Multi-Diameter Vise Clamp And Collet Jaw, Lloyd D. Snell

Lloyd D Snell

A machine vise has incorporated into it a pair of collet jaws that allows for the machining of top surfaces and ends of a held part. The collet jaws are secured to each of the clamping blocks on the machine vise. The collet jaws include at least one collet pocket shaped into the inside surface of each collet jaw. The collet pockets are designed to receive collet pads which are shaped to hold a generally cylindrical part with varying diameters. By having more than one collet pocket within each collet jaw, several different sizes of collet pads can be utilized …

Dependence Of Open-Circuit Voltage In Hydrogenated Protocrystalline Silicon Solar Cells On Carrier Recombination In P/I Interface And Bulk Regions, Joshua M. Pearce, Randy J. Koval, Andre S. Ferlauto, Robert W. Collins, Christopher R. Wronski, Jeffrey Yang, Subbhendu Guha

Joshua M. Pearce

Contribution of carrier recombination from the p/i interface regions and the bulk to the dark current–voltage (JD–V) and short-circuit current–open-circuit voltage (Jsc–Voc)characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous-silicon (a-Si:H) p–i–n and n–i–psolar cells have been separated, identified, and quantified. Results are presented and discussed here which show that a maximum 1 sun Voc for a given bulk material can be validly extrapolated from bulk dominated Jsc–Voccharacteristics at low illumination intensities.

A New Autonomous Underwater Vehicle For Imaging Research, C. Roman, O. Pizarro, R. Eustice, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Currently, unmanned underwater vehicles either tend to be cumbersome and complex to run, or operationally simple, but not quite suitable platforms for deep water imaging. This paper presents an alternative design in the form of a new low cost and easier to use autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for imaging research. The objective of the vehicle is to serve as a readily available and operationally simple tool that allows rapid testing of imaging algorithms in areas such as photomosaicking, 3D image reconstruction from a single camera, image based navigation, and multi-sensor fusion of bathymetry and optical data. These are all current …

Development Of High Performance Concrete Using Silica Fume At Relatively High Water-Binder Ratios, Hilmi Mahmud

Hilmi Mahmud

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of developing high performance concrete (HPC) using silica fume (SF) at relatively high water-binder ratios. For this purpose, water-binder ratios of 0.45 and 0.50 were considered. Test specimens were air and water cured and exposed to a medium temperature range of 20 °C to 50 °C. The compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and initial surface absorption (ISA) of hardened concrete were determined in the laboratory. Test results indicated that concrete under water curing offers the best results. The highest level of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity and the lowest …

Functional Infrared Imaging Of The Breast, J. Keyserlingk, P. Ahlgren, E. Yu, N. Belliveau, M. Yassa

Edward Yu

In order to re-assess the potential contribution of infrared (IR) imaging as a first-line component of a multi-imaging strategy using currently available technology, we first review the history of its introduction and clinical application, including the results of the Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Projects (BCDDP). We then discuss experiments with a new high-resolution, computerized IR station and software program acquired by the Ville Marie Breast Center to assess IR imaging's ability to complement clinical examination and mammography in the early detection of breast cancer. Our goal is to show that high-resolution IR imaging provides additional safe, practical, and objective information …

Advances In Fusion Of High Resolution Underwater Optical And Acoustic Data, H. Singh, C. Roman, L. Whitcomb, D. Yoerger Apr 2000

Advances In Fusion Of High Resolution Underwater Optical And Acoustic Data, H. Singh, C. Roman, L. Whitcomb, D. Yoerger

Christopher N. Roman

We report efforts to merge data from the complementary modalities of optical and acoustic sensing for obtaining more accurate representations of the seafloor. We show that the principal obstacles to merging the acoustic and optical imaging modalities are the distortions inherent to each modality. The construction of geometrically accurate photomosaics is dominated by incremental errors arising as individual images are scaled and warped to form the photomosaic. For microbathymetric mapping, principal errors arise from sensor position and orientation calibration parameters that affect our ability to construct maps from sonar data that are commensurate with sensor and navigation resolution. We show …

