Survey Of Insulation Systems In Electrical Machines, Rasul Hemmati, Fan Wu, Ayman M. El-Refaie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Insulating materials and insulation systems design have been gaining more attentions as more electrical machines tend to operate in harsher environments for various applications. Harsh environments include high temperature, humidity, erosion, low air pressure, etc. This paper discusses recent advances in insulation systems for electrical machines. Insulation tests as well as test standards that have been used to evaluate insulation systems and detect insulation failures will be discussed. Insulating materials used for a wide range of industrial applications such as wind turbine generators, aerospace hybrid/electric powertrain, and hydro generators have been summarized. For the emerging high-altitude, highvoltage aerospace applications, partial …

The Influence Of Heat Treatment On Corrosion Behavior Of Martensitic Stainless Steel Uns 42670, Armen Kvryan May 2019

The Influence Of Heat Treatment On Corrosion Behavior Of Martensitic Stainless Steel Uns 42670, Armen Kvryan

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Ceaseless demand for lighter, faster, and more efficient aircraft has been one of the greatest driving forces behind bearing steel innovations. Recent studies demonstrate that corrosion is one of the leading causes of bearing failure in both military and commercial aircraft. High-performing bearing steels are available but are not being used in US military applications due to high cost and security issues when steels are produced outside of the continental United States. One approach to address this issue is to engineer steels that are cost-efficient and heat treated for corrosion resistance, long wear life, etc.

This dissertation presents information on …

Development Of A Multi-Probe Kelvin Scanner Device For Industrially-Relevant Characterization Of Surface-Activated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites, Kirby Simon May 2019

Development Of A Multi-Probe Kelvin Scanner Device For Industrially-Relevant Characterization Of Surface-Activated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites, Kirby Simon

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) composites are becoming increasingly attractive materials in manufacturing due to their lightweight nature, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. Surface activation of these materials is usually required during processing to increase the bond strength of assemblies (aerospace and automotive industries) or improve adhesion with implants (biomedical industry). Industrially-relevant, nondestructive quality control methods for assessing the activation state of these materials do not currently exist, however. Applying principles discovered through the use of scanning probe microscopy, a multiple-probe Kelvin scanning (MPKS) device has been developed that can assess the uniformity of the activation state of plasma-treated CFRTP …

Extreme Altitude Search And Rescue Helicopter, Matthew J. De Sieno, Anthony Chavarria, David Stuver, Zach Boss Apr 2019

Extreme Altitude Search And Rescue Helicopter, Matthew J. De Sieno, Anthony Chavarria, David Stuver, Zach Boss

Senior Design Project For Engineers

The goal of this design was to develop an extreme altitude rescue helicopter capable of retrieving hikers stranded on top of Mount Everest. Using the Eurocopter AS350 as a baseline, a conceptual model was produced that is fully capable of hovering and delivering forward flight at the desired altitude of 8,848 meters. Combined blade element momentum theory, proper airfoil selection, and forward flight calculations were utilized in order to optimize the rotor for the given flight conditions on top of Mount Everest. Conceptual fluid dynamics and CAD modeling aided in the process of visually designing the fuselage and rotor. Not …

Structural Health Monitoring And Non-Destructive Inspection Of Composite And Metallic Structures, Asaad Qasim Migot Apr 2019

Structural Health Monitoring And Non-Destructive Inspection Of Composite And Metallic Structures, Asaad Qasim Migot

Theses and Dissertations

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques are being used as effective tools for investigating variety of civil, mechanical, and aerospace applications. In recent years, these techniques become such incredible tools for continuously monitoring of various structures. The aim of the dissertation work is to develop SHM and NDT methodologies for acoustic emission sources localization, damage detection and quantification in metallic and composite structures using a network of sensors, guided wave and developed imaging methods. This work is implemented through preparing metallic and composite specimens, setting up experiments, designing efficient networks of sensors, modeling guided wave interaction with …

Corrosion Initiation And Propagation On Carburized Martensitic Stainless Steel Surfaces Studied Via Advanced Scanning Probe Microscopy, Armen Kvryan, Corey M. Efaw, Kari A. Higginbotham, Olivia O. Maryon, Paul H. Davis, Elton Graugnard, Michael F. Hurley Mar 2019

Corrosion Initiation And Propagation On Carburized Martensitic Stainless Steel Surfaces Studied Via Advanced Scanning Probe Microscopy, Armen Kvryan, Corey M. Efaw, Kari A. Higginbotham, Olivia O. Maryon, Paul H. Davis, Elton Graugnard, Michael F. Hurley

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Historically, high carbon steels have been used in mechanical applications because their high surface hardness contributes to excellent wear performance. However, in aggressive environments, current bearing steels exhibit insufficient corrosion resistance. Martensitic stainless steels are attractive for bearing applications due to their high corrosion resistance and ability to be surface hardened via carburizing heat treatments. Here three different carburizing heat treatments were applied to UNS S42670: a high-temperature temper (HTT), a low-temperature temper (LTT), and carbo-nitriding (CN). Magnetic force microscopy showed differences in magnetic domains between the matrix and carbides, while scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) revealed a 90–200 …

Sweep And Taper Analysis Of Surfboard Fins Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Brandon James Baldovin Mar 2019

Sweep And Taper Analysis Of Surfboard Fins Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Brandon James Baldovin

Master's Theses

The research presented here provides a basis for understanding the hydrodynamics of surfboard fin geometries. While there have been select studies on fins there has been little correlation to the shape of the fin and its corresponding hydrodynamic performance. This research analyzes how changing the planform shape of a surfboard fin effects its performance and flow field. This was done by isolating the taper and sweep distribution of a baseline geometry and varying each parameter individually whilst maintaining a constant span and surface area. The baseline surfboard fin was used as a template in Matlab to generate a set of …

Aviation Cybersecurity: An Overview, Gary C. Kessler, J. Philip Craiger Jan 2019

Aviation Cybersecurity: An Overview, Gary C. Kessler, J. Philip Craiger

J. Philip Craiger, Ph.D.

Information security—aka cybersecurity—is the most rapidly growing threat to critical infrastructures, including the aviation industry. Due to the plethora of digital devices, ubiquity of the Internet and other networks, and the rapid growth in the adoption of technology, everyone is an information system security manager. Every professional in the aviation and aeronautics industry use computers, mobile devices, tablets, GPS devices, and/or other hardware on a daily basis, as well as go online for a variety of reasons.

Attacks on information have been ongoing since the inception of the industry a hundred years ago, in such forms as intellectual property theft …
