Considerations Of The Impacts And System-Level Mitigation Of Electric Vehicle Charging On The Integrated Resource Planning Process, Grant Wollam May 2023

Considerations Of The Impacts And System-Level Mitigation Of Electric Vehicle Charging On The Integrated Resource Planning Process, Grant Wollam

All Theses

Electric vehicles (EV) are growing in popularity and therefore adoption rate. Best estimates predict a 6.2% EV adoption rate by 2035 in the southeastern United States. With this level of EV adoption, utility planners must begin to consider the impact that EVs will have on the power grid. This paper aims to help predict these EV impacts on the power grid. Specifically, an urban-commercial feeder is analyzed in detail to provide worst-case and most-likely results of varying levels of EV impact. Results show that a 26.2% peak increase is the most likely result for this feeder in 2035.

Data-Enabled Distribution Grid Management, Zohreh Sadat Hosseini Jan 2022

Data-Enabled Distribution Grid Management, Zohreh Sadat Hosseini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2020, U.S. electric utilities installed more than 94 million advanced meters, which brought the percentage of residential customers equipped with smart meters to 75%. This significant investment allows collecting extensive customer data at the distribution level, however, the data are not currently leveraged effectively to help with system operations. This dissertation aims to use the smart meters’ data to improve the grid’s reliability, stability, and controllability by solving two of the most challenging problems at the distribution level, namely distribution network phase identification and outage identification.

Distribution networks have typically been the least observable and most dynamic and locally …

Modeling Of A Battery Storage System On A Distribution Feeder, Aaron M. Griego Nov 2017

Modeling Of A Battery Storage System On A Distribution Feeder, Aaron M. Griego

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Driven by the need to reduce harmful emissions and the desire to move away from our dependency on fossil fuels, we have seen a sharp increase in alternative energy research and development within the last decade. Amongst the many alternative energy sources, photovoltaics (PV) is becoming more commonplace in the power utility system.

With these new sources of renewable energy being widely adopted, there are causes for concern that power utility companies must address. One of the more present issues that have been noted is the reliability of the power being delivered; in particular with PV systems. Studies have shown …

Designing A Power Distribution System For The Arce 257 Revit Structural Model, Reid Wilhelm Dec 2016

Designing A Power Distribution System For The Arce 257 Revit Structural Model, Reid Wilhelm

Electrical Engineering

The construction industry needs engineers. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, better known as MEPs, comprise a large number of employees who design and assist in the building of commercial structures. In particular, electrical engineers design power distribution systems for these buildings, including the power, lighting, low voltage, and fire protection subsystems.

Here at Cal Poly, architectural engineers enrolled in ARCE 257 create authentic structural plans for a fictitious two-story structure. This senior project transforms these structural plans into an architectural model and creates a power distribution system for the entire building. This is done through a building information modeling (BIM) …

Integration Of Sel Relays To Provide Motor, Transmission Line, And Transformer Protection, Christopher Ewing, Bryce Keefer Jun 2016

Integration Of Sel Relays To Provide Motor, Transmission Line, And Transformer Protection, Christopher Ewing, Bryce Keefer

Electrical Engineering

The objective of this project is to familiarize the performers with the principles of operation of the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) protective relays in both normal and fault conditions. The SEL-587, SEL-311L and SEL-710 microprocessor-based relays are used to provide protection for a system composed of transformers, simulated transmission lines and a 3-phase induction motor. Each of these relays provides protection by sending a trip signal to local breakers upon sensing a fault condition. The SEL-587 provides overcurrent and differential protection for a 3-phase transformer, while the SEL-311L provides differential and distance protection for a transmission line, and negative sequence. …

General Application Of Smart Inverters In Distribution And Smart Grid, Wenxin Peng Aug 2015

General Application Of Smart Inverters In Distribution And Smart Grid, Wenxin Peng

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The electric grid of the near future will face challenges and opportunities based on two aspects. First, the rapid growth of renewable generations expedites the upgrading of traditional electric grids, allowing more and more distributed generation connected at the customers’ side. Distributed generation units use a wide range of generation technologies, including gas turbines, diesel engines, solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, fuel cells, biomass, and small hydroelectric generators. Under certain penetration level, the grid will experience issues like unexpected voltage rise as well as reverse power flows due to the fluctuation of power production of the distributed generation, especially when …

Statistical Analysis Of Disturbances In Power Transmission Systems, Liu Liu Aug 2014

Statistical Analysis Of Disturbances In Power Transmission Systems, Liu Liu

Masters Theses

Disturbance analysis is essential to the study of the power transmission systems. Traditionally, disturbances are described as megawatt (MW) events, but the access to data is inefficient due to the slow installation and authorization process of the monitoring device. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to disturbance analysis conducted at the distribution level by exploiting the frequency recordings from Frequency Disturbance Recorders (FDRs) of the Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET/GridEye), based on the relationship between frequency change and the power loss of disturbances - linearly associated by the Frequency Response. We first analyze the real disturbance records of North …

Electrical Engineering

The scope of this project encompasses the design and analysis of the Cal Poly Power System at the distribution level using the SKM software environment. The purpose is to accurately model the power system in software so theoretical calculations and analysis can be executed. This requires sufficient preliminary research to obtain data for the main buildings on campus, sound interpretation of one line diagrams, designing the system within the software using realistic values and then performing analysis to model real world situations. The data collected is under maximum load conditions for a specified time period using medium voltage parameters. The …

A Novel Method For Load Flow Analysis Of Unbalanced Three-Phase Radial Distribution Networks, Masoud Aliakbar Golkar Jan 2007

A Novel Method For Load Flow Analysis Of Unbalanced Three-Phase Radial Distribution Networks, Masoud Aliakbar Golkar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a novel method for load flow analysis in radially operated 3-phase distribution networks without solving the well-known conventional load flow equations. The method can be applied for distribution systems in which the loads are unbalanced. As the size of matrix used is very small compared to those in conventional methods, the amount of memory used is very small, the speed is very high, and the relative speed of calculation increases with the size of the system. The method was applied to some practical networks and the results show the superiority of this method over the conventional ones. …
