Emission of hydrogen chloride (HCl) from coal combustion is not controlled just like for example sulpfur dioxide emission. But HCl emission is also important, because chlorine content in some types of coal can reach the similar level to sulfur content. In the paper the measurement results of HCl emission to the air during combustion of three types of coal with law content of chlorine were presented. The researches were carried out for a steam pulverized coal boiler (max. boiler efficiency – 430 t/h) during three various loads (respectively 65, 80 and 95 % of maximum efficiency) without flue gas desulfurization. …

Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Commercially Available Brake Shoe Lining Materials: A Comparative Study

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

The physical and chemical characteristics of four commercial automotive brake shoe lining materials used in heavy vehicles have been investigated and compared. Relevant physical properties viz. density, water absorption and swelling characteristics were determined using standard test methods. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and optical microscopic techniques were used to identify the constituents. It has been observed that all of the four friction materials contain phenol formaldehyde resin as the matrix. Other major ingredients were also the same in all the samples but their amount and size varied. These include asbestos as fibre reinforcement, barium sulphate as filler and brass particles …

The paper presents a methodology for evaluating the cleaning difficulty and toxicity of combustion gases from waste incineration based on the knowledge of gases composition. This type of evaluation may be applicable to selection or modernization of flue gas cleaning systems for waste incineration plants and to comparative analy-sis of a pollution degree of raw (unclean) combustion gases. In the evaluation of the cleaning difficulty of gases six categories of difficulty have been identified for removal of selected substances or groups of substances. The evaluation is made individually for substances or groups of substances on condition their concentrations in flue …

Surface Structure Of Alkylsilylated Hzsm-5 As Phase-Boundary Catalyst, Hadi Nur, Yun Hau Ng, Mohd Nazlan Mohd Muhid, Halimaton Hamdan Nov 2004

Surface Structure Of Alkylsilylated Hzsm-5 As Phase-Boundary Catalyst, Hadi Nur, Yun Hau Ng, Mohd Nazlan Mohd Muhid, Halimaton Hamdan

Yun Hau Ng

The need for cleaner environment concerns motivates the development of more efficient catalytic system. Based on this consideration, recently a novel catalyst named "Phase-boundary catalyst", a bimodal amphiphilic solid catalyst, was proposed. It was demonstrated that the catalytic system containing phase-boundary catalyst required neither stirring to make an emulsion nor addition of a co-solvent to make a homogeneous solution to drive the reaction. The driving force that has prompted this paper is to investigate the surface structure of alkylsilylated HZSM-5 as phase-boundary catalyst. Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) of ammonia and, 13C and 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy were used to elucidate …

Pulse Multiplication In Forced-Commutated Current Source Converters By Dc Ripple Reinjection, J. Arrillaga, N. R. Watson, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu

Lasantha Bernard Perera

A dc-ripple reinjection scheme is described that doubles the number of pulses of the forcecommutated current source converter. The reinjection circuit includes a feedback converter in series with the dc output which provides automatic adjustment of the reinjected current as the dc side current changes. The reinjection concept is also generalised to produce pulse multiplication.

Speaker Identification Using Usable Speech Concept, Ananth N. Iyer, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno, Jashmin K. Shah, Edward J. Cupples, Stanley J. Wenndt Sep 2004

Speaker Identification Using Usable Speech Concept, Ananth N. Iyer, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno, Jashmin K. Shah, Edward J. Cupples, Stanley J. Wenndt

Most signal processing involves processing a signal without concern for the quality or information content of that signal. In speech processing, speech is processed on a frame-by-frame basis, usually only with concern that the frame is either speech or silence. However, knowing how reliable the information is in a frame of speech can be very important and useful. This is where usable speech detection and extraction can play a very important role. The usable speech frames can be defined as frames of speech that contain higher information content compared to unusable frames with reference to a particular application. We have …

Robust Speaker Verification With Principal Pitch Components, Robert M. Nickel, Sachin P. Oswal, Ananth N. Iyer

Ananth N Iyer

We are presenting a new method that improves the accuracy of text dependent speaker identification systems. The new method exploits a set of novel speech features that is derived from a principal component analysis (PC) of voiced speech segments. The new PC features are only weakly correlated with the corresponding cepstral features. A distance measure that combines both, cepstral and PC pitch features provides a discriminative power that cannot be achieved with cepstral features alone. It is well known that the discriminative power of cepstral features declines if the dimensionality of the feature space is increased beyond its optimal value. …

Sequential K-Nn Pattern Recognition For Usable Speech Classification, Jashmin K. Shah, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno, Ananth N. Iyer Sep 2004

Sequential K-Nn Pattern Recognition For Usable Speech Classification, Jashmin K. Shah, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno, Ananth N. Iyer

