Anomaly detection is quickly becoming a very significant tool for a variety of applications such as intrusion detection, fraud detection, fault detection, system health monitoring, and event detection in IoT devices. An application that lacks a strong implementation for anomaly detection is user trait modeling for user authentication purposes. Autonomous vehicles are an emerging technology that faces challenges, both technical and socioeconomic. This paper first addresses specific technical challenges, such as parsing visual data, communicating with other entities, and making decisions based on environmental knowledge. The technical challenges are to be addressed by the fields of image processing, Vehicle to Everything Communication (V2X), and decision-making systems. Non-technical challenges such as ethical decision making, social acceptance, and economic pushback are also discussed. Ethical decision making is discussed in the framework of deontology vs utilitarianism, while social acceptance of utilitarian autonomous vehicles is also investigated. A new approach to control a grid-connected synchronverter by using a dual heuristic dynamic programing (DHP) design is presented. The disadvantages of conventional synchronverter controller such as the challenges to cope with nonlinearity, uncertainties, and non-inductive grids are discussed. To deal with the aforementioned challenges a neural network–based adaptive critic design is introduced to optimize the associated cost function. The characteristic of the neural networks facilitates the performance under uncertainties and unknown parameters (e.g. different power angles). In this paper a neural network heuristic dynamic programing (HDP) is used for optimal control of the virtual inertia-based control of grid connected three-phase inverters. It is shown that the conventional virtual inertia controllers are not suited for non-inductive grids. A neural network-based controller is proposed to adapt to any impedance angle. Applying an adaptive dynamic programming controller instead of a supervised controlled method enables the system to adjust itself to different conditions. The proposed HDP consists of two subnetworks: critic network and action network. These networks can be trained during the same training cycle to decrease the training time. …

Nucleation is a crucial step in the solution crystallization process. Despite their good development, classical nucleation theory and two-step nucleation theory cannot explain all the nucleation phenomena, especially for the non-classical nucleation phenomena which include oiling out, gelation and non-monotonic nucleation. Accordingly, for the non-classical nucleation systems, the crystallization processes are seldom designed based on the nucleation monitoring and supervision. In this thesis, crystallization process optimization was conducted to study the mechanism of non-classical nucleation phenomena and in-line process monitoring technology development.
