Synthesis Of Mn3o4-Encapsulated Graphene Sheet Nanocomposites Via A Facile, Fast Microwave Hydrothermal Method And Their Supercapacitive Behaviour, Li Li, Kuok Hau Seng, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Ivan P. Nevirkovets, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Well-crystallized Mn3O4-anchored reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized via a facile, effective, energy-saving, and scalable microwave hydrothermal technique for potential application as supercapacitor material. Integrating these nanostructures resulted in a strong synergistic effect between the two materials, consequently leading to a hybrid composite with higher specific capacitance compared to the bare Mn3O4 nanoparticles. The results from different sorts of characterization indicate that the Mn3O4 particles were deposited and anchored on graphene sheets. The capacitance value of the rGO(31.6%)–Mn3O4 nanocomposite reached 153 F/g, much higher than that of the bare Mn3O4 (87 F/g) at a scan rate of …

In Vitro Studying Corrosion Behaviour Of Biocorrodible Mg Alloys, Sina S. Jamali, Simon Moulton, Maria Forsyth, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The idea of bioabsorbable/biocorrodible stents has gained increasing attention in the last decade. Permanent coronary stents, traditionally made from 316L grade stainless steel, are routinely used for the treatment of blocked arteries. However, these stents can cause complications such as restenosis, thrombosis and the need for the patient to undergo prolonged antiplatelet therapy. Biodegradable metal stents provide an opportunity for the stent to remain in place for a period to ensure restoration of function and then degrade through a carefully controlled bio-corrosion process. Among the number of potentially suitable materials, Magnesium alloys have shown great promise as a stent material …

High Strength Thin-Walled Rectangular Concrete-Filled Tubular Slender Beam-Columns, Part Ii: Behaviour, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Qing Quan Liang, Vipulkumar I. Patel

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Experimental and numerical research on full-scale high strength thin-walled rectangular steel slender tubes filled with high strength concrete has not been reported in the literature. In a companion paper, a new numerical model was presented that simulates the nonlinear inelastic behavior of uniaxially loaded high strength thin-walled rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) slender beam-columns with local buckling effects. The progressive local and post-local buckling of thin steel tube walls under stress gradients was incorporated in the numerical model. This paper presents the verification of the numerical model developed and its applications to the investigation into the fundamental behavior of high …

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is an excellent material to strengthen existing structures. However, the confinement efficiency of FRP-confined square columns is relatively low compared to circular columns due to stress concentration at the sharp corners. This paper presents a new technique aimed to maximise the efficiency of FRP confinement for square concrete columns: circularisation using segmental circular concrete covers. Sixteen square reinforced concrete columns were cast. Four were used as a reference group; four were rounded 20 mm at each corner and wrapped with three layers of CFRP simulating the conventional methods; the rest eight columns were bonded with four …

For the design of civil and mining engineering geo-structures, it is often necessary to investigate the behaviour and the role of discontinuities on the rock mass performance. In many cases, failure is governed by the shear behaviour of discontinuities in excavations. In this context, evaluation of the effects of small repetitive earthquakes on the shear strength parameters of rock joints especially in tunnels and dam foundations is also important. This paper presents the results of a systematic study carried out on the cyclic shear behaviour of artificial rock joints under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions, as many of the previous …

The Effect Of The Strain Rate On Soft Soil Behaviour Under Cyclic Loading, Jing Ni, Buddhima Indraratna, X Y. Geng, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, cyclic triaxial loading tests were conducted on specimens of soft clay with varying cyclic stresses and frequencies to investigate the performance of soft soil subgrade subjected to cyclic loading. The laboratory results indicate that given the same level of cyclic stress, the stability of clay subgrade is primarily dependent on the loading time with no consistent frequency/train speed effect. There exists a critical level of cyclic stress between 60 and 80% of the monotonic shear strength, above which failure may occur regardless of the loading frequency. The nature that soils behave dependently on cyclic stress level rather …

The ballast layer is intended to provide a free draining base and sufficient bearing capacity to maintain a proper track alignment. Due to the growth in commuter and industrial traffic, the railway industry needs to fulfil the demands for faster, heavier, and longer trains. However, these high traffic loads often result in a large plastic deformations and degradation of ballast, which in turn, leads to a significant loss of track stability and high maintenance costs. The deformation and degradation of ballast are influenced by factors such as the amplitude and frequency of loading, the number of load cycles, track confining …

