Preparation Of Polished Slice Of Special Coal And Its Influence On Coal Petrology Analysis, Liu Shande

Coal Geology & Exploration

Coal petrology analysis is widely used in coal facies research, geological exploration and coal blending test. Qualified polished coal slice is the premise of coal petrology analysis. In order to solve the preparation problem of special coal optical plates, such as brittle samples and aging coal optical plates, a complete preparation process was raised, and the feasibility of the process was verified. The results showed that Rmax was very little affected by secondary preparation, but the maceral group composition content was significantly affected, and the fluctuation of the anthracite' microcomponent was the greatest. When the maceral group composition quantification …

Effect Of Water-Based Nanolubricant Containing Nano-Tio2 On Friction And Wear Behaviour Of Chrome Steel At Ambient And Elevated Temperatures, Hui Wu, Fanghui Jia, Jingwei Zhao, Shuiquan Huang, Lianzhou Wang, Sihai Jiao, Han Huang, Zhengyi Jiang Jan 2019

Effect Of Water-Based Nanolubricant Containing Nano-Tio2 On Friction And Wear Behaviour Of Chrome Steel At Ambient And Elevated Temperatures, Hui Wu, Fanghui Jia, Jingwei Zhao, Shuiquan Huang, Lianzhou Wang, Sihai Jiao, Han Huang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A novel experimental method was developed through a ball-on-disk tribometer to study the friction and wear behaviour of a chrome steel at temperatures of 25, 200 and 500 °C. Water-based nanolubricants containing different concentrations of nano-TiO2 from 0.4 to 8.0 wt% were used to investigate their effects on friction-reduction and anti-wear mechanisms, in comparison to the benchmarks under dry and water conditions. The results show that the water-based nanolubricants can significantly reduce coefficient of friction (COF) and improve wear resistance of the chrome steel at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In particular, the use of nanolubricant containing an optimal concentration …

Analysis And Simulation Of Convolution Reverb Using City Tech’S New Auditorium, Tian Leng Dec 2018

Analysis And Simulation Of Convolution Reverb Using City Tech’S New Auditorium, Tian Leng

Publications and Research

In digital signal processing, convolution reverb can simulate the reverberation of a real acoustic space. The acoustics of different seating areas in an auditorium can vary from each other. To determine the reverberant characteristics of City Tech new building’s auditorium, impulse response (IR) signals are recorded in five key locations of the auditorium.

Directly recorded balloon burst is chosen as the source of impulse source. An omnidirectional and a cardioid microphone with flat frequency response curves are used to record IR signals to 24-bit monophonic wav files. Each IR signal, along with a vocal, is convoluted in MATLAB through both …

A Perceptual Comparison Of “Black Box” Modeling Algorithms For Nonlinear Audio Systems, Paul G. Mayo Aug 2018

A Perceptual Comparison Of “Black Box” Modeling Algorithms For Nonlinear Audio Systems, Paul G. Mayo

Audio Engineering Theses

Nonlinear systems identification is a widespread topic of interest, particularly within the audio industry, as these techniques are employed to synthesize black box models of nonlinear audio effects. Given the myriad approaches to black box modeling, questions arise as to whether an “optimal” approach exists, or one that achieves valid subjective results as a model with minimal computational expense. This thesis uses ABX listening tests to compare black box models of three hardware audio effects using two popular nonlinear implementations, along with two proposed modified implementations. Models were constructed in the Hammerstein form using sine sweeps and a novel measurement …

The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4||Li4Ti5O12(LMNO||LTO) battery possesses a relatively-high energy density and cycle performance, with further enhancement possible by application of an AlF3coating on the LTO electrode particles. We measure the performance enhancement to the LMNO||LTO battery achieved by a AlF3coating on the LTO particles through electrochemical testing and use in-operando neutron powder diffraction to study the changes to the evolution of the bulk crystal structure during battery cycling. We find that the AlF3coating along with parasitic Al doping slightly increases capacity and greatly increases rate capability of the LTO electrode, as well as significantly reducing capacity loss on cycling, facilitating a gradual …

