High-Performance Concrete Bridge Decks: A Fast-Track Implementation Study, Volume 1: Structural Behavior, Robert J. Frosch, Timothy S. Aldridge

JTRP Technical Reports

Transverse cracking of concrete bridge decks is problematic in numerous states. Cracking has been identified in the negative and positive moment regions of bridges and can appear shortly after opening the structure to live loads. To improve the service life of the bridge deck as well as decrease maintenance costs, changes to current construction practices in Indiana are being considered. A typical bridge deck was instrumented which incorporated the following: increased reinforcement amounts, decreasing reinforcement spacing, and high-performance, low-shrinkage concrete. The low shrinkage concrete was achieved using a ternary concrete mix. The objective of this research was to determine the …

Curved, Precast, Pretensioned Concrete I-Girder Bridges, Wilast Amorn, Christopher Y. Tuan, Maher K. Tadros Nov 2008

Curved, Precast, Pretensioned Concrete I-Girder Bridges, Wilast Amorn, Christopher Y. Tuan, Maher K. Tadros

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Modern highway construction frequently requires bridges with horizontally curved alignments. Such bridges can be created by superimposing a curved deck slab onto straight girders or by splicing segmental straight girders on the chords of a curved roadway. Of these two methods, a curved superstructure usually results in simpler construction and better appearance.

Flexural Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets And Epoxy Mortar, Byong Y. Bahn, Ronald S. Harichandran Aug 2008

Flexural Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened With Cfrp Sheets And Epoxy Mortar, Byong Y. Bahn, Ronald S. Harichandran

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of using epoxy mortar patch end anchorages on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. More specifically, the effect of the end anchorage on strength, deflection, flexural strain, and interfacial shear stress was examined. The test results show that premature debonding failure of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheet can be delayed or prevented by using epoxy mortar patch end anchorages. A modified analytical procedure for evaluating the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP sheets and epoxy mortar end anchorage is developed …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Quality control and quality assurance in the highway industry is going through a cultural shift. There is a growing trend toward using the contractor data for acceptance and payment purposes. This has led to serious concerns about conflicts of interests. The question remains: are there adequate safeguards in place? To address these concerns, a number of asphalt and concrete QC/QA projects in Kentucky were examined and statistical analyses were conducted. This report presents a summary of findings and recommendations. Generally speaking, the Kentucky experience revealed that the QC/QA system is working well, and the agency’s random inspection data when compared …

Sources Of End Zone Cracking Of Pretensioned Concrete Girders, Christie J. Hasenkamp, Sameh S. Badie, Christopher Y. Tuan, Maher K. Tadros

Civil Engineering Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Recent developments of high performance concrete, increasing amounts of prestressing, and increasing use of deep girders have resulted in increasing popularity of precast pretensioned concrete girders in bridge construction. These developments have increasingly contributed to end zone cracking. This paper summarizes the interim results of an ongoing research sponsored by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 18-14. The objectives of the research are: (1) to establish procedures for the acceptance, repair, or rejection of precast/prestressed concrete girders with longitudinal web cracking, and (2) to prepare a user's manual for the application of these procedures. The results from a …

A Collection Of New Studies Using Existing And Proposed Techniques And Instrumentation For Nondestructive Testing And Analysis Of Concrete Materials And Structures, Shane D. Boone May 2008

A Collection Of New Studies Using Existing And Proposed Techniques And Instrumentation For Nondestructive Testing And Analysis Of Concrete Materials And Structures, Shane D. Boone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A variety of studies were performed using existing and newly proposed techniques and instrumentation to further the understanding of nondestructive testing of concrete. A new combined stress wave propagation method was developed that combined the existing methods of the spectral analysis of surface waves, impact echo, and free-free resonant column experimental and analysis techniques. The method was used to determine the stiffness profile and location of embedded voids in a concrete tunnel lining modeled as a three layer concrete slab. A new equation was proposed that predicted the level of damage of concrete samples based on the functions of the …

Nonlinear Analysis And Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Beam-Columns, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2008

Nonlinear Analysis And Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Beam-Columns, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a nonlinear fiber element analysis method for predicting the behavior of short concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) beam-columns under axial load and biaxial bending. Nonlinear constitutive models for confined concrete and structural steel are considered in the fiber element analysis. Efficient secant algorithms are developed to iterate the depth and orientation of the neutral axis within the composite section to satisfy equilibrium conditions. The accuracy of the fiber element method is established by comparisons with existing solutions. The fiber element analysis program developed is employed to study the effects of steel ratios and concrete strengths on the axial …

The remaining four specimens had steel and polypropylene fibres added in the volumetric ratio of 0.5% and 1.0%. The dimensions of the slab specimens were 82082080 mm and were supported by four rollers at their edges. A displacement controlled point load was applied at the centre of the slabs. The ductilities of the tested slabs were calculated and compared so as their load carrying capacities. Results of the experimental programme were …

Simulation Of The Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading, Faham Tahmasebinia, Alexander Remennikov Jan 2008

Simulation Of The Reinforced Concrete Slabs Under Impact Loading, Faham Tahmasebinia, Alexander Remennikov

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Many older structures were designed for static loads but more recently there has been a growing awareness that some must be designed to resist both dynamic impact and static loads. An accidental impact load can be caused by mishaps in industry as well as accidents stemming from transportation or man-made disasters. There are number of ways of predicting how an impact load will affect a concrete slab, some of which may be impractical or expensive but because there have been significant developments in technology, numerical techniques rather than experimental approaches have become popular methods for developing detailed responses Therefore, to …

Bond Of High Strength Concrete With High Strength Reinforcing Steel, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2008

Bond Of High Strength Concrete With High Strength Reinforcing Steel, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a study about the bond of high strength concrete with high strength steel. Fourteen pull out tests were carried out to determine the bond. The concrete strength was about 70 MPa and the steel was a 500 MPa grade. Bar diameters used were 12, 16, 20, 25, 28, 32 and 36 mm. In order to investigate the effect of cover, each test was done twice, once in a 240 mm diameter concrete cylinder and the second in a 300 mm diameter cylinder. Based on the test results a new equation representing the bond is proposed.

Quality Evaluation Of Portland Cement Concrete At Early Age With Free-Free Resonant Column, Gilberto Wenglas Jan 2008

Quality Evaluation Of Portland Cement Concrete At Early Age With Free-Free Resonant Column, Gilberto Wenglas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

At early age, the behavior and mechanical properties of portland cement concrete changes rapidly with time due to hydration. The hydration process consists of a series of chemical reactions that accelerate nonlinearly with the rise in temperature. The hydration process consists of three stages: the dormant period, the setting time, and the hardening time. Timely opening of roads and resumption of constructions depend of the knowledge of these stages. The initial and final setting times are arbitrarily determined by a standard test (ASTM C 403). Although the setting time has been studied for many decades, the new technologies allow making …
