Dissipation-free MgB2 superconducting wires are valuable in terms of practical applications. Herein, we have found a strong correlation between critical current density (J c ) and the n-value extracted from the electric field versus current density characteristic. The power-law relationship (m) between the J c and the n-value, n∝Jmc , represents a critical index which is strongly dependent on operating temperatures.

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent Aug 2014

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Doctoral Dissertations

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …

Vehicle Multi-Pass Rut Volume And Mobility Power Study, William W. Barbour Jun 2014

Vehicle Multi-Pass Rut Volume And Mobility Power Study, William W. Barbour

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This paper presents the relationship between applied power by a wheeled vehicle to soil and the rutting effects. Specifically, a strong positive relationship was found between cumulative applied power and total rut volume across multiple passes by the vehicle over the same tracks. Field-testing was conducted using a high-mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) and two distinct soil types. Sensors on the vehicle measured torque and angular velocity of each of the four wheels, from which applied power was calculated. A rut profile meter was used to document the shape of the rut after set numbers of passes and this profile …

Piezoelectric Powered Led Street Reflector, Collin Shane Douglass Jun 2014

Piezoelectric Powered Led Street Reflector, Collin Shane Douglass

Electrical Engineering

In many areas of Washington, it rains for a majority of the year. During rainy weather it becomes difficult to see street lanes and dividers, causing hazardous road conditions. The Piezoelectric Powered LED Street Reflector solves this problem. The PPL Street Reflector modifies a street reflector with LED lights. These lights help drivers clearly see where dividers and street lines are in non-ideal weather conditions, such as rain, fog, and snow. The PPL Street Reflector capabilities include harvesting energy through the Piezoelectric Effect, creating a self-sustaining device with minimal maintenance.

Power Side-Channel Dac Implementations For Xilinx Fpgas, Daniel Chase Savory Apr 2014

Power Side-Channel Dac Implementations For Xilinx Fpgas, Daniel Chase Savory

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a novel power side-channel DAC (PS-DAC) which is constructed from user-controllable short circuits in FPGAs and which manipulate overall system power through dynamic power dissipation. Alternately, similar PS-DACs are created using shift-register primitives(SRL16E) which manipulate system power through switching logic, for means of comparison with short-circuit-based PS-DACs. PS-DACs are created of various sizes using both short-circuit-based and shift-register-based methods. These PS-DACs are characterized in terms of output linearity, monotonicity, and frequency distortion. Applications explored in this thesis which use PS-DAC technology include a Simple Power Analysis (SPA) side-channel transmitter, and a frequency watermarking application. These applications serve as …

Suboptimal Mppt Control For Power Management In Pv-Diesel Remote Area Power Supply Systems, Yingjie Tan, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is commonly being used in solar-photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to maximise solar energy extraction. In this paper it is proposed to operate the solar-PV system at the suboptimal MPPT to manage power balance in a remote area power supply (RAPS) system. This is performed based on three different operating modes: 1) Frequency control mode; 2) Active power control mode; 3) MPPT control mode. The operating modes are decided based on the load level and the operating mode of the diesel generator (i.e. synchronous condenser mode or generator mode). This power management strategy balances the …

In this paper, a noniterative analytical method is proposed for estimating the peak load carrying capability (PLCC) and ELCC of conventional and renewable generation units. The proposed method is verified using the IEEE RTS and an electricity network in New South Wales, Australia, and the results are compared with other estimation methods. The results show …

Assessing Network Compliance For Power Quality Performance, Sean Elphick, Victor Gosbell, Victor Smith, Gerrard Drury, Robert Barr Jan 2014

Assessing Network Compliance For Power Quality Performance, Sean Elphick, Victor Gosbell, Victor Smith, Gerrard Drury, Robert Barr

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

IEC standards suggest that a network is compliant if 95% of the sites are compliant. In many cases it is only practical to measure the PQ parameters of some of the sites in a network and to use statistical analysis. The paper examines the minimum number of monitored sites needed to demonstrate compliance with a prescribed degree of confidence - e.g. at the 95% confidence level. Analysis is made of samples extracted randomly from sites included in the Australian Long Term National PQ Survey. The required number of sites is found to vary with the PQ disturbance of concern and …

Energy-Efficiency Analysis Of Per-Subcarrier Antenna Selection With Peak-Power Reduction In Mimo-Ofdm Wireless Systems, Ngoc Phuc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of per-subcarrier antenna subset selection in OFDM wireless systems offers higher system capacity and/or improved link reliability. However, the implementation of the conventional per-subcarrier selection schememay result in significant fluctuations of the average power and peak power across antennas, which affects the potential benefits of the system. In this paper, power efficiency of high-power amplifiers and energy efficiency in per-subcarrier antenna selection MIMO-OFDM systems are investigated. To deliver the maximum overall power efficiency, we propose a two-step strategy for data-subcarrier allocation. This strategy consists of an equal allocation of data subcarriers based on linear optimization and peak-power reduction via cross-antenna …

Power Allocation Algorithm In Ofdm-Based Cognitive Radio Systems, Van Vinh Nguyen, Yang Shouyi, Le Chung Tran

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems, the optimized algorithms for sub-carrier power allocation face the problems of complex iterative calculation and difficult realization. In this paper, we propose an exponential power distribution function and derive a sub-optimal power allocation algorithm. This algorithm aims to allocate power of in-band subcarriers of cognitive users according to the numerical characteristics of the power distribution function by using a convex optimization numerical method under linear constraints. This algorithm has the advantages of fast calculation speed and easy realization, and reduces the interference to the authorized users, which is caused by …

Transmit Antenna Subset Selection For High-Rate Mimo-Ofdm Systems In The Presence Of Nonlinear Power Amplifiers, Phuc Ngoc Le, Farzad Safaei, Le Chung Tran

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The deployment of antenna subset selection on a per-subcarrier basis in MIMO-OFDM systems could improve the system performance and/or increase data rates. This paper investigates this technique for the MIMO-OFDM systems suffering nonlinear distortions due to high-power amplifiers. At first, some problems pertaining to the implementation of this antenna selection approach, including power imbalance across transmit antennas and non-causality of per-subcarrier antenna selection criteria, are identified. Next, an optimal selection scheme is devised by means of linear optimization to overcome those disadvantages. This scheme optimally allocates data subcarriers under a constraint that all antennas have the same number of data …

Dispatch Strategy To Minimise Uncertainty In Wind Power Generation In The Australian National Electricity Market, Amila Wickramasinghe, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

2014 ACPE. With increased penetration of wind power, scheduling generators to meet the forecast demand of a power system is becoming an increasingly challenging task for the system operators. Uncertainty associated with the generation expected from wind plants adds to the load demand uncertainty, making it necessary to retain additional reserves to maintain the balance between demand and supply of power. In the Australian national electricity market (NEM), sophisticated wind forecasting techniques are employed to reduce the uncertainty in wind generation. Despite being able to project the contribution of wind power to a reasonable accuracy, wind power plants are currently …

The human race’s dependence on fossil fuels for energy generation has started to cause major changes in the environment. Climate change is a universal issue and it is evident that our current energy schematic is not sustainable. At the University of Massachusetts, small-scale wind power has the potential to be a key component in UMass’ energy portfolio as the university shifts from reliance on fossil fuels to renewable energy. Strategically placed turbines would produce clean, renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help to decentralize energy dependence on the Central Heating Plant. Small-scale turbines, like the eddyGT, are tested technologies …
