A Practitioner’S Guide To Small Unmanned Aerial Systems For Bridge Inspection, Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas, Calvin Coopmans, Marc Maguire

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Small unmanned aerial system(s) (sUAS) are rapidly emerging as a practical means of performing bridge inspections. Under the right condition, sUAS assisted inspections can be safer, faster, and less costly than manned inspections. Many Departments of Transportation in the United States are in the early stages of adopting this emerging technology. However, definitive guidelines for the selection of equipment for various types of bridge inspections or for the possible challenges during sUAS assisted inspections are absent. Given the large investments of time and capital associated with deploying a sUAS assisted bridge inspection program, a synthesis of authors experiences will be …

University Of Rhode Island Course Information Assistant, Daniel Gauthier May 2019

University Of Rhode Island Course Information Assistant, Daniel Gauthier

Senior Honors Projects

Personal voice-interactive systems have become ubiquitous in daily life. There are many of these digital assistants such as Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. The chances are high you have access to one right now. This technology has reached a point where the context of a conversation can be maintained, which is a vast improvement over earlier technology. Interactions without conversational context can limit interactions greatly and this was the case for previous digital assistants. Every time someone would say something to an assistant, it was like they were constantly changing operators on a customer service line. The assistants can now …

Bridgr: An Ios Application For Organizing And Discussing Long-Distance Carpooling, Harrison Engoren, Erik Zorn Apr 2019

Bridgr: An Ios Application For Organizing And Discussing Long-Distance Carpooling, Harrison Engoren, Erik Zorn

Senior Theses

Bridgr is an iOS application that facilitates long distance carpooling. This application allows drivers to post destinations on an interactable map so that they can be linked with students that need a ride to a location within close proximity of the posted destination. The riders and driver are linked in a common chat board where they can discuss ride details among themselves. The goal of Bridgr is to allow drivers to utilize extra space in their car in turn for fellowship and/or gas money.

Modern Yard Sale Application, Lauren Epling, Matthew Piasecki Mar 2019

Modern Yard Sale Application, Lauren Epling, Matthew Piasecki

Computer Science and Software Engineering

YardSail is a modern application that provides users a place to post and view local Yard Sales. There is an astounding need for a safe space where users can comfortably post their yard sale address and items for all locals to easily see (without needing to drive down a specific street to find out). Currently, there does not exist an application for users that accomplishes what we set out to accomplish. As a team, we truly believe YardSail could be a popular application that helps users sail through the experience of hosting or visiting a yard sale.

The Application Of Evolutionary Computation And Metaheuristics For Solving The Network Design Problems, Mehrdad Amirghasemi, Bo Du, Johan Barthelemy, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Pascal Perez Jan 2019

The Application Of Evolutionary Computation And Metaheuristics For Solving The Network Design Problems, Mehrdad Amirghasemi, Bo Du, Johan Barthelemy, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Network Design Problems (NDPs) can model many real-life problems in a wide range of domains from transportation, supply chain management and logistics, through to the design of telecommunication networks and airline routes. NDPs are generally tackled through employing sophisticated exact methods and (meta-)heuristics. Exact methods mainly include mixed integer programming, column generation, and branch and bound techniques. Metaheuristics, as the second strategy of solving NDPs, can comprise any construction methods, local searches (point-based), evolutionary (population-based) techniques as well as their hybrids. In this abstract, we discuss the challenges and potentials of designing an effective hybrid metaheuristic for solving NDPs by …

Real-Time Sound Source Separation For Music Applications, Dan Barry Jan 2019

Real-Time Sound Source Separation For Music Applications, Dan Barry

Doctoral

Sound source separation refers to the task of extracting individual sound sources from some number of mixtures of those sound sources. In this thesis, a novel sound source separation algorithm for musical applications is presented. It leverages the fact that the vast majority of commercially recorded music since the 1950s has been mixed down for two channel reproduction, more commonly known as stereo. The algorithm presented in Chapter 3 in this thesis requires no prior knowledge or learning and performs the task of separation based purely on azimuth discrimination within the stereo field. The algorithm exploits the use of the …

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw Jan 2019

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Smart Parking Deck employs elementary circuit design elements and mobile application development. Each device module uses laser proximity sensors to check the availability of an individual parking space and a Zigbee unit to communicate with the adjacent device module. The modules are connected to a network hub that manages all of the incoming and outgoing parking data. This data is displayed on the mobile application. The system is easily manageable and energy efficient, significantly decreasing the costs associated with other smart parking systems on the market. This system is aimed at decreasing commute time for students by allowing them …

Speech Enabled Navigation In Virtual Environments, Raksha Rajashekar Jan 2019

Speech Enabled Navigation In Virtual Environments, Raksha Rajashekar

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Navigating in a Virtual Environment with traditional input devices such as mouse, joysticks and keyboards provide limited maneuverability and is also time consuming. While working in a virtual environment, changing parameters to obtain the desired visualization requires time to achieve by manually entering parameter values in an algorithm to test outcomes. The following thesis presents an alternate user interface to reduce user efforts, while navigating within the Virtual Environment. The user interface is an Android application which is designed to accommodate spoken commands. This Speech Enabled User Interface termed as the Speech Navigation Application (SNA), provides the user with an …