Ananth N Iyer

The accuracy of speech processing techniques degrades when operating in a co-channel environment. Co-channel speech occurs when more than one person is talking at the same time. The idea of usable speech segmentation is to identify and extract those portions of co-channel speech that are minimally degraded but still useful for speech processing application such as speaker identification. Usable speech measures are features that are extracted from the co-channel signal to distinguish between usable and unusable speech. In this paper, a new usable speech extraction technique is presented. The new method extracts features recursively and variable length segmentation is performed …

A Generalized Neuron Based Pss In A Multi-Machine Power System, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

An artificial neural network can work as an intelligent controller for nonlinear dynamic systems through learning, as it can easily accommodate the nonlinearities and time dependencies. In dealing with complex problems, most common neural networks have some drawbacks of large training time, large number of neurons and hidden layers. These drawbacks can be overcome by a nonlinear controller based on a generalized neuron (GN) which retains the quick response of neural net. Results of studies with a GN-based power system stabilizer on a five-machine power system show that it can provide good damping over a wide operating range and significantly …

Applications Of Generalised Neural Network For Aircraft Landing Control System, D. K. Chaturvedi, R. Chauhan, P. K. Kalra Sep 2004

Applications Of Generalised Neural Network For Aircraft Landing Control System, D. K. Chaturvedi, R. Chauhan, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

It is observed that landing performance is the most typical phase of an aircraft perfromance. During landing operation the stability and controllability are the major considerations. To achieve safe landing, an aircraft has to be controlled in such a way that its wheels touch the ground comfortably and gently within the paved surface of the runway. The conventional control theory found very successful in solving well defined problems, which are described precisely with definite and clearly mentioned boundaries. In real life systems the boundaries can't be defined clearly and conventional controller does not give satisfactory results. Whenever, an aircraft deviates …

Screening Of Mgo- And Ceo2-Based Catalysts For Carbon Dioxide Oxidative Coupling Of Methane To C2+ Hydrocarbon, Istadi, Nor Aishah Saidina Amin Aug 2004

Screening Of Mgo- And Ceo2-Based Catalysts For Carbon Dioxide Oxidative Coupling Of Methane To C2+ Hydrocarbon, Istadi, Nor Aishah Saidina Amin

Istadi

The catalyst screening tests for carbon dioxide oxidative coupling of methane (CO2-OCM) have been investigated over ternary and binary metal oxide catalysts. The catalysts are prepared by doping MgO- and CeO2-based solids with oxides from alkali (Li2O), alkaline earth (CaO), and transition metal groups (WO3 or MnO). The presence of the peroxide (O2_2 ) active sites on the Li2O2, revealed by Raman spectroscopy, may be the key factor in the enhanced performance of some of the Li2O/MgO catalysts. The high reducibility of the CeO2 catalyst, an important factor in the CO2-OCM catalyst activity, may be enhanced by the presence of …

Wpływ Wybranych Parametrów Na Wielkość Emisji Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Z Procesu Wysokotemperaturowego Spalania Odpadów Chloroorganicznych, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

In the paper preliminary analysis of the continuous measurements of the air pollutants emission and other

parameters of high-temperature process of chloroorganic waste incineration (liquid injection incinerator - Vicarb technology) are presented. In the analysis there was taken especially note of the parameters influencing the emissions, which could significantly vary in the incineration system (for example the amount of incinerated wastes) and pollutants like hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. Basing the results of the analysis, it was affirmed that chlorine plays an inhibiting role on the formation of nitrogen oxides in the chloroorganic waste incineration system. On the …

In the paper, some results of the measurement of mercury emission from OP-430 boiler working in the Combustion Plant “Kraków S.A.” are presented. The tests were carried out during combustion of various coals and changeable the boiler efficiency. Apart from investigation of mercury emission to the atmosphere (in gaseous and solid phase), total mercury concentration in coal, bottom ash and dust collected in electrostatic precipitators were analysed as well. Thus emission amount could be verified by means of the approximate mercury balance performed for the coal combustion process.

English title: Mercury emission from coal combustion.

