Fabrication Of Various Curved Relief Structures Through Concave Surface Forming And Soft Replica Molding, Fang-Tzu Chuang
Fang-Tzu Chuang
In this case, our groups presented various optical structures through the presented method, involving concave surface forming and soft replica molding. The method of concave surface forming is mainly for the fabrication of concave surface. The method of soft replica molding is mainly for the fabrication of replica. Concave and convex relief structures, including circular curved relief structures, convex relief structures with platform structures on the top, refractive beam-shaping elements, these structures with dual curvatures and asymmetric structures, can be easily made through the presented method, respectively. All processes of manufacture are in several simple steps without multistep optical lithography …

Self Consistent Bathymetric Mapping Using Sub-Maps: Survey Results From The Tag Hydrothermal Structure, C. Roman, R. Reves-Sohn, H. Singh, S. Humphris
Christopher N. Roman
The spatial resolution of microbathymetry maps created using robotic vehicles such as ROVs, AUVs and manned submersibles in the deep ocean is currently limited by the accuracy of the vehicle navigation data. Errors in the vehicle position estimate commonly exceed the ranging errors of the acoustic mapping sensor itself, which creates inconsistency in the map making process and produces artifacts that lower resolution and distort map integrity. We present a methodology for producing self-consistent maps and improving vehicle position estimation by exploiting accurate local navigation and utilizing terrain relative measurements. The complete map is broken down into individual "sub-maps'', which …

Broadband Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Spectroscopy Of Nitrogen Using A Picosecond Modeless Dye Laser, Sukesh Roy, Terrence R. Meyer, James R. Gord
Terrence R Meyer
Broadband picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy of nitrogen is demonstrated using 145-ps pump and probe beams and a 115-ps Stokes beam with a spectral bandwidth of 5 nm. This is, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of broadband CARS using subnanosecond lasers. The short temporal envelope of the laser pulses and the broadband spectral nature of the Stokes beam will enable nonresonant-background-free, single-shot, or time-dependent spectroscopy in high-pressure or hydrocarbon-rich environments. Successful correlation of room-temperature broadband picosecond N2 CARS with a theoretical spectrum is presented.

Drag and drop operation is one of the key capabilities of any Graphical User Interface. The user can do quite complex operations simply by visually dragging and dropping objects from one location to another. It saves user from remembering and typing a lot of commands. The result of a drag and drop operation may vary depending the type of source object and type of destination object. For example dragging a file and dropping on a folder may copy or move the file to the destination folder, dropping that file to a remote ftp location may upload that file using internet, …

Research and development has always played a strategically important role in the survival and the growth of technology-based firms. R&D is positively linked to company performance measures such as sales, productivity and shareholder returns and in addition to this, facing increased competition, as a result of globalization the viability of many established firms is based on the efficiency of their R&D activities. Similar to other business models, R&D systems are characterized by complex structure and dynamic behavior. It's often difficult to predict or trace the consequences of certain decisions due to the existence of delays, non-linearities and causal feedback inherent …

Ballistic Imaging Of The Liquid Core For A Steady Jet In Crossflow, Mark A. Linne, Megan Paciaroni, James R. Gord, Terrence R. Meyer
Terrence R Meyer
A time-gated ballistic imaging instrument is used to obtain high-spatial-resolution, single-shot images of the liquid core in a water spray issuing into a gaseous crossflow. We describe further development of the diagnostic technique to improve spatial resolution and present images and statistics for various jets under crossflow experimental conditions (different Weber numbers). Series of these images reveal a near-nozzle flow field undergoing breakup and subsequent droplet formation by stripping. One can also detect signatures of spatially periodic behavior in the liquid core and formation of small voids during breakup.

A compact, high-speed tunable, diode-laser-based mid-infrared (MIR) laser source has been developed for absorption spectroscopy of CO2 at rates up to 10 kHz. Radiation at 4.5 um with a mode-hop-free tuning range of 80 GHz is generated by difference-frequency mixing the 860 nm output of a distributed-feedback diode laser with the 1064 nm output of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal. MIR absorption spectroscopy of CO2 with a detection limit of 44 ppm m at 10 kHz is demonstrated in a C2H4-air laminar diffusion flame and in the exhaust of a liquid-fueled model gas-turbine combustor.

Voice recognition facilitates a human interaction with the machine. VR may be used to replace the manual task of pushing buttons on a wireless telephone keypad. This is particularly useful when the hands of the user are busy with other activities like driving a car.
However, the VRS system has several limitations. The VRS requires lot of training and customization in order to be effectively used by individual users as each individual falls into different voice patterns. Besides the voice interface is complex and is not as reliable as the keyboard or mouse. This article illustrates some interesting inventions on …

Branching In Electrospinning Of Nanofibers, Darrell Reneker
Branching In Electrospinning Of Nanofibers, Darrell Reneker
Darrell Hyson Reneker
Electrospinning of polymer nanofibers often begins with a single, straight, elongating, and electrified fluid jet that emanates from a droplet tip when the electric field at the surface is high enough. After some distance an electrically driven bending instability of the elongating jet occurs. For a polymer solution suitable for electrospinning, capillary instability does not cause the jet to become a spray of droplets. Under some conditions, a sequence of secondary jet branches emanates from the primary jet. This paper describes an experiment in which many closely spaced branches along the jet were observed during the electrospinning of a polycaprolactone …

