The wake of a freely flying European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was measured using high speed, time-resolved, particle image velocimetry, simultaneously with high speed cameras which imaged the bird. These measurements have been used to generate vector maps in the near wake that can be associated with the bird’s location and wing configuration. A kinematic analysis has been performed on select sequences of measurements to characterize the motion of the bird, as well as provide a point of comparison between the bird of the present study and other birds or flapping wings. Evaluation of drag coefficient often requires wind tunnel experiments and can be prohibitively expensive if not impossible for large objects or systems. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) aerodynamic analysis offers an alternative approach and can be used as a very effective design tool in many industries: automotive, aerospace, marine, etc. The main objective of this research is to investigate feasibility of using non-contact digitizers for developing finite element models of large objects for subsequent CFD analysis. An analysis of a newly proposed wind power extraction device called a wing oscillator was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A wing oscillator is a device that consists of two airfoils attached to a central pivot by means of a frame or shaft. Oscillatory motion is produced by controlling the angle of attack of the airfoils as a fluid flow is passed over the device. A robust mathematical scheme was developed to investigate the performance of the wing oscillator and was hooked to the CFD software package FLUENT through User Defined Functions (UDFs). There is no cost effective way to deliver a payload to space and, with rising fuel prices, currently the price to travel commercially is also becoming more prohibitive to the public. During supersonic flight, compressive shock waves form around the craft which could be harnessed to deliver an additional lift on the craft. Using a series of hanging plates below a lifting wing design, the total lift generated can be increased above conventional values, while still maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. The effects of an industrial gas turbine’s Exhaust Collector Box (ECB) geometry on static pressure recovery and total pressure loss were investigated in this study experimentally and computationally. This study aims to further understand how exit boundary conditions affect the performance of a diffuser system as well as the accuracy of industry standard computational models. A design of experiments approach was taken using a Box-Behnken design method for investigating three geometric parameters of the ECB.