Velocity Effects On The Wear, Friction And Tribochemistry Of Aluminum Mmc Sliding Against Phenolic Brake Pad Jun 2004

Velocity Effects On The Wear, Friction And Tribochemistry Of Aluminum Mmc Sliding Against Phenolic Brake Pad

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Two aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) reinforced with 13 vol.% of SiC or B4C particles were made by stir casting followed by hot extrusion. Effects of sliding velocity on the wear, friction and tribochemistry of the worn surfaces of both composites sliding against a commercial phenolic brake pad have been investigated under dry condition. The wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc type apparatus at two linear sliding speeds: 1.62 and 4.17 m s-1 under a constant contact pressure of 0.75 MPa for a sliding distance of 5832 m. The coefficient of friction was recorded and wear rate of …

Speech that is corrupted by nonstationary interference, but contains segments that are still usable for applications such as speaker identification or speech recognition, is referred to as "usable" speech. A common example of nonstationary interference occurs when there is more than one person talking at the same time, which is known as co-channel speech. In general the above speech processing applications do not work in co-channel environments; however, they can work on the extracted usable segments. Unfortunately, currently available usable speech measures only detect about 75% of the total available usable speech. The first reason for this high error stems …

Effect Of Hydrotreating Fcc Feedstock On Product Distribution, Rafael Maya-Yescas May 2004

Effect Of Hydrotreating Fcc Feedstock On Product Distribution, Rafael Maya-Yescas

Rafael Maya-Yescas

The demand of low-sulfur fuels has been increasing during the last 20 years due to environmental concerns about SOx emissions from processing plants and engines. Due to its high contribution to the gasoline pool, hydrotreating fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) feedstock offers several advantages, such as the increase of conversion and yields of gasoline and liquid-phase gas, meanwhile sulfur content in fuels is diminished. However, there are more important factors to be considered when hydrotreating FCC feedstock. In this work, two FCC feedstocks, typical and hydrotreated, were converted in a microactivity test (MAT) reactor, as described by ASTM D-3907-92, at different …

Translation Of Mat Kinetic Data To Model Industrial Catalytic Cracking Units, Rafael Maya-Yescas, Elizabeth León-Becerril, Daniel Salazar-Sotelo May 2004

Translation Of Mat Kinetic Data To Model Industrial Catalytic Cracking Units, Rafael Maya-Yescas, Elizabeth León-Becerril, Daniel Salazar-Sotelo

Rafael Maya-Yescas

Bench and laboratory scale reactors are required to infer kinetic data for catalytic cracking units. One of the most common methods is the microactivity test (MAT, ASTM D-3902-92), that emulates the catalyst-to-oil ratio using a fixed-bed reactor and a semi-batch accumulator of liquids. Translation of data obtained from MAT tests in order to infer kinetic parameter to model continuous industrial units is, consequently, difficult and uncertain. In this work, the extraction of kinetic data obtained in a MAT reactor is analyzed. Estimation of a kinetic rate equation to evaluate instantaneous conversion in MAT reactors is performed. The activation energy obtained …

Solution Of Multi-Species Real Gas Flows With Electric Arc And Wall Ablation, Alexandre Martin, Marcelo Reggio, Jean-Yves Trépanier May 2004

Solution Of Multi-Species Real Gas Flows With Electric Arc And Wall Ablation, Alexandre Martin, Marcelo Reggio, Jean-Yves Trépanier

Alexandre Martin

Nozzle ablation caused by high temperature electric arc is a physical phenomenon commonly found in high voltage electrical devices. In circuit breakers, for example, the strong ablation of the PTFE nozzle wall results in the creation of new species, which implies various chemical reactions. For the simulation of these phenomena, a bi-dimensional axisymmetric Euler equations model for multi-species flow has been developed. To solve the governing equations, a finite volume method based on Roe’s flux splitting scheme [11] has been established. The proposed scheme approaches the mean-values used in Roe’s matrix in a new way. To take into account the …

Ron D. Katznelson

This note is submitted in support of a change in DOCSIS specifications for spurious performance. It shows that the impact of a proposed change is negligible and that the advantages far outweigh the perceived disadvantages of adopting such a change.

Improved Generalized Neuron Model For Short Term Load Forecasting, D. K. Chaturvedi, Ravindra Kumar, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

The conventional neural networks consisting of simple neuron models have various drawbacks like large training time for complex problems, huge data requirement to train non linear complex problems, unknown ANN structure, the relatively larger number of hidden nodes required, problem of local minima etc. To make the Artificial Neural Network more efficient and to overcome the above-mentioned problems the new improved generalized neuron model is proposed in this work. The proposed neuron models have both summation and product as aggregation function. The generalized neuron models have flexibility at both the aggregation and activation function level to cope with the non-linearity …

A Generalized Neuron Based Adaptive Power System Stabilizer, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used as intelligent controllers to control nonlinear, dynamic systems through learning, which can easily accommodate the nonlinearities and time dependencies. However, they require long training time and large numbers of neurons to deal with complexproblems. To overcome these drawbacks, a generalised neuron (GN) has been developed that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time. Taking benefit of these characteristics of the GN, a new generalised neuron-based adaptive power system stabiliser (GNPSS) is proposed. The GNPSS consists of a GN as an identifier, which tracks the dynamics of the plant, and a GN …
