Students at California Polytechnic University have created an unsafe dirt trail down a hillside west of the Cerro Vista Apartment Complex on the university’s campus. This heavily traveled trail is a shortcut to an existing pedestrian pathway which connects Village Drive to Poly Canyon Village, as well as the R-3 and R-4 parking structures. The use of this trail raises alarm for potential safety concerns for students using it, especially during winter months when the hillside becomes very slippery. In the article, the static characteristics of thermal converters of liquid materials are investigated for three possible operating modes: - at a constant heating power; - at constant temperature difference; - with discrete switching on and off of the heating element. It is shown: that a simpler and more reliable mode of operation: at a more linear static characteristic occurs at mode.It is shown that the reliability of thermal converters of moisture content in liquid materials in tracking gradual failures, taking into account destabilizing factors, when the error of the converters is not more than.

Reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) with single elliptical (SE) reinforcement offers cost savings and is permitted by Canadian and American standards. Yet, its use has not yet gained momentum primarily due to limited knowledge of its structural performance. This study explores the structural behaviour of full-scale 1050 mm and 1200 mm diameter RCP reinforced with SE cold drawn steel wire cage under the Three-Edge Bearing Test. Results indicate that RCP with SE reinforcement designed per current standards did not meet the specified 0.3-mm crack and ultimate load capacity. Hence, pertinent provisions in CSA A257.2 and ASTM C76 for RCP need to …

A prototype will be developed from this reference design for evaluation. This evaluation will include a brief cost/benefit analysis to gauge the efficacy of implementing each layer of security throughout the power electronics design process. An open concrete bridge rail was designed and developed according to safety performance guidelines in the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) for Test Level 4 (TL-4). Systems designed and developed under previous guidance were studied, and their geometric information and full-scale crash testing performance was studied to establish the geometry of the new bridge rail. Yield-Line Theory and the AASHTO Post and Beam design methods were studied, and a modified version of the AASHTO Post and Beam method was utilized to determine the capacity of the new open concrete bridge rail. …

Located in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia is Beaver Creek, a well-known spot for fly-fishing due to its pristine water conditions and open surroundings. In order to maintain these conditions, a 100-foot stretch of Beaver Creek needed to be restored to prevent further erosion, stabilize the banks, and enhance the natural habitats. Few in-vitro models currently exist capable of reproducing the complex microenvironment of bone tissue to support multicellular activity in a three-dimensional structure. Various local governments have developed state-specific vehicular live load factors for bridge rating. However, a significant computational demand is often associated with such an effort. This is due to the large size of the weigh-in-motion (WIM) databases frequently used in the procedure. In this study, a method is proposed that can significantly reduce the computational cost of the analysis, while still maintaining reasonable accuracy.
