Material Behavior Characterization Of A Thin Film Polymer Used In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Michael James Martinsen Dec 2012

Material Behavior Characterization Of A Thin Film Polymer Used In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Michael James Martinsen

Theses and Dissertations

The use of lithium-ion batteries in the automotive industry has become increasingly popular. As more hybrid and electric vehicles take to the road an understanding of how these batteries will behave structurally will be of greater concern. Impact testing can give a valuable overview of the strengths and weaknesses of a battery's design, however, these tests can be time consuming, expensive, and dangerous. Finite element analysis can deliver a reliable low cost approximation of physical testing results. The accuracy of FE results depends greatly on the mathematical representation of the material properties of Li-ion battery components. In this study, the …

Analysis Of Multi-Directional Recycled Jute Fiber Composite Behavior Using Experimental, Numerical, And Analytical Methods, Patrick Severson Dec 2012

Analysis Of Multi-Directional Recycled Jute Fiber Composite Behavior Using Experimental, Numerical, And Analytical Methods, Patrick Severson

Theses and Dissertations

Composite materials are increasing in popularity as a material of choice in many engineering applications. Major industries using composites include automotive, construction, and sports equipment. Most of the knowledge, research, and technology that will help decrease the cost of composite materials have been aimed at developing synthetic fibers as the reinforcing constituent.

This thesis characterizes jute fibers obtained as a byproduct from the coffee industry to determine if they can be viable in composite manufacturing. Experimental analysis, finite element analysis, and analytical modeling are used to characterize jute fiber based composites. Experimental analysis consists of jute fiber bundle tensile testing …

Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Ultra-High Strength Steel, Trent J. Hartman Aug 2012

Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Ultra-High Strength Steel, Trent J. Hartman

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is quickly becoming a method of interest for welding of high strength steel (HSS) and ultra high strength steel (UHSS). FSSW has been shown to produce high quality welds in these materials, without the drawbacks associated with fusion welding. Tool grade for polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools has a significant impact on wear resistance, weld quality, and tool failure in FSSW of DP 980 steel sheet. More specifically, for a nominal composition of 90% CBN, the grain size has a significant impact on the wear resistance of the tool. A-type tools performed the best, …

Design, Fabrication And Testing Of Tunable Rf Meta-Atoms, Derrick Langley Jun 2012

Design, Fabrication And Testing Of Tunable Rf Meta-Atoms, Derrick Langley

Theses and Dissertations

Metamaterials are engineered structures designed to alter the propagation of electromagnetic waves incident upon the structure. The focus of this research was the effect of metamaterials on electromagnetic signals at radio frequencies. RF meta-atoms were investigated to further develop the theory, modeling, design and fabrication of metamaterials. Comparing the analytic modeling and experimental testing, the results provide a deeper understanding into metamaterials which could lead to applications for beam steering, invisibility cloaking, negative refraction, super lenses, and hyper lenses. RF meta-atoms integrated with microelectromechanical systems produce tunable meta-atoms in the 10 - 15 GHz and 1 - 4 GHz frequency …

A High Bandwidth Non-Destructive Method For Characterizing Simple Media, Matthew L. Szuster Mar 2012

A High Bandwidth Non-Destructive Method For Characterizing Simple Media, Matthew L. Szuster

Theses and Dissertations

The relative complex permittivity can be extracted with time domain data from a perfect electrical conductor (PEC) backed sample of a low-loss, non-dispersive dielectric using dual ridged waveguide aperture probes with attached PEC flange plates of the same geometry and different dimensions. The temporal domain measurement of interest is the ability to detect the reflection from the edge of the flange plate in the parallel region created by the flange plate and the PEC backing on the dielectric sample. Signal processing windows are applied to the data in order to exploit this edge reflection. The types of signal processing methods …

Silicon Carbide Capacitive High Temperature Mems Strain Transducer, Richard P. Weisenberger Mar 2012

Silicon Carbide Capacitive High Temperature Mems Strain Transducer, Richard P. Weisenberger

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force Research Lab Air Vehicles directorate performs research on hypersonic vehicles. To verify materials or designs of hypersonic vehicles, they have a need to measure strain at temperatures exceeding 700°C. Strain sensors have the ability to measure strain. Strain is the deformation of materials due to internal stresses in a material. Internal stresses occur when a material is subjected to a force. Traditional strain sensors use Piezoresistive effects to measure strain, which is temperature dependent and making them unusable at high temperatures. This paper discusses a novel strain sensing device, sensing capacitance instead of piezoresistance. The strain sensor is …

High Speed Friction Stir Spot Welding On Dp 980 Steel:Joint Properties And Tool Wear, Nathan David Saunders Mar 2012

High Speed Friction Stir Spot Welding On Dp 980 Steel:Joint Properties And Tool Wear, Nathan David Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

With the desire to improve passenger safety and fuel efficiency, Ultra High Strength Steels (UHSS) have been developed for use in the automotive industry. UHSS are high strength steels with high ductility and strength. DP 980 is one of these UHSS being applied in automobile manufacturing. DP 980 is difficult to join with Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) because of the high carbon content and alloying in this material. The weld becomes brittle when it solidifies during the welding process. With the desire and motivation of widely using UHSS, new welding processes are needed to be developed in order to effectively …
