomorphic grain boundary ferrites. FSW dependent variables are related to FSW independent variables by non-linear relationship. Heat input is identified to be the best parameter index to correlate with microstructures. With increasing heat input, the volume of bainite is reduced, the …

Fatigue Behavior Of A Quasi-Isotropic Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Embedded With A Piezoelectric Sensor, Jon M. Coleman Dec 1997

Fatigue Behavior Of A Quasi-Isotropic Graphite/Epoxy Laminate Embedded With A Piezoelectric Sensor, Jon M. Coleman

Theses and Dissertations

This study primarily investigated the mechanical effects of embedding piezoelectric sensors on the tensile and fatigue strength of a quasi-isotropic, carbon-epoxy laminate. A secondary focus was the investigation of the sensor degradation under tensile loading. A [0 | ±45 | 90]s laminate was fabricated from Hercules AS4/3501-6 pre-preg tape. Specimens were first tested monotonically to obtain an average ultimate tensile strength and to detail the progression of damage. The fatigue tests were tension-tension, R=0.1, 10 Hz, constant amplitude. Results indicated that the embedded piezoelectric sensors did not have a significant effect on the tensile strength of the laminate. Specimens …
