Tightening of the European Union law in the field of the air emission limit values from waste incineration causes necessity for existing and new incineration plants to conform to the standards. It will often involve modernization of the flue gas cleaning system. Proposed in the paper the methodology of evaluation of the combustion gases composition in point of view cleaning difficulty should be useful to this end. Average toxicity factors for hazardous waste incineration flue gases were defined as well. Among other things they can be used in comparative analysis of the air pollutant concentration in the raw gas (before …

We compare screened real-space and reciprocal-space implementations of Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker electronic-structure method for their applicability to largescale problems requiring various levels of accuracy. We show that real-space calculations in metals can become impractical to describe energies. We suggest a combined r- and k-space scheme as the most efficient and flexible strategy for accurate energy calculations. Our hybrid code is suitable for (parallel) large-scale calculations involving complex, multicomponent systems. We also discuss how details of numerical procedures can affect accuracy of such calculations.

Classical Density Functional Theory Of Freezing In Simple Fluids: Numerically Induced False Solutions, M. Valera, F. J. Pinski, Duane D. Johnson Nov 2001

Classical Density Functional Theory Of Freezing In Simple Fluids: Numerically Induced False Solutions, M. Valera, F. J. Pinski, Duane D. Johnson

Duane D. Johnson

Density functional theory (DFT) has provided many insights into the freezing of simple fluids. Several analytical and numerical solution have shown that the DFT provides an accurate description of freezing of hard spheres and their mixtures. Compared to other techniques, numerical, grid-based algorithms for solving the DFT equations have more variational freedom and are capable of describing subtle behavior, as that seen in mixtures with multipeaked density profiles. However the grid-based approach is sensitive to the coarseness of the mesh employed. Here we summarize how the granularity of the mesh affects the freezing point within the DFT. For coarse meshes, …

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh Oct 2001

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Creating geometrically accurate photomosaics of underwater sites using images collected from an AUV or ROV is a difficult task due to dimensional errors which grow as a function of 3D image distortion and the mosaicking process. Although photomosiacs are accurate locally their utility for accurately representing a large survey area is jeopardized by this error growth. Evaluating the error in a mosaic is the first step in creating globally accurate photomosaics of an unstructured environment with bounded error. Using vehicle navigation data and sensor offsets it is possible to estimate the error present in large area photomosaics independent of the …

The work summarizes factors influencing on air emissions from various full-scale hazardous waste incinerators (rotary kiln, multiple hearth furnace, starved-air incinerator, fluidized bed incinerator, liquid injection incinerator). Air pollutant emissions from hazardous waste incineration can be minimized not only by flue-gas cleaning. There are many factors that influence on flue-gas composition and the quantity of air pollutants formed during incineration: the type, the composition and the quantity of waste, the way of waste introducing to the incinerator, excess air ratio, combustion temperature, retention time of exhaust gases etc. Special attention was paid to the loading of waste and incineration conditions …

The clinker burning plant is ideally suited for processing a wide variety of hazardous waste materials. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. 1350-1450 Centigrades in the burning zone) as well as long gas-residence time (ca. 6-10 s) provide potentially excellent conditions for destruction of toxic organic compounds. Non-volatile compounds are retained in the solid phase and built into the clinker. A lot of other (for example acid gases) can also be absorbed by alkaline solid phase. Old pesticide wastes present a big problem in Poland now. They can be use as waste-derived fuels in cement kilns, especially in the …

The paper presents the results of modeling of deposition on the land surface of dust, lead and cadmium emitted from the "Katowice" Steelworks. The calculations were carried out in the vicinity of the location of the dust deposition measuring points existing around the plant. Computational data were compared with the results obtained from direct measurements for the same calendar year. The responsibility of this plant in shaping the level of dust and heavy metal deposition in the region of the protective zone was determined.

Dobór Systemu Oczyszczania Gazów Odlotowych Ze Spalania Odpadów Niebezpiecznych, Robert Oleniacz Jun 2001

Dobór Systemu Oczyszczania Gazów Odlotowych Ze Spalania Odpadów Niebezpiecznych, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

The flue gas cleaning system is usually one of the most costly elements of the installation to the incineration of hazardous waste. Adapting the system to the actual needs could therefore bring obvious economic benefits.

The paper presents the method of the preselection of the configuration of the cleaning system based on knowledge of the level of concentration of selected components of the raw exhaust gas (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, total dust, mercury, cadmium and thallium, and other heavy metals). Twelve examples of flue-gas cleaning systems were proposed and extreme concentration values of the substances in the raw …

Simulation Of Inviscid Multi-Species Plasma Flow, Alexandre Martin, Marcelo Reggio, Jean-Yves Trépanier

Alexandre Martin

A multi-species solver for plasma at thermodynamical equilibrium is developed. A numerical scheme, based on Roe's, is implemented with some modification regarding the average quantities. A perfect gas treatment is carried out for validations, and a quasi-real gas treatment is also presented. The latter takes into account the changes in the composition of the gas caused by fluctuations in temperature and density.

various size ratios, σ2/σ1, using density functional theory. The Grand Potential is minimized using an unbiased, discrete, real-space mesh that does not constrain the shape of the density, and, in many cases, leads to solutions qualitatively different from those using Gaussians and plane-waves. Besides the usual face-centered-cubic solid-solution phase for σ2/σ1≈1.0, we find a sublattice-melt phase for σ2/σ1=0.85–0.5 (where the small-sphere density is nonlocalized and multi-peaked) and the NaCl phase for σ2/σ1=0.45–0.35 (when the small-sphere density again sharpens). For a range of size ratios of soft sphere mixtures, we could not find stable nonuniform solutions. Preliminary calculations within a Modified-Weighted …

Our lives are filled with images. Everyday we see signals, read signs, and learn symbols. We find our way with maps, look for news and bargains in newspapers, calculate ourbills and taxes. We turn printed music into wonderful sounds, often without consciouseffort. Icons fill our churches, synagogues and mosques, dot our computer screens, andare sprawled on billboards, on clothing and advertisement pages. Architecture and artconspire to fill our views with meaningful shapes and form. Pictures capture an instant intime, while movies and video entertain us with visual motion. We live in a visual world, full of information transmitted by light.

The Age Of Entanglement

David D Nolte

Quantum mechanics is a venerable field of study. The year 2000 marked the 100th anniversary of theoriginal quantum hypothesis proposed by Max Planck in November of 1900. Few current fields in physicsor engineering are as old as quantum mechanics. It predates relativity, both special and general. It predatesnuclear and particle physics. Quantum mechanics even predates universal acceptance of the molecularhypothesis, that is, that all matter is made up of individual molecules in thermal motion. It may be hard tobelieve, but this happened only after Einstein's paper on Brownian motion was published in his miracleyear 1905.
