Simplicity Of Algebras Associated To Non-Hausdorff Groupoids, Lisa Orloff Clark, Ruy Exel Filho, Enrique Pardo, Aidan Sims, Charles Starling

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

We prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for Steinberg algebras associated to non-Hausdorff ample groupoids. We also prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for the C*-algebra associated to non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. Then we show how our results apply in the setting of tight representations of inverse semigroups, groups acting on graphs, and self-similar actions. In particular, we show that the C*-algebra and the complex Steinberg algebra of the self-similar action of the Grigorchuk group are simple but the Steinberg algebra with coefficients in Z2 is not simple.

Effect Of Temperature And Strain Rate On The Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Ferritic Stainless Steel, Guoqing Zu, Yukuan Lu, Yi Yan, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingwei Zhao, Wei Du, Xu Ran, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The flow behaviour and microstructure characteristics of a ferritic stainless steel were investigated using plain strain compression test on a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical test simulator with a hydrawedge system in the temperature range of 850-1100 °C and strain rate range of 0.1-50 s−1. The phenomenological constitutive model and the relationship between the Zener-Hollomon (Z) parameter and flow stress were established. The results reveal that the flow softening phenomenon occurs at high strain rate, which is caused by the coupling effect of the adiabatic heating and dynamic recrystallisation (DRX). New grains nucleate preferentially at the original grain boundaries by …

Understanding The Self-Sintering Process Of Bos Filter Cake For Improving Its Recyclability, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, David J. Pinson, Sheng Chew

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) filter cake has been found to undergo a self-sintering process, improving its mechanical properties to allow easier recycling and utilization on plant. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the self-sintering of the BOS filter cake in terms of what reactions occurred, and how strength developed in the filter cake during self-sintering. The approach used was to characterize samples before reaction, and to measure the reactivity of the BOS filter cake during heating in air. Reacted samples were characterized and compared to self-sintered samples from the plant. The BOS filter cake consisted …

Effects Of Ni And Cr On Cryogenic Impact Toughness Of Bainite/Martensite Multiphase Steels, Zishan Yao, Guang Xu, Zhengyi Jiang, Junyu Tian, Qing Yuan, Hongwei Ma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In the present research, the effects of Nickel (Ni) and Chromium (Cr) on cryogenic impact toughness (CIT) of low-carbon bainite/martensite multiphase steels [processed by two different cooling processes: isothermal transformation process (ITP) and continuous cooling process (CCP)] were investigated. It was found that due to the formation of carbides during isothermal treatment, the addition of Ni and Cr yielded no significant improvements in CIT. However, during CCP treatment, the addition of Ni manifested a considerable enhancement in CIT, whereas the addition of both Ni and Cr caused a decrease in CIT. Further, after ITP treatment, the microstructure of all steels …

Experimental Investigation On The Mechanical And Tribological Coupled Behaviour Of Bimetal Composite Under Different States, Zhou Li, Jingwei Zhao, Hui Wu, Fanghui Jia, Ye Yao, Qingfeng Zhang, Sihai Jiao, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Wear resistance and excellent mechanical properties are the main requirements in industrial applications of bimetal composites. The interfacial evolution of duplex stainless steel/low carbon steel (2205/AH36) bimetal composite after annealing and its tribological behaviour in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated in this study. The bonding interface evolution between two layers plays a critical role in mechanical properties of composite, and the surface microstructure of stainless steel layer determines the wear and corrosion resistance. The hot-rolled composite samples were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 850 to 1150 °C in steps of 100 °C for 1 h. Optical microscopy …

Metamorphic Relations For Detection Of Performance Anomalies, Owen Johnston, Darryl C. Jarman, Jeffrey Berry, Zhi Q. Zhou, Tsong Yueh Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Metamorphic relations can be used to improve performance testing by comparing successive runs of the software under test. We examine one such metamorphic relation for page load times, which we used to discover and repair a race condition in the Adobe Experience Platform Launch Tag Manager. Histograms for page load times had different modalities, which alerted us to the presence of the bug. We discuss the need for performance measures in addition to the popular mean and standard deviation. We describe two approaches to automatically determine modality: Gaussian Mixture Models and the Silverman Test for Multimodality. Metamorphic relations which involve …