Time Domain Probabilistic Risk Assessment:, George H. Baker, Charles T. C. Mo

George H Baker

For critical facilities, survivability and reconstitution in stressful environments generated by electromagnetic transients, sabotage, terrorist activity, military conflict, or Murphy’s laws are issues of concern. Critical fixed facilities are likely to be functionally complex and their system-wide failure probabilities, modes, and consequences are often not obvious. To analyze and quantify survivability, existing probabilistic risk assessment tools usually provide a “snapshot” of failure modes at a single point of time for certain initiating conditions. Likewise, elaborate physics models developed to treat weapons effects on structures and individual functional components compute effects at a single time point.

We have developed a tool …

Software Engineering For Startups, Todd Sedano Apr 2000

Software Engineering For Startups, Todd Sedano

Todd Sedano

My interests include finding Effective Processes and learning which processes are best suited for startups. The nature of small business, the agility to change direction quickly, allows it to handle minor bad software practices better. However, failure for a startup may crater the company where as a large company may recover from the fumble. Due to the fierce competition for a startup with limited resources, we should consider tasks that reduce the time to market.

Artificial Neural Network Technologies Applied To Road Condition Classification Using Acoustic Signals, Kevin Mcfall Feb 2000

Artificial Neural Network Technologies Applied To Road Condition Classification Using Acoustic Signals, Kevin Mcfall

Kevin McFall

The goal of the ARCANA project is to produce a road condition sensor that can be used in road weather information systems. ARCANA implements signal processing artificial neural network (ANN) technology to classify signals recorded with a microphone. This paper is a review of ANN technologies and their application to ARCANA. The entire process is discussed from data acquisition, feature extraction, and ANN design to the actually training of the network. Preliminary classification results in an independent validation set yielded 88% correct classification. This was improved to a full 100% with the addition of a confidence level threshold.

Service-Learning And Engineering Ethics, Michael Pritchard Dec 1999

Service-Learning And Engineering Ethics, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

This paper explores ways in which service-learning programs can enhance ethics education in engineering. Service-learning programs combine volunteer work and academic study. The National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE) and American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) codes of ethics explicitly encourage engineers to seek opportunities, beyond their work-related responsibilities, to serve their communities. Examples of how this can be encouraged as a part of the educational experiences of engineering students are explored.

Commande Vectorielle Indirecte D'Un Moteur À Induction Par Logique Floue, Boukhemis Chetate , Aissa Kheldoun

Boukhemis Chetate

Thermodynamic Analysis Of Convective Heat Transfer In An Annular Packed Bed, Yasar Demirel, R Kahraman Dec 1999

Thermodynamic Analysis Of Convective Heat Transfer In An Annular Packed Bed, Yasar Demirel, R Kahraman

YASAR DEMIREL

A combination of the first and second law of thermodynamics has been utilized in analyzing the convective heat transfer in an annular packed bed. The bed was heated asymmetrically by constant heat fluxes. Introduction of the packing enhances wall to fluid heat transfer considerably, hence reduces the entropy generation due to heat transfer across a finite temperature difference.

Blending Of Immiscible Polymers In A Mixing Zone Of A Twin Screw Extruder- Effects Of Compatibilization, William Macknight, O. Franzheim, T. Rische, M. Stephan Dec 1999

Blending Of Immiscible Polymers In A Mixing Zone Of A Twin Screw Extruder- Effects Of Compatibilization, William Macknight, O. Franzheim, T. Rische, M. Stephan

William MacKnight

The dependence of the morphology development of physical as well as of reactive
compatibilized polypropylene/polyamide 6 (PP /PA6) blends in a mixing zone of a
co-rotating twin screw extruder on blend composition and screw rotational speed
was investigated. A special process analytical set-up based on a co-rotating twin
screw extruder was used, which allowed melt sampling from different positions
along the operating extruder in time periods less than 10 seconds. It has been
shown that the disperse particle sizes in physical blends depend crucially on the
blend composition because of the increasing influence of coalescence with an increasing
concentration of …