Rupture Of Two-Dimensional Alkane Crystal, Ali Dhinojwala
Rupture Of Two-Dimensional Alkane Crystal, Ali Dhinojwala
Ali Dhinojwala
We have studied the breaking of a two-dimensional alkane crystal above the disordered melt using an oscillating bubble rheometer. Surface tension changes abruptly during the expansion and contraction cycle. We postulate that this is due to rupture of the 2D crystal at grain boundaries. The magnitude of the abrupt change in surface tension decreases with a decrease in the rate of change of bubble surface area with a power law exponent of 0.8. The interfacial area formed after rupture decreases with a decrease in rate. These results provide new insights in understanding defect-mediated rupture in confined geometry.
Template-Induced Enhanced Ordering Under Confinement, Mesfin Tsige
Template-Induced Enhanced Ordering Under Confinement, Mesfin Tsige
Mesfin Tsige
We report a surprisingly strong ordering of Si-(CH(3))(2) groups upon confinement between two surfaces, an oxidized poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS(ox)) elastomer and a methyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer (octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)) on sapphire substrates. This enhanced ordering is induced by the template of ordered methyl groups of OTS and is not observed for other surfaces (fluorinated monolayers and sapphire substrates). This strong ordering is reminiscent of layering observed for confined symmetric molecules between two mica surfaces but was expected to vanish between rough macroscopic surfaces. These results provide new insights on confined structure at the interface between two solids and are important in the …
Confinement-Induced Ordering Of Alkanes Between An Elastomer And A Solid Surface, Ali Dhinojwala
Confinement-Induced Ordering Of Alkanes Between An Elastomer And A Solid Surface, Ali Dhinojwala
Ali Dhinojwala
We have studied the molecular structure of liquid alkanes confined between a flexible elastomeric poly(dimethyl siloxane) lens and a rigid sapphire substrate using surface-sensitive infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The reduction in the gauche defects suggests ordering of liquid alkanes under confinement. The cooling of confined liquid below the freezing temperature leads to crystallization with alkane molecules lying on the substrate with the symmetry axis parallel to the surface normal. This structure is very different from the bulk alkane crystals next to sapphire or air interfaces.

Controllability Of Lumped Parameter Chemical Reactors, Rafael Maya-Yescas
Rafael Maya-Yescas
Although there have been several attempts to develop systematic evaluation of control schemes, the choosing and pairing of control variables in chemical reactors is not an easy task. Intrinsic nonlinearities of this kind of systems provoke dynamic responses that are difficult to predict. In this paper, a simple proposition for the evaluation of pairs of control and manipulated variables is developed for nonlinear control affine systems. It compliments the RGA analysis for nonlinear systems because is based on the relationship between zero dynamics and control stability. The resulting strategy is simple, easy to understand and easy to apply for the …

Operating a GUI through eyeball is a complex mechanism and not used as often as mouse or trackball. But there are situations where eye-mouse devices can play a tremendous role especially where the hands of the user are not available or busy to perform other activities. The difficulties of implementing an eye-cursor control system are many. The article illustrates some inventions on eye-cursor control system, which attempt to eliminate the difficulties of the prior art mechanisms.

Departments of transportation spend considerable time and money repairing pavement failures that occur in the base or subgrade materials near bridge ends. Investigation of these failures often reveal saturated base/subgrade materials. The objectives of this research were to determine all possible sources for water intrusion, develop methods to recognize in-the-field causes of water collection at bridge approaches, and to develop new repair methods that can be economically implemented in the field to minimize water intrusion or remove water from soils.
Research focused on existing bridge approaches, concentrated on maintenance techniques to prevent water intrusion at bridge ends, and included an …

Design Analysis And Evaluation Of 1 And 2 Op-Amp Topology For Design Of Stable Narrow Band-Pass Filter, Raman K. Attri
Raman K. Attri
Band pass filtering techniques have been a challenging task due to requirement of keeping Quality factor, gain and mid-frequency of the filter independent of each other. Other most important aspect is keeping the filter stable, keeping mid-frequency immune to circuit component tolerances and to achieve the mid-frequency at the accurate value. The requirements become more stringent for bandwidth curve, roll-off curve and preciseness of frequency filtering as we move down to low frequency applications where the shift in few Hz would cause great frequency errors.. This paper evaluate the performance of 1 and 2 op-amp topology if those can be …

Impact Of Interconnection Photovoltaic/Wind System With Utility On Their Reliability Using A Fuzzy Scheme, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Reliability analysis has been considered as an important step in any system design process. a reliable electrical power system means that the system which having sufficient power to feed the load demand during a certain period or in other word, having small Loss of Load Probability (LOLP). LOLP is defined as an expected fraction of load not met by its needed power from electrical power system during its lifetime. Photovoltaic (PV) / Wind Energy System (WES) hybrid electric power system (PV/WES HEPS) differs considerably from the utility grid (UG) in their performance and operating characteristics. With the interconnection of PV/WES …

Improved Vehicle Based Multibeam Bathymetry Using Sub-Maps And Slam, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh
Christopher N. Roman
This paper presents an algorithm to improve sub-sea acoustic multibeam bottom mapping based on the simultaneous mapping and localization (SLAM) methodology. Multibeam bathymetry from underwater water vehicles can yield valuable large scale terrain maps of the sea door, but the overall accuracy of these maps is typically limited by the accuracy of the vehicle position estimates. The solution presented here uses small bathymetric patches created over short time scales in a sub-mapping context. These patches are registered with respect to one another and assembled in a single coordinate frame to produce a more accurate terrain estimate and provide improved renavigation …
