Often, engineering students do not study engineering failures or discuss ethics until they take upper division undergraduate courses or graduate level courses. One drawback to this approach is that problems analyzed in introductory courses are often contrived, uninteresting, and bear little relation to the problems encountered in engineering practice. Although several methods have been used clinically to assess aortic regurgitation (AR), there is no “gold standard” for regurgitant volume measurement. Magnetic resonance phase velocity mapping (PVM) can be used for noninvasive blood flow measurements. To evaluate the accuracy of PVM in quantifying AR with a single imaging slice in the ascending aorta, in vitro experiments were performed by using a compliant aortic model. Attention was focused on determining the slice location that provided the best results. This paper presents a real time front-end admission control scheme for ATM networks. A call management scheme which uses the burstiness associated with traffic sources in a heterogeneous ATM environment to effect dynamic assignment of bandwidth is presented. In the proposed scheme, call acceptance is based on an on-line evaluation of the upper bound on cell loss probability which is derived from the estimated distribution of the number of calls arriving. Using this scheme, the negotiated quality of service will be assured when there is no estimation error. The control mechanism is effective when the number of …

A balanced approach to shaping the closed-loop properties of the dissipative controllers for flexible structures is presented. In the balanced representation the properties of flexible structures are introduced, and a simple method of designing of the dissipative controllers is obtained. It relates the controller gains with the closed-loop pole locations. The examples illustrate the accuracy of the design method.

This paper evaluates the error probability of the rectangular frequency pulse multi-h modulation (MHPM) scheme in slowly-fading, frequency-nonselective or frequency-selective Rician and Rayleigh channels. The evaluation is performed with a method combining analysis and computer simulation. Performance degradations are evaluated for various direct-to-reflected signal ratio, Doppler shifts, and relative time delays in Rician fading channels. Compared with minimum shift keying (MSK), MHPM schemes appear to have retained their coding gains

Part I of this series introduced the diophantinized fractional model and the decompositional formulation. The various important properties of fractional continuum formulation and its decomposed version were developed. In Part II the dynamic properties of the diophantine representation are investigated. The model fitting scheme will be developed to handle an arbitrary frequency dependent structural hysteriesis. This is followed up with the results of benchmark studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of fitting.

Based on a diophantine representation of the operational powers, a fractional derivative modelling scheme is developed to simulate frequency dependent structural damping. The diophantine set of powers is established by employing the curvature properties of the defining empirical data set. These together with a remezed least square scheme are employed to construct a Chebyschev like optimal differintegro simulation. Based on the use of the rational form resulting from the diophantine representation, a composition rule is introduced to reduce the differintegro simulation to first order form.
