Galena Creek Bridge Structural Health Monitoring Instrumentation And Modeling, Leopold Falkensammer Dec 2019

Galena Creek Bridge Structural Health Monitoring Instrumentation And Modeling, Leopold Falkensammer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Structural health monitoring (SHM) of an instrumented structure provides numerous benefits when assessing the long-term condition of the structure against degradation, or the short-term condition after an extreme event, such as an earthquake. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has an interest in expanding the use of SHM for such assessments. Accordingly, the objective of the current study is to develop and implement a permanent SHM system for the Galena Creek Bridge, the largest concrete cathedral arch bridge in the world, to monitor its response to routine traffic and seismic activity. Completed in 2012, the bridge connects Reno and Carson …

Research On Clock Synchronization Of Simulation System Based On Ethernet And Optical Fiber Network, Yulin Meng, Shen Tao, Shuaihao Wang, Lüyi Zhao, Chengshi Tang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: With the development of simulation communication and Ethernet clock synchronization technology, the traditional timing simulation method based on real-time operating system can not meet the accuracy requirements of clock synchronization between multi-simulation systems. A time synchronization method between simulation systems based on IEEE1588 clock synchronization protocol and optical fiber reflection memory network is proposed, in which the Beidou/GPS timing device periodically calibrates the real-time operating system, and the real-time operating system divides the frequency of the calibrated clock information and synchronizes the clock of each simulation system through the high-speed optical fiber reflection memory network. The clock synchronization …

Design And Creation Of A System Of Machines To Automate Quality Control Processes For Atms, Miguel D. Pedrozo Apr 2019

Design And Creation Of A System Of Machines To Automate Quality Control Processes For Atms, Miguel D. Pedrozo

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

This project is based around the quality control processes used to test ATMs. Currently, a person will manually run through each function of the ATM in order to find modes of failure. As the case with all repetitive jobs, it is an unwanted task and is simple enough to be automated. The new solution I propose allows for a system of devices to operate the functions of the ATM autonomously with little to no human intervention. Additionally, this solution is more reliable when diagnosing a problem as it will eventually communicate with the ATM directly in a closed loop system …

Experimental Investigation And Modeling Of The Transformation Of Illicit Drugs In A Pilot-Scale Sewer System, Jiaying Li, Jianfa Gao, Phong K. Thai, Adam Shypanski, Ludwika Nieradzik, Jochen F. Mueller, Zhiguo Yuan, Guangming Jiang Jan 2019

Experimental Investigation And Modeling Of The Transformation Of Illicit Drugs In A Pilot-Scale Sewer System, Jiaying Li, Jianfa Gao, Phong K. Thai, Adam Shypanski, Ludwika Nieradzik, Jochen F. Mueller, Zhiguo Yuan, Guangming Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In-sewer stability of illicit drug biomarkers has been evaluated by several reactor-based studies, but less has beendone in sewer pipes. Experiments conducted in sewer pipes have advantages over lab-scale reactors in providing more realisticbiomarker stability due to theflow and biological dynamics. This study assessed the transportation and transformation of sevenillicit drug biomarker compounds in a pilot-scale rising main and a gravity sewer pipe. Biomarkers presented diverse stabilitypatterns in the pilot sewers, based on which a drug transformation model was calibrated. This model was subsequently validatedusing transformation data sets from the literature, aiming to demonstrate the predictability of the pilot-based transformationcoefficients …

Study On Performance Evaluation Of Co2 Heat Pump System Integrated With Thermal Energy Storage For Space Heating, Zhihua Wang, Yuxin Zheng, Fenghao Wang, Mengjie Song, Zhenjun Ma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

CO2 heat pumps have drawn a great deal of attention owing to their advantages of high efficiency and environmental friendly for heating water under low ambient temperature. However, the system performance is not desirable and shows a lower COP for space heating, especially for a radiator as heating terminal, due to the higher inlet water temperature at the gas cooler, which causes a large throttle loss when the refrigerant flow through the throttling device. To tackle this issue, a transcritical CO2 heat pump system integrated with thermal energy storage (TES) systems was developed in this paper. The heating performance of …

Experimental Evaluation Of A Uwb-Based Cooperative Positioning System For Pedestrians In Gnss-Denied Environment, Jelena Gabela, Guenther Retscher, Salil Goel, Harris Perakis, Andrea Masiero, Charles Toth, Vassilis Gikas, Allison Kealy, Zoltan Koppanyi, Wioleta Blaszczak-Bak, Yan Li, Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Cooperative positioning (CP) utilises information sharing among multiple nodes to enable positioning in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. This paper reports the performance of a CP system for pedestrians using Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology in GNSS-denied environments. This data set was collected as part of a benchmarking measurement campaign carried out at the Ohio State University in October 2017. Pedestrians were equipped with a variety of sensors, including two different UWB systems, on a specially designed helmet serving as a mobile multi-sensor platform for CP. Different users were walking in stop-and-go mode along trajectories with predefined checkpoints and under …

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi Jan 2019

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The container shipping activity has increased significantly with the growth of world economy and global trade. However, due to the imbalance of global trade, there is always an imbalance between import and export containers, which results in that some ports have a surplus of empty containers while the others have a deficit. At a surplus port, storage cost and repositioning cost for shipping companies increase inevitably; while at a deficit port, shipping companies have to lease or purchase empty containers to meet customers’ demand. Empty container repositioning is one of the most effective ways to solve such imbalance problem, however …

Towards A General Prediction System For The Primary Delay In Urban Railways, Jianqing Wu, Luping Zhou, Chen Cai, Fang Dong, Jun Shen, Geng Sun Jan 2019

Towards A General Prediction System For The Primary Delay In Urban Railways, Jianqing Wu, Luping Zhou, Chen Cai, Fang Dong, Jun Shen, Geng Sun

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Nowadays a large amount of data is collected from sensor devices across the cyber-physical networks. Accurate and reliable primary delay predictions are essential for rail operations management and planning. However, very few existing 'big data' methods meet the specific needs in railways. We propose a comprehensive and general data-driven Primary Delay Prediction System (PDPS) framework, which combines General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), Critical Point Search (CPS), and deep learning models to leverage the data fusion. Based on this framework, we have also developed an open source data collection and processing tool that reduces the barrier to the use of the …