Interfacial Contributions To Anomalous Hall Effect In Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropic [Co2mnsi/Pd]3 Multilayer, Huarui Fu, Caiyin You, Li Ma, Na Tian, Fangqing Xin, Zhenxiang Cheng, Adham Basha, Amit Kohn

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Through engineering the interface between Co2MnSi and Pd, we realize a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and controllable anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in [Co2MnSi(tCMS)/Pd]3multilayers. The multilayers are characterized by a particulatelike layer morphology following annealing at 573 K with weak B2 crystallographic ordering of the Co2MnSi layer. The largest PMA (Keff) of 1.2x106erg/cm3 has been obtained in [Co2MnSi(1.2nm)/Pd]3 multilayer annealed at 573 K. The AHE can be tuned, which we attribute to a varying proximity effect at the Co2MnSi/Pd interface, by varying the annealing temperature and Co2MnSi thickness. According to the expanded AHE scaling relation, we calculate the different contributions …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This article demonstrates in vitro a synergistic effect on 9L gliosarcoma cells when exposed to bromodeoxyuridine (BrUdR) and a low concentration (100 times lower than the IC50) of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), in combination with x-ray irradiation. The synergy is brought about by several important factors including the x-ray beam energy, atomic number of the BrUdR (Z = 35), effectiveness of 5-FU in reducing the available repair processes and distribution of the BrUdR in and around the 9L cells (32% of the total substitution of BrUdR for thymidine into nucleus DNA). Our results show that the synergistic effect, evident in an optimised …

Effect Of Scattered Electrons On The 'Magic Plate' Transmission Array Detector Response, Z A. Alrowaili, Michael L. F Lerch, Marco Petasecca, Martin G. Carolan, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Transmission type detectors can provide a measure of the energy fluence and if they are real-time systems that do not significantly attenuate the radiation beam have a distinct advantage over the current method as Quality Assurance (QA) could in principle be done during the actual patient treatment. The use of diode arrays in QA holds much promise due to real-time operation and feedback when compared to other methods e.g. films which are not real-time. The goal of this work is to describe the characterization of the radiation response of a silicon diode array called the Magic Plate (MP) when operated …

Strain-Induced Ferrite Formation And Its Effect On Mechanical Properties Of A Dual Phase Steel Produced Using Laboratory Simulated Strip Casting, Zhiping Xiong, Ahmed A. Saleh, Andrii Kostryzhev, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Thermo-mechanical processing of a strip cast dual phase (DP) steel was carried out using a Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator. The effect of deformation temperatures in the range from 1050 to 700 °C on the microstructure evolution was investigated using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy along with electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). Strain-induced ferrite (SIF) formation was observed following austenite deformation (∼0.41 reduction) in the 800–700 °C temperature range, leading to a ferrite grain refinement down to 3.1 ± 2.3 μm. A novel segmentation procedure was applied to separate selected EBSD maps into polygonal ferrite, SIF and second phase regions (bainite/martensite). Following …

Radiation therapy is rapidly evolving toward the delivery of higher dose rates to improve cancer treatment. In vitro experiments were performed to investigate the response of 9L and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, exposed to 10 MV X-ray radiations. Up to 8 Gy was delivered at a dose-rate of 50 cGy/min compared to 5 Gy/min. The data obtained emphasizes the importance of taking into account not only the physical, but also the radiobiological parameters, when planning a particular cancer treatment.