Beam-Based Analog Self-Interference Cancellation With Auxiliary Transmit Chains In Full-Duplex Mimo Systems, Anh Tuyen Le, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Y J. Guo Jan 2019

Beam-Based Analog Self-Interference Cancellation With Auxiliary Transmit Chains In Full-Duplex Mimo Systems, Anh Tuyen Le, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Y J. Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Analog domain cancellation has been considered as the most important step to mitigate self-interference (SI) in fullduplex (FD) radios. However, in FD multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems, this method faces a critical issue of complexity since the number of cancellation circuits increases quadratically with the number of antennas. In this paper, we propose a beam-based radio frequency SI cancellation architecture which uses adaptive filters to significantly reduce the complexity. Data symbols for all the beams are up-converted by auxiliary transmit chains to provide reference signals for all adaptive filters. Hence, the number of cancellation circuits becomes proportional to the number of …

Variance And Volatility Swaps Under A Two-Factor Stochastic Volatility Model With Regime Switching, Xinjiang He, Song-Ping Zhu Jan 2019

Variance And Volatility Swaps Under A Two-Factor Stochastic Volatility Model With Regime Switching, Xinjiang He, Song-Ping Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this paper, the pricing problem of variance and volatility swaps is discussed under a two-factor stochastic volatility model. This model can be treated as a two-factor Heston model with one factor following the CIR process and another characterized by a Markov chain, with the motivation originating from the popularity of the Heston model and the strong evidence of the existence of regime switching in real markets. Based on the derived forward characteristic function of the underlying price, analytical pricing formulae for variance and volatility swaps are presented, and numerical experiments are also conducted to compare swap prices calculated through …

A Novel Data Forwarding Strategy For A Drone Delay Tolerant Network With Range Extension, Saeid Iranmanesh, Raad Raad Jan 2019

A Novel Data Forwarding Strategy For A Drone Delay Tolerant Network With Range Extension, Saeid Iranmanesh, Raad Raad

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Amazon, Uber Eats, and United Parcel Service (UPS) are planning to launch drone delivery services in the near future. Indeed, recently, Google has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for its Wings delivery platform. Amazon claims that a drone logistics network is more cost-efficient and quicker than a motor vehicle delivery network. In this paper, we propose a data delivery service by the drone network in addition to parcel delivery. We propose Heuristic Flight Path Planning (HFPP) that plans a drone's flight path based on parcel delivery destination as well as data delivery destinations (waypoints). We further extend the solution …

Experimental Characterization Of Wildfire Sprinkler Sprays Using High-Speed Videography, Alan Green, Paul Cooper Jan 2019

Experimental Characterization Of Wildfire Sprinkler Sprays Using High-Speed Videography, Alan Green, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

External sprinkler systems are one of a relatively small number of measures that are frequently recommended for the protection of houses from wildfires. However, very little scientific work appears to have been undertaken to evaluate their effectiveness. Numerical simulation techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) could be used to investigate spray performance in the conditions of a wildfire; however, detailed characteristics of the sprays typically implemented in wildfire sprinkler systems must first be known so that they can be accurately represented in such simulations. This paper presents the results of an in-depth experimental investigation into the spatiotemporal distributions of …

The Simultaneous Mitigation Of Slow And Fast Voltage Fluctuations Caused By Rooftop Solar Pv By Controlling The Charging/Discharging Of An Integrated Battery Energy Storage System, Prabha Ariyaratna, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto Jan 2019

