Exact Controllability Of The Lazer-Mckenna Suspension Bridge Equation, Lanxuan Yu Dec 2014

Exact Controllability Of The Lazer-Mckenna Suspension Bridge Equation, Lanxuan Yu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It is well known that suspension bridges may display certain oscillations under external aerodynamic forces. Since the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in 1940, suspension bridge models have been studied by many researchers. Based upon the fundamental nonlinearity in suspension bridges that the stays connecting the supporting cables and the roadbed resist expansion, but do not resist compression, new models describing oscillations in suspension bridges have been developed by Lazer and McKenna [Lazer and McKenna (1990)]. Except for a paper by Leiva [Leiva (2005)], there have been very few work on controls of the Lazer-McKenna suspension bridge models …

In this study, Si and C were incorporated into polycrystalline MgB2 via in situ reaction of Mg and B with either SiC or with separate Si and C (Si+C). The electrical transport and magnetic properties of the two series of samples were compared. The corrected resistivity at 40K, pA(40K), is higher for the SiC reacted samples regardless of carbon (C) substitution level, indicating larger intragrain scattering because of the simultaneous reaction between Mg and SiC and carbon substitution during the formation of MgB2. In addition, because of the cleaner reaction route for the SiC reacted samples, the calculated active area …

Force Control Of A Tri-Layer Conducting Polymer Actuator Using Optimized Fuzzy Logic Control, Mehmet Itik, Mohammadreza Sabetghadam, Gursel Alici Jan 2014

Force Control Of A Tri-Layer Conducting Polymer Actuator Using Optimized Fuzzy Logic Control, Mehmet Itik, Mohammadreza Sabetghadam, Gursel Alici

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Conducting polymers actuators (CPAs) are potential candidates for replacing conventional actuators in various fields, such as robotics and biomedical engineering, due to their advantageous properties, which includes their low cost, light weight, low actuation voltage and biocompatibility. As these actuators are very suitable for use in micro-nano manipulation and in injection devices in which the magnitude of the force applied to the target is of crucial importance, the force generated by CPAs needs to be accurately controlled. In this paper, a fuzzy logic (FL) controller with a Mamdani inference system is designed to control the blocking force of a trilayer …

Liquid Ink Deposition From An Atomic Force Microscope Tip: Deposition Monitoring And Control Of Feature Size, Cathal D. O'Connell, Michael J. Higgins, David Marusic, Simon E. Moulton, Gordon G. Wallace Jan 2014

Liquid Ink Deposition From An Atomic Force Microscope Tip: Deposition Monitoring And Control Of Feature Size, Cathal D. O'Connell, Michael J. Higgins, David Marusic, Simon E. Moulton, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The controlled deposition of attoliter volumes of liquid inks may engender novel applications such as targeted drug delivery to single cells and localized delivery of chemical reagents at nanoscale dimensions. Although the deposition of small organic molecules from an atomic force microscope tip, known as dip-pen nanolithography (DPN), has been extensively studied, the deposition of liquid inks is little understood. In this work, we have used a set of model ink-substrate systems to develop an understanding of the deposition of viscous liquids using an unmodified AFM tip. First, the growth of dot size with increasing dwell time is characterized. The …

Design And Realization Of A Welding Oscillator, Muci̇z Özcan Jan 2014

Design And Realization Of A Welding Oscillator, Muci̇z Özcan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Welding is one of the most popular methods to combine metal pieces in manufacturing processes. Arc welding, among all welding techniques, is the most commonly used in manufacturing due to its cost and flexibility. During the manufacturing process, arc welding is either performed by an operator or by automatic tools such as welding oscillators. Using automatic tools has advantages over manual use, as the process will be faster, cheaper, and have less welding flaws. In this paper, a homemade welding oscillator and the method to manufacture it are presented. The presented welding oscillator can be manufactured for a very low …

Parameter Identification And Fault Detection For Reliable Control Of Permanent Magnet Motors, Dusan Vukosav Progovac Jan 2014

Parameter Identification And Fault Detection For Reliable Control Of Permanent Magnet Motors, Dusan Vukosav Progovac

Wayne State University Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to develop new fault detection, identification, estimation and control algorithms that will be used to detect winding stator fault, identify the motor parameters and optimally control machine during faulty condition. Quality or proposed algorithms for Fault detection, parameter identification and control under faulty condition will validated through analytical study (Cramer-Rao bound) and simulation. Simulation will be performed for three most applied control schemes: Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), Direct Torque Control (DTC) and Field Oriented Control (FOC) for Permanent Magnet Machines. New detection schemes forfault detection, isolation and machine parameter identification are presented and analyzed. Different control …
