Tb177: Evaluation Of An Experimental Filter Medium For Water Re-Use Systems, John Riley, David Cole, Robert Bayer

Technical Bulletins

This report describes the development and testing of a new material for use as a filter medium in recirculating aquaculture systems and other water quality control situations. The material consists of a combination of activated carbon and a hydrophilic urethane foam in a homogeneous matrix. Its physical properties relevant to filtration were determined. It was then tested for its ability to remove various dissolved organic compounds and inorganic nitrogenous compounds in the form of a synthetic waste-water containing ammonia and nitrite. Finally it was subjected to long-term use in the biofilter of a fish culture system. It proved to be …

Method Of Removing Carbon From Fly Ash, Robert William Styron, Jiann-Yangg Hwang May 2000

Method Of Removing Carbon From Fly Ash, Robert William Styron, Jiann-Yangg Hwang

Michigan Tech Patents

A froth flotation method is provided for removing carbon from fly ash which utilizes an environmental friendly conditioning agent. The conditioning agent preferably comprises a biodegradable oil which is added to a slurry containing raw fly ash and water. The conditioning agent renders the carbon in the fly ash hydrophobic such that upon aeration of the slurry, air bubbles attach to the carbon particles and carry' them to the surface of the slurry in the form of a froth, such that the carbon may be removed.

Control Of Mercury Emissions Using Unburned Carbon From Combustion By-Products, Jiann-Yang Hwang, Zhenglong Li Feb 2000

Control Of Mercury Emissions Using Unburned Carbon From Combustion By-Products, Jiann-Yang Hwang, Zhenglong Li

Michigan Tech Patents

Mercury emission from a flue gas such as that generated by a coal fired power plant is controlled by injecting into the flue gas unburned carbon purified from ash such as fly ash or wood ash. The unburned carbon adsorbs the mercury and is later removed from the flue gas by a particle separator. The unburned carbon collected from ash is significantly lower in cost compared to activated carbon presently used in such a process. The unburned carbon is concentrated in the sorbent by one or more separation processes used to remove noncarbon particles from the fly ash. These processes …

Adding A Filter To Your Parts Washer, Jeff England Jan 2000

Adding A Filter To Your Parts Washer, Jeff England

Iowa Waste Reduction Center Book Gallery

Filtering parts washing solvent is a good way to increase the life of cleaning solvent, and improve the cleaning performance of a parts washer. There are several options when considering filtration. If a business is adding or replacing units, the reasonable thing to do is to simply purchase a parts washer with a filtering unit built in. However, if the cost of new units is a concern, or if the old units are in working order, it might be more desirable to add a filtration unit to the current system.