The Simultaneous Mitigation Of Slow And Fast Voltage Fluctuations Caused By Rooftop Solar Pv By Controlling The Charging/Discharging Of An Integrated Battery Energy Storage System, Prabha Ariyaratna, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Both slow and fast voltage fluctuations in the connected low voltage (LV) distribution feeder are caused by intermittent variations in solar PV power output, in addition to the variations in load demand where rooftop solar photo-voltaic (PV) unit penetration is higher. A single energy storage system integrated with the solar PV unit can mitigate these fluctuations in voltage profile. A novel analytical approach to mitigate both slow and fast voltage fluctuations simultaneously in the connected LV distribution feeder is proposed, which has not explicitly been addressed in the literature. Integrated battery energy storage systems will be dynamically charged during mid-day …

Explicit Finite Difference Analysis Of An Unsteady Magnetohydrodynamics Heat And Mass Transfer Micropolar Fluid Flow In The Presence Of Radiation And Chemical Reaction Through A Vertical Porous Plate, R Biswas, M Mondal, Kazi Shanchia, Rubel Ahmed, S Samad, S Ahmmed

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The investigation of this paper is undertaken to study of the problem of chemical reaction on MHD unsteady heat and mass transfer effects of micropolar fluid flow through a vertical plate. Different effects such as thermal diffusion, Soret and Dufour effects in the presence of radiation and chemical reaction are permitted in this observation. Firstly, the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) are transformed into a system of dimensionless coupled partial differential equations by the procedure of mathematical transformation. Then the obtained dimensionless equations are solved by explicit finite difference method (EFDM). Further, the momentum, temperature and concentration distributions are permitted …

Influences Of Load And Microstructure On Tribocorrosion Behaviour Of High Strength Hull Steel In Saline Solution, Hui Wu, Yan Li, Zhou Li, Xiawei Cheng, Mahadi Hasan, Hongmei Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The tribocorrosion behaviour of two diferent hull steels (namely, EH36 and EH47) was investigated using a ball-on-disk tribometer under varying normal loads from 10 to 100 N in a 3.5 wt% NaCl saline solution. Sliding in pure water was also performed for a comparison purpose. The results indicate that the corrosion products mainly consist of lath lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) with residual NaCl crystals when sliding against both steels EH36 and EH47 in the saline solution. Tribocorrosion on EH36 (pearlitic steel) shows lower coefcient of friction (COF) values than those obtained in water, while tribocorrosion on EH47 (bainitic steel) leads to higher …

Protecting The Visual Fidelity Of Machine Learning Datasets Using Qr Codes, Yang-Wai Chow, Willy Susilo, Jianfeng Wang, Richard Buckland, Joon Sang Baek, Jongkil Kim, Nan Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Machine learning is becoming increasingly popular in a variety of modern technology. However, research has demonstrated that machine learning models are vulnerable to adversarial examples in their inputs. Potential attacks include poisoning datasets by perturbing input samples to mislead a machine learning model into producing undesirable results. Such perturbations are often subtle and imperceptible from a human's perspective. This paper investigates two methods of verifying the visual fidelity of image based datasets by detecting perturbations made to the data using QR codes. In the first method, a verification string is stored for each image in a dataset. These verification strings …

Coating Film Profiles Generated By Fluctuating Location Of The Wiping Pressure And Shear Stress, Andrew D. Johnstone, Buyung Kosasih, Le Quang Phan, Andrew E. Dixon, Wayne A. Renshaw

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Impinging planar jets are a widely used means of removing excess drag-out coating material from steel strip in order to control the final thickness of the applied coating. A wide range of possible coating defects are known to occur for this process, many of which are suspected to have their origin in the spatio-temporal characteristics of the air jets. It is therefore of interest to improve understanding of the link between the unsteady flow behaviour inherent to impinging jets and the evolution of the coating free surface produced by the gas-wiping process. In this paper, the coating response, characterised by …

