Exploring The Effect Of Environmental Degradation On The Shape Memory Properties Of Polymers, Jorge Mario Avila Dec 2022

Exploring The Effect Of Environmental Degradation On The Shape Memory Properties Of Polymers, Jorge Mario Avila

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A key detriment of the use of polymers by our society is the negative effect this material class has had on the environment. A category of polymers known as shape memory polymers (SMP)s have the ability to return to a programmed original shape form after deformation to a temporary shape by using stimuli such as temperature, electrical pulses and even magnetism. The shape memory effect allows for some polymers to heal if they are damaged. This ability to heal means that components made from these materials can be reused rather than thrown away if they are damaged. The work presented …

Towards Analytical Techniques For Systems Engineering Applications, Griselda Valdepeñas Acosta Jan 2019

Towards Analytical Techniques For Systems Engineering Applications, Griselda Valdepeñas Acosta

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

One of the main objectives of systems engineering is to design, maintain, and analyze systems that help the users. To design an appropriate system for an application domain, we need to know: what are the users' desires and preferences (so that we know in what direction we should aim to change this domain), what is the current state and what is the dynamics of this application domain, and how to use all this information to select the best alternatives for the system design and maintenance. Designing a system includes selecting numerical values for many of the parameters describing the corresponding …

Design And Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Multi-Agent Control System (Framework) Applied To A Social Setting, Perez Antonio Perez Jan 2016

Design And Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Multi-Agent Control System (Framework) Applied To A Social Setting, Perez Antonio Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this research is to design and analyze the performance of a new mechanism to improve the advising of students in a nontraditional environment. This nontraditional environment includes: a minority serving, commuter campus with a high percentage of transfer students. Specifically, these demographics are unable to keep a tightly controlled cohort of students flowing through to the completion of the curriculum. Students in these circumstances usually have varied course loads and competing priorities due to family and financial needs or other societal responsibilities. Therefore, there is a need for an individualized approach to advising.

Designing Optimal Aviation Baggage Screening Strategies Using The Monkey Search Algorithm, Edgar Ivan Jimenez Jan 2012

Designing Optimal Aviation Baggage Screening Strategies Using The Monkey Search Algorithm, Edgar Ivan Jimenez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses the aviation baggage screening design problem considering several baggage screening devices which may be used for system implementation, the devices have different false clear and false alarm rates, throughput and purchase costs. In the present research, a comprehensive cost function which not only includes the cost associated with purchase and operation of baggage security devices, but also includes the indirect costs associated with device errors is used. A new monkey search based evolutionary algorithm is presented to determine the best selection of baggage screening security devices in order to minimize the expected annual total cost. The final …