Effect Of Groove Spacing On Bond Strength Of Near-Surface Mounted (Nsm) Bonded Joints With Multiple Frp Strips, Shi Shun Zhang, Tao Yu Jan 2017

Effect Of Groove Spacing On Bond Strength Of Near-Surface Mounted (Nsm) Bonded Joints With Multiple Frp Strips, Shi Shun Zhang, Tao Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In the strengthening of existing deficient structures using the near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP method, a group of parallel NSM FRP strips are usually needed to meet the capacity enhancement requirement. When the groove spacing (i.e., the net distance between grooves) is relatively small, the bond behaviour of each NSM FRP strip is detrimentally influenced by the adjacent grooves/FRP strips, and such detrimental effect should be taken into account for a safe design of the NSM FRP strengthening system. All the existing models, however, have been proposed for NSM bonded joints with a single FRP strip and thus cannot consider the …

Effect Of Storage Environment On Hydrogen Generation By The Reaction Of Al With Water, Yin-Qiang Wang, Wei-Zhuo Gai, Xia-Yu Zhang, Hong-Yi Pan, Zhenxiang Cheng, Pingguang Xu, Zhen-Yan Deng

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Al powder was stored in saturated water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen and drying air separately for a time period of up to six months, the degradation behavior of Al activity was characterized by the reaction of Al with water. It was found that water vapor decreased the induction time for the beginning of Al-water reaction and reduced the total hydrogen generation per unit weight of Al, while oxygen increased the induction time and retarded the Al-water reaction. In contrast, the effect of nitrogen and drying air on Al activity was weak. The mechanism analyses indicated that water vapor promoted the hydration …

Vibration Effect On Magnetization And Critical Current Density Of Superconductors, Igor A. Golovchanskiy, Alexey V. Pan, Jonathan George, Frederick Wells, Sergey Fedoseev, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld Jan 2016

Vibration Effect On Magnetization And Critical Current Density Of Superconductors, Igor A. Golovchanskiy, Alexey V. Pan, Jonathan George, Frederick Wells, Sergey Fedoseev, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this work the effect of vibrations on critical current density ( Jc) of superconductors has been studied. The vibrations are shown to affect Jc of all types of superconductors during their measurements, employing a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Increasing vibration frequency ( f ) and/or amplitude (A) leads to progressive reduction of Jc as a function of magnetic field (Ba). The effect of vibrations is substantially stronger in thin films. It leads to development of unexpected kinks on Jc (Ba) curves. Analysis of magnetization loops and relaxation of magnetization in YBCO films revealed that the vibration effect can be …

Systematic Elongation Of Thienyl Linkers And Their Effect On Optical And Electrochemical Properties In Carbazole-Bodipy Donor-Acceptor Systems, Alina Brzeczek, Katarzyna Piwowar, Wojciech Domagala, Mikotaj M. Mikotajczyk, Krzysztof Walczak, Pawel W. Wagner

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Synthesis, spectral and electrochemical properties of a series of new panchromatic BODIPY donor-acceptor-donor derivatives, comprising carbazole conjugated with systematically elongated framework by thiophene-based linkers were investigated. It has been found that elongation of the π-system with one thiophene unit shifts the spectra toward near infrared, while incorporation of next thiophene derivatives has only limited influence on the lowest energy transition, causing no further shift of absorption maxima. Elongation of π-conjugation of the donor arm tunes the electron properties, influencing the ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) values of the molecules. The experimental results are supported by quantum chemical computations …

Effect Of Grain Size On Springback And System Energy In Micro V-Bending With Phosphor Bronze Foil, Zhi Fang, Zhengyi Jiang, Xiaogang Wang, Cunlong Zhou, Xianming Zhao, Xiaoming Zhang, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, the effect of grain size on springback in the micro V-bending process of phosphor bronze foil (face-centered cubic structure) is investigated. Grain size effect is expressed by the ratio of material thickness (T) to average grain size (D), and these T/D values are divided into three groups: larger than 1, less than 1, and approximately equal to 1. It has been found that springback angles were the lowest when T/D ≈ 1. Electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) measurement results show that the twinning boundaries change with the ratios of T/D before and after bending. When T/D > 1, the …

