Thermal And Electrical Behaviors Of Selected Geomaterials, Joon Kyu Lee Aug 2012

Thermal And Electrical Behaviors Of Selected Geomaterials, Joon Kyu Lee

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Geomaterials can be often classified into two groups: virgin geomaterials such as soil and rock, and by-product materials such as mine tailings, coal fly/bottom ash, foundry sand, kiln dust, blast furnace/steel slag, reclaimed concrete and asphalt. Studies on these materials and their mixtures have been carried out extensively for geoengineering applications, including the characterization of mechanical properties such as the strength, compressibility, compactivity and permeability, as well as mineralogical and geochemical properties. The goal of this study is to investigate the thermal and electrical properties of selected geomaterials and their mixtures for enhancement of knowledge and engineering applications. The thesis …

Statistical Analysis Of A Vehicle Miles Travled Fee For Nevada, Andrew Nordland Aug 2012

Statistical Analysis Of A Vehicle Miles Travled Fee For Nevada, Andrew Nordland

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Increases in the number of electric, hybrid-electric, and other alternative fuel vehicles, combined with increasing vehicle fuel efficiency present problems with the ability of the fuel tax to collect sufficient revenue. A Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Fee is being considered as an option to replace the existing fuel tax for the collection of revenue for road maintenance, reconstruction and expansion. This study provides an analysis about costs, preference of a potential billing cycle, level of comfort with a mileage collection device, potential changes in transit use, and the effectiveness of a VMT Fee for Nevada. Multinomial logit models are developed …

Generation, Mechanical And Statistical Analysis, And Fem Simulation Of Fracture Of Repeatable Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina Apr 2012

Generation, Mechanical And Statistical Analysis, And Fem Simulation Of Fracture Of Repeatable Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina

Theses and Dissertations

Natural weathering and wear of structural materials in service nearly always generate surface roughness, and follow the Central Limit Theorem prediction for surface topology. This study couples experimental and statistical theory, and FEM to extend knowledge of life of materials from initial service surface conditions through surface damage accumulation. Statistical moments and other parameters were correlated with fracture locations probability (H/N), versus auto correlation length, and depth. As the surface grows to a full Gaussian, H/N increases its dependence on profile’s Average and RMS Roughness, and derived parameters. This dependence shows an asymptotic limit behavior that approaches agreeably Griffith’s crack …

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark Mar 2012

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark

Darcy M Bullock

Many agencies nationwide have adopted video vehicle detection technology as an alternative to inductive loops. While many product evaluations have been performed, the majority of these evaluations have concentrated on freeway applications where speed and volume were the primary evaluation criteria. At an actuated intersection, the metrics of speed and volume do not necessarily represent how well a device will operate as a presence detector. Video detection was evaluated at two signalized intersections in West Lafayette, Indiana and Noblesville, Indiana. A camera on each approach was located at the vendor recommended position, at a height of 40 feet and offset …

Impact Of Camera And Lighting Position On Video Detection Precision, Avery Rhodes, Kristofer Jennings, Darcy Bullock Mar 2012

Impact Of Camera And Lighting Position On Video Detection Precision, Avery Rhodes, Kristofer Jennings, Darcy Bullock

Darcy M Bullock

On well-illuminated approaches, vehicle headlight reflections on the pavement were observed to cause video detection units to activate early. This early activation results in a dramatic increase in the length of the effective vehicle detection zone. This observed variation in the effective length of the vehicle detection zone that varies by ambient lighting condition and camera placement presents a very serious impediment for traffic engineers to design vehicle extension intervals that operate correctly during day, night and transition periods. Furthermore, the stochastic variation in the length of the vehicle detection zone length has the potential to create driver expectancy issues. …

Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang Feb 2012

Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Two features required for modeling high-frequency acoustic scattering from seafloor are roughness and discrete objects distributed on the seafloor. A laser scanner was deployed to acquire fine-scale bottom roughness off the coast of New Jersey in 2006. On the bathymetry map, it was found that the sites were covered by shell fragments. Cross-comparison between the laser reflection intensity and the bathymetry suggests that the shell fragments have a stronger reflection intensity than the seafloor. This phenomenon was confirmed by an indoor experiment on a simulated seafloor. An intensity-based algorithm was developed to detect shell fragments on the seafloor. The field …

A Web-Based Learning Support To Improve Students' Learning Of Statistics, Norhayati Baharun, Anne L. Porter Jan 2012

A Web-Based Learning Support To Improve Students' Learning Of Statistics, Norhayati Baharun, Anne L. Porter

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study investigating the impact of a web-based learning supports particularly a Headstart program on student outcomes in statistics at the University of Wollongong. Unlike in 2010, a Headstart program was introduced to the undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory statistics subject in 2011. This program allowed students to access the first module of work which includes a set of five lecture notes, video clips, and the first assessment via the subject e-learning site approximately four weeks prior to the start of the formal session. For the assessment, the students were required to complete a draft and redraft the first …

Kentucky Traffic Collision Facts 2012 Report, Kentucky Transportation Center, Kentucky State Police Jan 2012

Kentucky Traffic Collision Facts 2012 Report, Kentucky Transportation Center, Kentucky State Police

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

KENTUCKY’S TRAFFIC COLLISION FACTS report for 2012 is based on collision reports submitted to the Kentucky State Police Records Branch. As required by Kentucky Revised Statutes 189.635, “every law enforcement agency whose officers investigate a vehicle accident of which a report must be made...shall file a report of the accident...within ten days after investigation of the accident upon forms supplied by the bureau.” The stated purpose of this requirement is to utilize data on traffic collisions for such purposes as will improve the traffic safety program in the Commonwealth. Data contained in this report are based solely on the observations …
