Mechanical Performance Of Ppy Helix Tube Microactuator, Mehrdad Bahrami Samani, Geoffrey Spinks, Christopher Cook

Christopher Cook

Conducting polymer actuators with favourable properties such as linearity, high power density and compliance are of increasing demand in micro applications. These materials generate forces over two times larger than produced by mammalian skeletal muscles. They operate to convert electro chemical energy to mechanical stress and strain. On the other hand, the application of conducting polymers is limited by the lack of a full description of the relation between four essential parameters: stress, strain, voltage and current. In this paper, polypyrrole helix tube micro actuator mechanical characteristics are investigated. The electrolyte is propylene carbonate and the dopant is TBA. PF6. …

In the present study, two powders near-β Ti alloys having a nominal composition of Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-XCr-1Fe (X = 1–2, wt%) were studied. The alloys were produced via the blended elemental powder metallurgy technique using hydrogenated Ti powder. Microstructure evolution and the distribution of the alloying elements between the phases were investigated after each step of thermo-mechanical processing (TMP). Microstructures were refined through the TMP in both alloys. Porosity was reduced with deformation at 1173 K (900 °C) in the β phase field. The β → α phase transformation occurred during soaking at 1023 K (750 °C) in the α + β …

Generation, Mechanical And Statistical Analysis, And Fem Simulation Of Fracture Of Repeatable Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina Apr 2012

Generation, Mechanical And Statistical Analysis, And Fem Simulation Of Fracture Of Repeatable Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina

Theses and Dissertations

Natural weathering and wear of structural materials in service nearly always generate surface roughness, and follow the Central Limit Theorem prediction for surface topology. This study couples experimental and statistical theory, and FEM to extend knowledge of life of materials from initial service surface conditions through surface damage accumulation. Statistical moments and other parameters were correlated with fracture locations probability (H/N), versus auto correlation length, and depth. As the surface grows to a full Gaussian, H/N increases its dependence on profile’s Average and RMS Roughness, and derived parameters. This dependence shows an asymptotic limit behavior that approaches agreeably Griffith’s crack …

Fluoride And Mineralized Tissues, Debbie Chachra, Anya Vieira, Marc Grynpas Feb 2012

Fluoride And Mineralized Tissues, Debbie Chachra, Anya Vieira, Marc Grynpas

Debbie Chachra

This review focuses on the interaction of fluoride with the material properties of bone and teeth, which is of clinical, scientific, and public health interest. These tissues are composed primarily of collagen (protein) and hydroxyapatite (mineral), and their mechanical function depends on the properties of the constituents, their proportions, the interface, and the three-dimensional structure. Changing any of these may have clinical consequences. Fluoride interacts with mineralized tissues in a number of ways. At low doses, the fluoride may be passively incorporated into the mineral, stabilizing it against dissolution; this is one of the mechanisms by which municipally fluoridated water …

Mechanical joints are inherently vulnerable to failure because the presence of the joint hole causes a stress concentration in the vicinity of the hole. The need for improvement of material strength around a fastener hole can be satisfied by severe plastic deformation (SPD) to produce ultrafine grains. The ultrafine grained (UFG) alloys produced by SPD processing possess higher strengths than their coarse-grained counterparts as a result of the reduced grain size. However, in some circumstances such as SPD processing of Al-Zn and Al-Mg alloys the decomposition of supersaturated solid solutions competes with the Hall-Petch effect and leads to a more …

The gaseous hydriding-induced evolutions of the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) were assessed. Much δ-ZrH1.66 precipitation at 15 atm (21%) incurred significant hardening of vacuum-annealed HPT samples, and pure ε-ZrH2 obtained at 20 atm showed a superior microhardness of 470 HV0.3 and a low fracture toughness of 0.63 MPa m1/2. The δ-hydrides presented strong (1 1 1) texture and followed the (0 0 0 1)α-Zr//{1 1 1}δ-ZrH1.66 orientation relationship with the α-Zr matrix. During hydriding, α-Zr recrystallization texture was developed from the initial deformation texture.

Effect Of Annealing On The Microstructure, Texture And Mechanical Properties Of Severely Deformed Interstitial Free Steel, Sujoy S. Hazra, Azdiar A. Gazder, E V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Ti-stabilised interstitial free (IF) steel initially subjected to 8 passes, route BC equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was further cold rolled (CR) at room temperature to 95% thickness reduction. Both samples were isothermally annealed at 710 °C following which their microstructures and micro-textures were compared via electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties first obtained by shear punch testing (SPT) were later corroborated by uniaxial tensile tests. In the case of the ECAP material, continuous recrystallisation is followed by abnormal growth at prolonged annealing times with minor increases in high angle boundary (HAGB) fraction. On the other hand, the …

Strain-Induced Phase Transformation During Thermo-Mechanical Processing Of Titanium Alloys, A Dehghan-Manshadi, Rian J. Dippenaar Jan 2012

Strain-Induced Phase Transformation During Thermo-Mechanical Processing Of Titanium Alloys, A Dehghan-Manshadi, Rian J. Dippenaar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Strain-induced phase transformation studies have been conducted in a Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo alloy. This alloy was subjected to b sub-transus deformation upon slow cooling from the b-phase field and the effect of strain on the extent and morphology of the phase transformation during hot-deformation was determined. In addition, the transformation kinetics and the morphology of the newly formed a-phase were studied following deformation under different cooling conditions. By applying strain, the rate of the b-to-a phase transformation increased significantly during deformation as well as during slow cooling following deformation. This increase in the kinetics of the b-to-a transformation can be ascribed to …

Thermal, Microstructural And Mechanical Coupling Analysis Model For Flatness Change Prediction During Run-Out Table Cooling In Hot Strip Rolling, Xiao-Dong Wang, Fei Li, Zheng-Yi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Non-uniformity of temperature distribution across strip width direction is the ultimate reason why the flatness defect occurs on the strip after cooling process although the strip is flat at the exit of finishing mill. One thermal, microstructural and mechanical coupling analysis model for predicting flatness change of steel strip during the run-out table cooling process was established using ABAQUS finite element software. K Esaka phase transformation kinetics model was employed to calculate the phase transformation, and coupled with temperature calculation using the user subroutine program HETVAL. Elasto-plasticity constitutive equations of steel material, in which conventional elastic and plastic strains, thermal …