Experimental And Numerical Study On The Effect Of Zddp Films On Sticking During Hot Rolling Of Ferritic Stainless Steel Strip, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Dianyao Gong, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) films on sticking during hot rolling of a ferritic stainless steel strip. The surface characterization and crack propagation of the oxide scale are very important for understanding the mechanism of the sticking. The high-temperature oxidation of one typical ferritic stainless was conducted at 1373 K (1100 °C) for understanding its microstructure and surface morphology. Hot-rolling tests of a ferritic stainless steel strip show that no obvious cracks among the oxide scale were observed with the application of ZDDP. A finite element method model was …

Effect Of Mineral Matter On The Reactivity Of Coke And Its Replication In A Coke Analogue, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Azrin A. Chowdhury, Mark H. Reid, Guangqing Zhang, Merrick R. Mahoney, Kim Hockings Jan 2016

Effect Of Mineral Matter On The Reactivity Of Coke And Its Replication In A Coke Analogue, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Azrin A. Chowdhury, Mark H. Reid, Guangqing Zhang, Merrick R. Mahoney, Kim Hockings

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The reactivity of coke analogues doped with minerals to mimic the mineralogy of specific industrial cokes was compared with the reactivity of the industrial cokes. The reactivity was assessed in a pseudo-CRI type test. This involved reacting the carbonaceous materials (analogue and industrial coke) in CO2 at 1 100°C in a thermos-gravimetric system. In this comparison, the mineral matter added to the coke analogue was prepared from ashing of the industrial cokes. A distinct ranking of reactivity for the industrial cokes was determined to be coke A < coke B < coke C. The high reactivity of coke C was attributed to the high iron content in its ash. The higher reactivity of coke B over coke A was attributed to its higher porosity and lower rank (of the original coal carbon type) of the industrial cokes. The coke analogue replicated the increased reactivity of coke C over cokes A and B, indicating that the coke analogue is able to some extent to replicate the effect of coke mineralogy on coke reactivity in CO2. The use of the coke analogue allowed assessment of the difference in the reactivities of cokes A and B. When porosity and carbon type were fixed by use of the analogue, the reactivities of the analogues of cokes A and B were found to be similar.

The Effect Of Respiratory Induced Density Variations On Non-Tof Pet Quantitation In The Lung, Beverley F. Holman, Vesna Cuplov, Brian F. Hutton, Ashley M. Groves, Kris Thielemans Jan 2016

The Effect Of Respiratory Induced Density Variations On Non-Tof Pet Quantitation In The Lung, Beverley F. Holman, Vesna Cuplov, Brian F. Hutton, Ashley M. Groves, Kris Thielemans

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Accurate PET quantitation requires a matched attenuation map. Obtaining matched CT attenuation maps in the thorax is difficult due to the respiratory cycle which causes both motion and density changes. Unlike with motion, little attention has been given to the effects of density changes in the lung on PET quantitation. This work aims to explore the extent of the errors caused by pulmonary density attenuation map mismatch on dynamic and static parameter estimates. Dynamic XCAT phantoms were utilised using clinically relevant 18F-FDG and 18F-FMISO time activity curves for all organs within the thorax to estimate the expected parameter errors. The …

Coupled Grain Boundary Motion In Aluminium: The Effect Of Structural Multiplicity, Kuiyu Cheng, Liang Zhang, Cheng Lu, Anh Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The shear-induced coupled grain boundary motion plays an important role in the deformation of nanocrystalline (NC) materials. It has been known that the atomic structure of the grain boundary (GB) is not necessarily unique for a given set of misorientation and inclination of the boundary plane. However, the effect of the structural multiplicity of the GB on its coupled motion has not been reported. In the present study we investigated the structural multiplicity of the symmetric tilt Σ 5(310) boundary in aluminium and its influence on the GB behaviour at a temperature range of 300 K-600 K using molecular dynamic …

The Effect Of Binary And Ternary Mineral Combinations On The Reactivity Of A Coke Analogue, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Guangqing Zhang, Azrin A. Chowdhury, Merrick R. Mahoney, Kim Hockings, Mark H. Reid