Comparative Behaviour Of Frp Confined Square Concrete Columns Under Eccentric Loading, X Lei, Thong M. Pham, M N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This study evaluates different methods of strengthening existing square concrete columns under eccentric loading. Sixteen reinforced square concrete columns were cast. The columns were made from normal strength concrete and the reinforcement was kept at minimum simulating columns needing retrofitting. Four columns were modified with round comers and wrapped with three layers of CFRP, four were circularised by circular segments and wrapped with three layers of CFRP, and the last four columns were circularised and confined with steel straps. Specimens from each group were tested under concentric, eccentric (15 or 25 mm) and flexural bending. Results from the study showed …

This paper presents a laboratory study of interface behavior between ballast and geogrid under various degree of fouling by coal fines. The stress-displacement behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast with geogrid was investigated through a series of large-scale direct shear tests where the fouling degree varied from 0% to 95% Void Contamination Index (VCI), at normal stresses ranging from 15kPa to 75kPa. The results showed that geogrid enhances the shear strength and increases apparent angle of shearing resistance, while only slightly reduces the vertical displacement of the composite geogrid-ballast system. However, when ballast was contaminated by coal fines, the influences …

Behaviour Of Hybrid Double-Skin Tubular Columns Subjected To Combined Axial Compression And Cyclic Lateral Loading, Bing Zhang, J G. Teng, Tao Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (hybrid DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They consist of an outer tube made of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and an inner tube made of steel, with the space between filled with concrete. In these hybrid DSTCs, the three constituent materials are optimally combined to achieve several advantages not available with existing forms of columns, including their superior corrosion and seismic performance. This paper presents the test results of a series of large-scale hybrid DSTCs subjected to combined axial and cyclic lateral loads, with an emphasis …

The Effect Of Chromium Addition On The Strain Ageing And Recrystallisation Behaviour Of Low Carbon Steel, Elena Pereloma, V Bata, Azdiar A. Gazder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The strain ageing and recrystallisation behaviour of conventional low carbon A06 steel was compared with those containing varying amounts of chromium (0.26, 0.52 and 0.74 wt.%). The results show that the A06 steel undergoes four stages of strain ageing: (i) the pinning by solute atoms of dislocations generated during pre-strain, (ii) the generation of fresh dislocations from grain boundaries, (iii) the onset of precipitation and, (iv) the inhibition of dislocation generation from grain boundaries due to pinning by carbon segregation. On the other hand, the chromium containing steels only exhibit the fIrst three stages of strain ageing. An approximately twofold …

Recrystallisation Behaviour Of Low Carbon Steel With And Without Addition Of Chromium, Azdiar A. Gazder, Vladimir Bata, Sujoy S. Hazra, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The effects of 0.74wt% Cr addition on the recrystallisation kinetics of low carbon (LC) steel was investigated using Vickers hardness testing, optical metallography and Electron Back- Scattering Diffraction (EBSD). Compared to the unalloyed steel, Cr addition significantly delays the time for recrystallisation and increases the JMAK pre-exponential factor (k) by an order of magnitude. During initial softening, EBSD returned similar orientations for nucleated and growing grain fractions in both steels. However with longer annealing times the micro-texture of recrystallised grains differs from their earlier counterparts. Overall, the effect of fine Cr carbides on grain boundary mobility in the LC-Cr steel …

Predication Of The Behaviour Of Bulk Materials In The Design And Operation Of Bulk Handling And Processing Plants, David Hastie, Peter Wypych, Andrew Grima, Richard La Roche, David Curry Jan 2012

Predication Of The Behaviour Of Bulk Materials In The Design And Operation Of Bulk Handling And Processing Plants, David Hastie, Peter Wypych, Andrew Grima, Richard La Roche, David Curry

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It is very dangerous to assume or extrapolate anything when it comes to bulk material properties and behaviour. Traditional methods for flow prediction, such as hand calculation or even just relying on past experience, require assumptions to be made about the bulk material properties and flow. Although these materials may have generic names and possess similar properties (e.g. coal, iron ore), they can all behave quite differently under dynamic conditions. What we end up designing for one part of the plant may be quite different to what is needed in another part of the plant, which may be handling or …

Behaviour Of Frp Confined Concrete Cylinders Under Different Temperature Exposure, Muhammad N. S Hadi, B A. Louk Fanggi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Bridge structures are exposed to the elements with a high variation in temperature. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of different high temperatures on the behaviour of concrete cylinders wrapped with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). Twelve concrete cylinders made of 60 MPa having 100 mm diameter and 200 mm height were cast and tested. The cylinders were divided into four groups: cylinders wrapped with a single CFRP layer, cylinders wrapped with two CFRP layers, cylinders wrapped with a single GFRP layer, and cylinders wrapped with two GFRP layers. Each group was exposed to temperatures of 20°C, …
