High-Resolution Mapping In Manus Basin, C. Roman, V. Ferrini
High-Resolution Mapping In Manus Basin, C. Roman, V. Ferrini
Christopher N. Roman
Near-bottom seafloor mapping with precisely navigated deep submergence vehicles has become increasingly common in a range of oceanographic settings. Recent mapping efforts at deep-water hydrothermal vent sites have resulted in high-resolution (sub-meter) bathymetry datasets that can be used to identify morphological features associated with volcanic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes. The resolution of these maps, and our ability to accurately quantify the complex morphologic details of hydrothermal structures has been limited by a number of variables including navigational accuracy, sonar settings (e.g. acoustic wavelength, sonar orientation, ping rate), survey parameters (e.g. altitude, speed), data density, and data processing techniques (e.g. gridding …

Recent years have seen rapid progress in the development of ontologies as semantic models intended to capture and represent aspects of the real world. There is, however, great variation in the quality of ontologies. If ontologies are to become progressively better in the future, more rigorously developed, and more appropriately compared, then a systematic discipline of ontology evaluation must be created to ensure quality of content and methodology. Systematic methods for ontology evaluation will take into account representation of individual ontologies, performance and accuracy on tasks for which the ontology is designed and used, degree of alignment with other ontologies …

Artificial neural networks trained as intelligent controllers can easily accommodate the non-linearities and time dependencies of non-linear, dynamic systems. However, they require large training time and large number of neurons to deal with complex problems. Taking benefit of the characteristics of a generalized neuron (GN), that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time, a generalized neuron based adaptive power system stabilizer (GNAPSS) is proposed. It consists of a GN as an predictor, that predicts the plant dynamics, and a GN as a controller to damp low frequency oscillations. Results show that the proposed GNAPSS can provide a consistently …

Temporal evolution of the fiber morphology during dry spinning has been investigated in the framework of Cahn-Hilliard equation [J. Chem. Phys.28, 258 (1958)] pertaining to the concentration order parameter or volume fraction given by the Flory-Huggins free energy of mixing [P. J. Flory, Principles of Polymer Chemistry (Cornell University Press, Ithaca, NY, 1953), p. 672] in conjunction with the solventevaporation rate. To guide the solventevaporation induced phase separation, equilibrium phase diagram of the starting polymer solution was established on the basis of the Flory-Huggins free energy of mixing. The quasi-steady-state approximation has been adopted to account for the nonconserved nature …

Both average and maximum concentrations and mass streams in the flue gases and average emission factors were presented …
Tribo-Surface Characteristics Of Al-B4c And Al-Sic Composites Worn Under Different Contact Pressures
Tribo-Surface Characteristics Of Al-B4c And Al-Sic Composites Worn Under Different Contact Pressures
A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb
Tribo-surface characteristics of two aluminium metal matrix composites (Al-MMC) of compositions Al-13 vol%B4C and Al-13 vol%SiC sliding against a commercial phenolic brake pad have been investigated under dry conditions. The wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc type apparatus at a linear speed of 1.62 m s-1 under contact pressures ranging from 0.75 to 3.00 MPa. The coefficient of friction was recorded on line. Wear rates were calculated from mass loss measurements. Scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to examine the tribo-surface. It is found that wear rate of both composites increases with increasing …

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is an IETF open standard to provide directory services in the network. LDAP was initially developed at the University of Michigan with an objective to include most of the features of X.500 directory structure, while eliminating the burdens and difficulties of the same.
As LDAP does not provide any specification on the data storage, different venders can implement different mechanism for data storage as found suitable to the specific vender or environment. Although underlying data storage system between different LDAP servers can differ, this disparity does not affect the functionality or interaction of LDAP clients. …

Precision And Accuracy Of Thermal Calibration Of Atomic Force Microscopy Cantilevers, Nancy Burnham, G Matei, E Thoreson, J Pratt, D Newell
Nancy A. Burnham
To have confidence in force measurements made with atomic force microscopes(AFMs), the spring constant of the AFM cantilevers should be known with good precision and accuracy, a topic not yet thoroughly treated in the literature. In this study, we compared the stiffnesses of uncoated tipless uniform rectangular silicon cantilevers among thermal, loading, and geometric calibration methods; loading was done against an artifact from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The artifact was calibrated at NIST using forces that were traceable to the International System of units. The precision and accuracy of the thermal method were found to be …

The specifications of LDAP v.3 provide facilities for simple authentication using a cleartext password as well as any SASL mechanism.SASL allows for integrity and privacy services to be negotiated (RFC 2251, www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2251.txt). Use of cleartext password is strongly discouraged where the underlying transport service cannot guarantee confidentiality and may result in disclosure of the password to unauthorized parties. The protocol allows other security mechanisms like SASL to be implemented in LDAP. The protocol also permits that the server can return its credentials to the client, if it chooses to do so. This article is a TRIZ based study on patents …

Comparing Linkages Of Real Estate And Construction By The Consideration Of The Impact Of Capital, Yu Song, Chunlu Liu, Craig Langston
Craig Langston
Based on the recently published Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) input-output database at constant prices, this research proposes a new model to compare the linkages of the construction and real estate sectors in national economies with the consideration of the impact of capital. Empirical results indicate that the linkages are extremely underestimated in previous research. The backward and forward linkages of the real estate sector are smaller than those of the construction sector, which means in economic development, construction plays a more important role than real estate, given the impact of capital. More importantly, the findings prove that …

Fabrication Of Pdms (Polydimethylsiloxane) Microlens And Diffuser Using Replica Molding, Fang-Tzu Chuang
Fang-Tzu Chuang
This paper reports the fabrication method of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) microlens array based on the replica molding process, casting a liquid PDMS into concave microlens molds. Concave microlens molds were fabricated through spin-coating processes suspended a liquid PMMA film on the micro-drilled hole, leading to the formation of the special curvature. Then, PDMS microlens arrays and diffusers were fabricated by replica molding and discussed in this study. The fabricated microlenses have both good surface roughness and high-quality optical properties. Therefore, diffusers were fabricated by two-step replica molding. A high-intensity He–Ne laser beam was uniformly spread through diffusers. Experimental tests demonstrated that …

The paper presents the new method for measurements of air particulate size distribution in real time using Kamika Infrared Particulate Sizer type P (IPS-P) with isokinetic air sampler. The device makes it possible to classify (sort) air particulates according to size into 256 granularity classes from about 0.4 µm up to 300 µm. Tests of the IPS-P prototype were conducted in Warsaw at the turn of 2005/2006 and some measurement results were presented in the work.

In this position paper, we briefly describe the perspective of the US National Center for Ontological Research (NCOR, http://ncor.us) on ontology evaluation. NCOR’s inauguration was recently held (October 2005), and at that time goals were identified and committees formed to pursue those goals, including the Ontology Evaluation Committee. This committee is charged with developing a plan for the evaluation of ontologies that is designed to transform ontological engineering into a true scientific and engineering discipline. This paper discusses some issues on ontology evaluation, including the relevant questions to ask, and suggests some approaches.