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The effect of the mineral matter on the reactivity of a coke analogue was examined through the addition of binary and ternary combinations of magnetite (Fe3O4), troilite (FeS) and quartz (SiO2). The use of coke at a laboratory scale has issues arising from it heterogeneity and complex nature. The coke analogue was developed to help alleviate these issues, being a laboratory tool that has a simplified carbon structure and in which the mineral content, particle size and distribution is largely controlled. The reactivity of the coke analogue with CO2 was measured using a TGA system at 1100°C under conditions similar …

Normalized Effect Of Condenser Fouling And Refrigerant Charge On Performance Of Vapor Compression Air Conditioning Systems, Mehdi Mehrabi, David Yuill Dec 2015

Normalized Effect Of Condenser Fouling And Refrigerant Charge On Performance Of Vapor Compression Air Conditioning Systems, Mehdi Mehrabi, David Yuill

David Yuill

Several laboratory experiments have studied the effect of faults on vapor compression cycle air-conditioning
systems. There has been a particular focus on refrigerant charge variation, which is believed to be quite common in air conditioners, and a lesser focus on heat exchanger fouling. The majority of the published results evaluate the fault effects on particular system operating parameters in one unit. For example, the effect on capacity and
efficiency are typically evaluated. The results differ from one study to the next. The current paper summarizes the effects for all of the results available in the literature for condenser fouling and …

Enhancement Of Trace Organic Contaminant Degradation By Crude Enzyme Extract From Trametes Versicolor Culture: Effect Of Mediator Type And Concentration, Ngoc Luong Nguyen, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, Frederic Leusch, Felicity Roddick, S Faraj Magram, William Price, Long Nghiem

Faisal I Hai

The performance of two redox mediating compounds, namely 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) and syringaldehyde (SA), was compared in terms of enhancement of enzymatic degradation of a diverse set of 14 phenolic and 16 non-phenolic trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) and the toxicity of the treated media. Extracellular enzyme extract (predominantly containing laccase) from Trametes versicolor culture achieved efficient degradation (70-95%) of nine phenolic and one non-phenolic TrOCs. Mediator dosing extended the spectrum of efficiently degraded TrOCs to 13 phenolic and three non-phenolic compounds, with moderate improvements in removal of a few other non-phenolic compounds. TrOC removal efficiency improved significantly as the HBT dose …

Effect Of Manufacturing Processes On The Loss Factor And Other Mechanical Properties Of Kenaf Fiber-Reinforced Composites, Brian P. Spackman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The characteristics essential for manufacturing parts and products are not well known for natural fiber-reinforced composite materials. Natural fibers display properties similar to glass fibers, and present a more environmentally friendly option for manufacturing composite materials. This research investigates various parameters in the manufacture of kenaf fiber-reinforced composites including cure time, density, matrix hardener ratio, surface treatment, and fiber length and examines the effect they have on mechanical properties of the composite material. Several samples were created and subjected to a vibrational test. Using known relationships, mechanical properties were extracted from the test results. Samples were found to exhibit repeatable …

Effect Of Tensile Load On The Actuation Performance Of Ph-Sensitive Hydrogels, Sina Naficy, Geoffrey M. Spinks Jan 2015

Effect Of Tensile Load On The Actuation Performance Of Ph-Sensitive Hydrogels, Sina Naficy, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

pH-responsive hydrogels are capable of converting chemical energy to mechanical work. To optimize their use as actuators, their response when operating against an external load must be fully characterized. Here, the actuation strain of a model pH-sensitive hydrogel as a function of different constant loads is studied. The experimental actuation strain, produced by switching the pH from 2 to 12, decreases significantly and monotonically with increasing initial tensile load. Two models are developed to predict the actuation strain as a function of applied stress. Simple mechanical models based on the change in hydrogel modulus and cross sectional area due to …
