The Development Of A Mechatronics And Material Handling Course: Laboratory Experiments And Projects, James Shirley
The Development Of A Mechatronics And Material Handling Course: Laboratory Experiments And Projects, James Shirley
All Theses
Mechatronic systems integrate technologies from a variety of engineering disciplines to create solutions to challenging industrial problems. The material handling industry utilizes mechatronics to move, track, and manipulate items in factories and distribution centers. Material handling systems, because of their use of programmable logic controllers (PLC), PLC networks, industrial robotics, and other mechatronic elements, are a natural choice for a college instructional environment. This thesis offers insight and guidance for mechatronic activities introduced in a laboratory setting. A series of eight laboratory experiments have been created to introduce PLCs, robotics, electric circuits, and data acquisition fundamentals. In-depth case studies synthesize …

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik
Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
In this paper, we present and compare two-stage type-2 fuzzy logic advisor (FLA) for subjective decision making in the domain of students' performance evaluation. We test our proposed model for evaluating students' performance in our computer science and engineering department at HBCC/KFUPM in two domains namely cooperating training and capstone/senior project assessment where we find these FLAs very useful and promising. In our proposed model, the assessment criteria for different components of cooperative training and senior project are transformed into linguistic labels and evaluation information is extracted into the form of IF-THEN rules from the experts. These rules are modeled …
Puerto Rico - Pv Training Program Study - Final Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
Puerto Rico - Pv Training Program Study - Final Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
FSEC Energy Research Center®
This Final Report summarizes the work preformed on the program entitled "Puerto Rico PV Training Program Study" for the period April 14, 2008 to June 30, 2009. The program was a contract effort between Mech-Tech College, Caguas, Puerto Rico and the Florida Solar Energy Center/University of Central Florida, Cocoa, Florida. Mech-Tech College was interested in learning about and applying renewable energy technologies and providing college level courses for the future workforce of a renewable energy industry in Puerto Rico. This report documents the activities of Florida Solar Energy Center to assist Mech-Tech College in the design, development and implementation of …

Transdisciplinary Green Engineering Education At San José State University, Belle Wei, Patricia Backer
Transdisciplinary Green Engineering Education At San José State University, Belle Wei, Patricia Backer

Climate change is a pressing issue for the world today. There are an increasing number of technological by-products posing a threat to the stability and quality of the world environment. According to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global warming appears to be accelerating, resulting in higher increases in global temperature and higher rises in the sea level. To effectively address this problem, there is a need for transdisciplinary, transnational approaches, reflecting the complexity of the problem and the interdependence of people’s lives around the world. Consequently, the Davidson College of Engineering at San José State University …
Universities Changing In Response To A Volatile Environment: A Case Study From Ireland, Kevin Kelly
Universities Changing In Response To A Volatile Environment: A Case Study From Ireland, Kevin Kelly
Books/Book chapters
This paper is a short summary of a research thesis submitted for a doctoral degree in education in late 2008. The substantive issue investigated was the response of a large higher education institute (HEI) in Ireland, the Dublin Institute of Technology and hereafter referred to as the Institute, to the demands for change. The research was undertaken by an experienced academic from inside the organisation. What is happening in this institute may be significant to others because change in higher education is a key debate throughout the world at present. The research study shows that stakeholders in the Institute acknowledge …
Students Views On Engineering Mechanics Education And The Implications For Educators, Thomas Goldfinch, Giles Thomas, Anna L. Carew
Students Views On Engineering Mechanics Education And The Implications For Educators, Thomas Goldfinch, Giles Thomas, Anna L. Carew
Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)
This paper presents findings of a qualitative study conducted as part of a larger project to address the issue of high failure rates in first year engineering mechanics. Engineering student focus groups were held at two institutions, and were asked about the subject area, curriculum, and their approaches to study. Eight academics were also interviewed individually on the same topics to provide some context for the focus group outcomes. Documented responses revealed a tendency for both groups to focus on the most negative or extreme examples as cases which were representative of a wider situation. Although the focus group and …
Rapid Development Of Multimedia Instructional Modules For Information Technology Education, Nanda Ganesan
Rapid Development Of Multimedia Instructional Modules For Information Technology Education, Nanda Ganesan
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
A multifaceted learning model was developed for implementing e-learning in a largely commuter campus. The primary objective of the model was to build a flexible learning environment that combined the learning effectiveness of in-class learning with the flexibility and accessibility of online learning. One of the components of the model was the multimedia instructional modules produced to teach various Information Technology courses. Several different types of modules were produced representing chalk-and-talk type of lectures, PowerPoint presentations and software tutorials. The chalk-and-talk type of lecture modules and the software tutorials that emulated the in-class learning experience contributed positively towards enhancing the …
