During the conceptual design stage several concepts are generated, and a few are selected for detailed analyses. CAD models from conceptual design often follow the "over-the-wall" approach for downstream analyses such as FEA, CFD, heat transfer, and vibrations. A CAD-centric approach will be applied to the CAD-to-CFD process to help industry in an ongoing quest to shorten the design cycle time. In routine design of steel storage rack frames, it is far more common to perform two dimensional (2D) rather than three dimensional (3D) linear buckling analyses. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the global buckling behavior of high-rise steel storage rack frames may not be revealed by 2D buckling analyses as 3D interaction modes are involved. It is shown that the monosymmetric upright columns of a high-rise rack frame fail in a flexural–torsional mode due to the shear-center eccentricity of the sections, and that the 3D frame buckling analysis is more reliable in determining the critical members of a …

The paper describes the attributes that should be possessed by a benchmark example for verifying the beam elements used to carry out 3D linear buckling analysis and 3D second-order elastic analysis of steel frames. Based on the attributes described, the paper proposes a suite of benchmark examples selected from the literature. The necessary features of a beam element required to pass the proposed benchmark problems are given, and beam elements that possess these features are cited. The paper also explains the merits of linear buckling analysis examples, and provides a commentary on two well-known examples.

Monolimb refers to a kind of transtibial prostheses having the socket and shank molded into one piece of thermoplastic material. One of its characteristics is that the shank is made of a material that can deform during walking, which can simulate ankle joint motion to some extent. Changes in shank geometry can alter the stress distribution within the monolimb and at the residual limb-socket interface and, respectively, affect the deformability and structural integrity of the prosthesis and comfort perceived by amputees. This paper describes the development of a novel vertical axis wind turbine used for teaching and research purposes. The device is designed to operate at low tip speed ratios and features blades that are symmetric about the mid-chord plane. The blades are actively pitched by means of a mechanical system so that the chord of each blade rotates by 180º for every revolution of the main rotor. One of the attractions of the device is that it is self-starting and produces relatively high torque. Topological partitioning of electronic properties is used to investigate the polarizability of para-nitroaniline and meta-nitroaniline. The distributed polarizabilities for atoms are combined into total local or generalized distributed contributions for the amino, ring, and nitro functional groups; generalized distributed group contributions have not been calculated before. The local group contributions are transferable between the two molecules only when charge transfer is suppressed, but the generalized distributed contributions prove surprisingly similar in the two molecules, apparently because they treat charge-transfer contributions explicitly.
