Building Along The Railroad: Towns And Tourism In Michigan’S Eastern Upper Peninsula, Bridget Stoetzer
Honors Projects
The state of Michigan is not solely the lower portion or in other words the “mitten.” It is a combination of the lower and upper peninsula. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (abbreviated the “UP”) is the upper portion of Michigan that is surrounded on three sides by three different Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron. It connects to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan by the Mackinac Bridge which crosses five miles across the Straits of Mackinac.
The counties of the Eastern Upper Peninsula are Alger, Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac, and Schoolcraft. They are marked by large stretches of …
Improving 3d Printed Prosthetics With Sensors And Motors, Rachel Zarin
Improving 3d Printed Prosthetics With Sensors And Motors, Rachel Zarin
Honors Projects
A 3D printed hand and arm prosthetic was created from the idea of adding bionic elements while keeping the cost low. It was designed based on existing models, desired functions, and materials available. A tilt sensor keeps the hand level, two motors move the wrist in two different directions, a limit switch signals the fingers to open and close, and another motor helps open and close the fingers. All sensors and motors were built on a circuit board, programmed using an Arduino, and powered by a battery. Other supporting materials include metal brackets, screws, guitar strings, elastic bands, small clamps, …

Computer Vision Machine Learning And Future-Oriented Ethics, Abagayle Lee Blank
Honors Projects
Computer Vision Machine Learning (CVML) in the application of facial recognition is currently being researched, developed, and deployed across the world. It is of interest to governments, technology companies, and consumers. However, fundamental issues remain related to human rights, error rates, and bias. These issues have the potential to create societal backlash towards the technology which could limit its benefits as well as harm people in the process. To develop facial recognition technology that will be beneficial to society in and beyond the next decade, society must put ethics at the forefront. Drawing on AI4People’s adaption of bioethics for AI, …
Machine Learning With Multi-Class Regression And Neural Networks: Analysis And Visualization Of Crime Data In Seattle, Erkin David George
Machine Learning With Multi-Class Regression And Neural Networks: Analysis And Visualization Of Crime Data In Seattle, Erkin David George
Honors Projects
This article examines the implications of machine learning algorithms and models, and the significance of their construction when investigating criminal data. It uses machine learning models and tools to store, clean and analyze data that is fed into a machine learning model. This model is then compared to another model to test for accuracy, biases and patterns that are detected in between the experiments. The data was collected from data.seattle.gov and was published by the City of Seattle Data Portal and was accessed on September 17, 2018. This research will be looking into how machine learning models can be used …
Aviation Sustainability, Elizabeth Gemmer
Aviation Sustainability, Elizabeth Gemmer
Honors Projects
Sustainability in aviation has become a prominent issue. There is a substantial amount of information on sustainability measures taken and discussed at the local and global levels. However, the information is spread out over a wide array of sources and many people are not aware of what is being done. There have been many past efforts to integrate sustainability into aviation, those efforts continue today and will continue into the future. Aviation is a rapidly growing industry; as the industry grows and there becomes even more of a need for sustainability measures to keep it a viable mode of transport, …