Integrated Trajectory Planning And Control For Obstacle Avoidance Manoeuvre Using Non-Linear Vehicle Mp Algorithm, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li, Bangji Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In the current literature, model-predictive (MP) algorithm is widely applied in autonomous vehicle trajectory planning and control but most of the current studies only apply the linear tyre model, which cannot accurately present the tyre non-linear characteristic. Furthermore, most of these studies separately consider the trajectory planning and trajectory control of the autonomous vehicle and few of them have integrated the trajectory planning and trajectory control together. To fill in above research gaps, this study proposes the integrated trajectory planning and trajectory control method using a non-linear vehicle MP algorithm. To fully utilise the advantages of four-wheel-independent-steering and four-wheel-independent-driving vehicle, …

Modeling For Optical Feedback Laser Diode Operating In Period-One Oscillation And Its Application, Bin Liu, Yuxi Ruan, Yanguang Yu, Qinghua Guo, Jiangtao Xi, Jun Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

An optical feedback laser diode (OFLD) operating in period-one oscillation (POO) with a moving external target is investigated by exploring its potential sensing capability. First, the modeling of an OFLD-POO sensing system is presented. An analytical expression is derived for OFLD-POO sensing signal, from which a new displacement measurement method is developed. The proposed sensing model is verified by the well-known Lang-Kobayashi equations used to describe the dynamic behavior of a laser with optical feedback. Then, an experimental OFLD-POO system is built in order to demonstrate an application example for displacement sensing. The measurement results show that the OFLD-POO sensing …

Geogrid-Confined Pervious Geopolymer Concrete Piles With Frp-Pvcconfined Concrete Core: Concept And Behaviour, Haiqiu Zhang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as strengthening materials for piles was found to be a promising scheme, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, high durability and high anti-corrosion ability. This study presents an experimental investigation of a new form of composite piles: geogrid-confined pervious geopolymer concrete piles (GPGCPs) with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-confined concrete core (FPCC). The GPGCP with FPCC consists of a circular geogrid outer tube, a FRP-PVC-confined normal geopolymer concrete core, and pervious geopolymer concrete (PGC) filled in between. The reason for applying PGC into piles is to increase the …

Authorized Equality Test On Identity-Based Ciphertexts For Secret Data Sharing Via Cloud Storage, Hongbo Li, Qiong Huang, Sha Ma, Jian Shen, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

With the higher rate of using cloud storage, protecting data privacy becomes an important issue. The most effective solution is to encrypt data before uploading to the cloud. However, how to efficiently search over data encrypted with different keys is still an open problem. To address this problem, we introduce a new notion of the identity-based encryption with equality test supporting flexible authorization (IBEET-FA). It supports the test of whether two ciphertexts encrypted under the different keys encapsulate the same message, and in the meanwhile supports fine-grained authorization of the test. Based on the equality test on ciphertexts, there is …

Three-Dimensional Measurement With Reflection Suppression Based On High-Dynamic Range Images, Limei Song, Yuan Ru, Yangang Yang, Qinghua Guo, Xinjun Zhu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

To deal with the three-dimensional (3-D) point cloud loss caused by object reflection in the active fringe projection 3-D measurement, an active reflection suppression method for 3-D measurement is proposed. The method employs high-dynamic range images obtained by multiple exposure image fusion and a three-wavelength phase-shift profilometry method to achieve high-precision 3-D measurement of reflective objects. Experimental results show that, compared to traditional 3-D measurement methods, the proposed one can more effectively handle reflections thereby avoiding 3-D point cloud loss in the measurement of reflective objects.

Characterization Of Amorphous Magnetic Materials Under High-Frequency Non-Sinusoidal Excitations, Md. Ashib Rahman, Md Rabiul Islam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto Jan 2019

Characterization Of Amorphous Magnetic Materials Under High-Frequency Non-Sinusoidal Excitations, Md. Ashib Rahman, Md Rabiul Islam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In power electronic based energy conversion, the high-frequency transformer (HFT) is usually excited with a high-frequency (HF) square wave voltage generated from a power electronic converter circuit (PEC). A PEC needs a reasonable dead-band (DB) and the inclusion of the DB changes the shape of the square wave. In this paper, for the characterization of the core, the DB is varied to produce different non-sinusoidal excitation voltages and an optimized excitation voltage is identified. The effect of the DB on the hysteresis loop of the HFT is also demonstrated. The mathematical analysis shows that the inclusion of the DB causes …

