Evolutionary Algorithm For Water Storage Forecasting Response To Climate Change With Small Data Sets: The Wolonghu Wetland, China, Qingwei Ni, Li Wang, Binghui Zheng, Muttucumaru Sivakumar

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

"A novel genetic programming (GP) technique, a new method of evolutionary algorithms, was applied to a small data set to predict the water storage of Wolonghu wetland in response to the climate change in the northeastern part of China. Fourteen years (1993-2006) of annual water storage and climatic data of the wetland were used for model training and testing. Results of simulations and predictions illustrate a good fit between calculated water storage and observed values (mean absolute percent error = 9.47, r = 0.99). By comparison, a multilayer perceptron method (a popular artificial neural network model) and Grey theory model …

Application Of Main Flow Data In The Determination Of Boundary Shear Stress In Smooth Closed Ducts, Yu Han, Shu-Qing Yang, Nadeesha Dharmasiri

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Boundary shear stress plays an important role in momentum and mass transfers, but it is very difficult to determine experimentally. This paper develops a new method which can evaluate the boundary shear stress using the main flow data based on Momentum Balance Method (MBM). A theoretical relationship between the boundary shear stress and parameters of main flow region is established. The obtained results from MBM agree well with other methods, indicating that the new method is reasonable and reliable. The significant contribution of MBM is that the local boundary shear stress accurately and quickly can be determined by application of …

Double Space-Time Transmit Diversity For Very High Data Rate Mb-Ofdm Uwb Systems, Ngoc P. Le, Le C. Tran, Farzad Safaei Jan 2012

Double Space-Time Transmit Diversity For Very High Data Rate Mb-Ofdm Uwb Systems, Ngoc P. Le, Le C. Tran, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we investigate a multiband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) system with very high data rates (VHDR) of several gigabits per second (Gbps). We propose a DSTTD-based VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system by incorporating a double space-time transmit diversity (DSTTD) scheme into the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system. At the receiver, an efficient soft-demapper that takes into consideration the noise enhancement due to a zero-forcing equalization is developed. Numerical simulations of the proposed system at a very high data rate of 2.Gbps over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel models are implemented. The simulation results show that this system could achieve …

Underground Coal Mine Delay Data Analysis System, Ernest Y. Baafi, Ian Porter Jan 2012

Underground Coal Mine Delay Data Analysis System, Ernest Y. Baafi, Ian Porter

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Due to the high levels of uncertainty in underground coal mining operations, delays occur regularly which inadvertently reduce the utilisation of mining equipment. In most coal mines delay data is primarily sourced from shift reports, machine monitoring and production systems. The recording process is initiated commonly at the end of a shift to ensure the correct information is recorded for the managerial decision process. An issue that the Australian coal industry faces is the lack of a standardised delay recording process and delay classification system. Tools used within the industry to analyse delay data are mostly mine specific and offer …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In recent years there have been some significant research towards the ability of processing related data, particularly the relatedness among atomic elements in a structure with those in another structure. A number of approaches have been developed with various degrees of success. This chapter provides an overview of machine learning approaches for the encoding of related atomic elements in one structure with those in other structures. The chapter briefly reviews a number of unsupervised approaches for such data structures which can be used for solving generic classification, regression, and clustering problems. We will apply this approach to a particularly interesting …

Analysis Of Voltage Quality Data From Smart Meters, P K. C Wong, R A. Barr, A Kalam

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Initial analysis of voltage quality information collected from smart meters at premise level is presented. The information reveals instances of over and under voltage at some consumer premises. This revelation means supply authorities now have an obligation to rectify their supply voltages in accordance with codes and regulations. The analysis provides the foundation for future research work to identify effective solutions to the observed over and under voltage problems in the supply network. © 2012 Institut Teknologi Sepulul.

The Algorithm Of Equal Acceptance Region For Detecting Copy Number Alterations: Applications To Next-Generation Sequencing Data, Yan-Xia Lin Jan 2012

The Algorithm Of Equal Acceptance Region For Detecting Copy Number Alterations: Applications To Next-Generation Sequencing Data, Yan-Xia Lin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The information of copy number alterations (gains and losses) in tumour genomes can be used to discovery cancer-causing genes. The estimate of copy number can be obtained from the estimate copy number ratio. The higher the depth of underlying sequencing data, the more accurate the estimate of copy number ratio. At the same time, the higher depth of a sequencing data used in copy number analysis, the more cost of data analysis. To develop a method for identifying a necessary depth of sequencing data for copy number analysis before test data are produced is of interest. In this paper, we …

Very High Data Rate Mb-Ofdm Uwb Systems With Transmit Diversity Techniques, Ngoc Phuc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, the application of space time block codes in a very high data rate multiband-OFDM ultra-wideband (VHDR MB-OFDM UWB) system, where the Modified Dual Carrier Modulation (MDCM) scheme and Low Density Parity Check codes are deployed, is investigated. First, we present a new table-based mapping approach and derive soft-demapping expressions for the MDCM scheme. We then propose a space-time-frequency coded VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system by incorporating space time block codes into the conventional VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system. Numerical simulations of the system supporting a data rate of 1Gbps over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel models are implemented. The simulation …

Estimation Of Regression Parameters From Noise Multiplied Data, Yan-Xia Lin, Phillip Wise Jan 2012

Estimation Of Regression Parameters From Noise Multiplied Data, Yan-Xia Lin, Phillip Wise

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper considers the scenario that all data entries in a confidentialised unit record file were masked by multiplicative noises, regardless of whether unit records are sensitive or not and regardless of whether the masked variables are dependent or independent variables in the underlying regression analysis. A technique is introduced in this paper to show how to estimate parameters in a regression model, which is originally fitted by unmasked data, based on masked data. Several simulation studies and a real-life data application are presented.

Small Area Estimation In Practice An Applocation To Agricultural Business Survey Data, Nikos Tzavidis, Raymond L. Chambers, Nicola Salvati, Hukum Chandra

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes an application of small area estimation (SAbl to agricultural business survey data. Both well known small area estimators, such as the empirical best linear unbiased predictor (EBLUP), and more recently proposed small area estimators, for example, tile M-quanlile, the robust EBLUP aml!he Model Ansed Direct estimators arc considered. Mean squared error estimation is discussed. Using a real agricultural business survey dataset, we place emphasis on model diagnostics for specifying the small area working model, on diagnostic measures for validating the reliability of direct and indirect (modelbased) small area e.~timators i1nd on providing practical guidelines to the prospective …

Robust Sampled-Data Control Of Structures Subject To Parameter Uncertainties And Actuator Saturation, Haiping Du, Nong Zhang, Bijan Samali, Fazel Naghdy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

"This paper presents a robust sampled-data controller design approach for vibration attenuation of civil structures considering parameter uncertainties and actuator saturation. The parameter uncertainties belong to polytopic form and are assumed to be the variations of the structural stiffness and damping. Regarding the uncertain sampling problem encountered in real world applications, the sampling period designed for the controller is allowed to be variable within a given bound. In order to obtain reduced peak response quantities, the energy-to-peak performance used to describe the peak values of the control output under all possible energy-bounded disturbances is optimised. The robust sampled-data state feedback …