Towards Multi-User Searchable Encryption Supporting Boolean Query And Fast Decryption, Yunling Wang, Jianfeng Wang, Shi Sun, Joseph K. Liu, Willy Susilo, Joon Sang Baek, Ilsun You, Xiaofeng Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Searchable encryption enables the data owner to outsource their data to the cloud server while retaining the search ability. Recently, some researchers proposed a variant of searchable encryption, named single-writer/multi-reader searchable encryption (SMSE), in which any authorized data user can perform a search query. That is, each document identifier is encrypted using attribute-based encryption (ABE), such that an arbitrary authorized user whose attributes match the corresponding access policy can access the document. However, the cloud server cannot determine whether the user has the ability to decrypt the matched data. Thus, it has to response all the search results to the …

Consequence Modelling Of Co2 Pipeline Failure, Xiong Liu, Ajit R. Godbole, Cheng Lu, Guillaume Michal, Valerie M. Linton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper describes the experimental investigation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the dispersion of CO2 following high-pressure dense phase CO2 pipeline failure. A full-scale burst test was carried out to simulate a CO2 pipeline failure in the real world. The atmospheric dispersion of the CO2 following the explosive release was measured. The CFD models were validated against the experimental data. The models were then used to estimate the consequence distances related to CO2 dispersion following failure of pipelines with various diameters under different wind speeds. This approach provides a predictive formula for the consequence distances of CO2 transmission …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In-sewer stability of illicit drug biomarkers has been evaluated by several reactor-based studies, but less has beendone in sewer pipes. Experiments conducted in sewer pipes have advantages over lab-scale reactors in providing more realisticbiomarker stability due to theflow and biological dynamics. This study assessed the transportation and transformation of sevenillicit drug biomarker compounds in a pilot-scale rising main and a gravity sewer pipe. Biomarkers presented diverse stabilitypatterns in the pilot sewers, based on which a drug transformation model was calibrated. This model was subsequently validatedusing transformation data sets from the literature, aiming to demonstrate the predictability of the pilot-based transformationcoefficients …

Pricing European Call Options Under A Hard-To-Borrow Stock Model, Guiyuan Ma, Song-Ping Zhu, Wenting Chen Jan 2019

Pricing European Call Options Under A Hard-To-Borrow Stock Model, Guiyuan Ma, Song-Ping Zhu, Wenting Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper studies European call option pricing problem under a hard-to-borrow stock model where stock price and buy-in rate are fully coupled. Avellaneda and Lipkin (2009) proposed a simplified solution approach with an independence assumption, and then derived a semi-explicit pricing formula. However, such an approach has limited its application to more general cases. In this paper, we propose a partial differential equation (PDE) approach for pricing European call options, regardless of the independence assumption. A two-dimensional PDE is derived first with a set of appropriate boundary conditions. Then, two numerical schemes are provided with different treatments of the jump …

High-Throughput Production Of Uniformly Sized Liquid Metal Microdroplets Using Submerged Electrodispersion, Yuxin Zhang, Shiyang Tang, Qianbin Zhao, Guolin Yun, Dan Yuan, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Microdroplets of gallium-based liquid metal alloys have enabled various applications in the fields of biomedicine, electronics, and chemistry. However, due to the high surface tension of liquid metal, high-throughput production of uniformly sized liquid metal microdroplets is challenging using conventional acoustic or microfluidic methods. Here, adapting the submerged electrodispersion technique that has conventionally been used for generating water-based microdroplets, we develop a simple and straightforward platform for the high-throughput production of near-monodisperse (coefficient of variation less than 5%) liquid metal microdroplets in oil without using microfluidic devices. We demonstrate the capabilities of this method for producing liquid metal microdroplets (diameters …
