Bridge Decks Constructed For Increased Durability, Assaf S. Rahal Oct 1974

Bridge Decks Constructed For Increased Durability, Assaf S. Rahal

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The experimental features incorporated in this study were compaction, brooming, and hi-layered construction. Broomed surfaces initially exhibited a higher skidding resistance than non-broomed surfaces: broomed surfaces, however, wear more rapidly. No conclusive evaluation could be made at this time of the bilayered system and of tests made on the concrete cores. Electrical measurements made on the decks indicated there was no active corrosion of the steel.

The Interpretation Of Infrared And Raman Spectra Using Pattern Recognition, John Martin Comerford Sep 1974

The Interpretation Of Infrared And Raman Spectra Using Pattern Recognition, John Martin Comerford

Dissertations

An automatic classification of chemical compounds by computer processing of digitized spectral data is presented. The classification system is based on a branch of artificial intelligence known as supervised learning, and used binary linear classifiers to identify compounds as alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones or compounds containing double bonds.

Each of the 1117 spectra in volume one of Sadtler's Standard Raman Spectra was coded using a scale from 0 to 9 in the range from 4000 to 200 cm-1. One hundred and twelve readings were taken on each spectrum. These data were then examined using pattern recognition techniques, and …

Evaluation Of Herington General Integral Test For Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Raja Gopal Nori Sep 1974

Evaluation Of Herington General Integral Test For Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Raja Gopal Nori

Theses

A new set of general integral tests for the thermodynamic consistency of isothermal and isobaric equilibrium data of binary systems was proposed by E.F.G. Herington.

The systems Benzene-Cyclohexane and Benzene-n-Propanol were examined using Herington integral test-. The data used included sets of data known to be in error. One set was, in effect, at true vapor-liquid equilibrium (the data of literature) but the other data was obtained when the system was inadequately insulated and heated.

Heringtan test showed significantly different estimates for heats of mixing for the cases involved. The best data showed heats of mixing near the theoratical values. …

This Paper Discusses an Algorithm for Optimizing the Density and Parallelism of Micro coded Routines in Micro programmable Machines. Besides the Algorithm itself, the Algorithm's Uses, Design Integration Problems, Architectural Requirements, and Adaptability to Conventional Machine Characteristics Are Also Discussed and Analyzed. Even Though the Paper Proposes a Hardware Implementation of the Algorithm, the Algorithm is Viewed as an Integral Part of the Entire Microcode Generation and Usage Process, from Initial High-Level Input into a Software Microcode Compiler Down to Machine-Level Execution of the Resultant Microcode on the Host Machine. It is Believed that, by Removing Much of the Traditionally …

Sidewise Force Exerted On Slowly Falling Spheres Inside A Circular Cylinder, Gary Mark Greenstein Sep 1974

Sidewise Force Exerted On Slowly Falling Spheres Inside A Circular Cylinder, Gary Mark Greenstein

Theses

Numerical values are provided for the forces that must be applied to a reference sphere to prevent its sidewise motion when two equal-sized spheres settle through a viscous liquid bounded by a cylindrical tube. These values are presented for two independent set of circumstances:

  1. - the spheres are translating but not rotating
  2. - the spheres are rotating but not translating

Forces have been calculated assuming various distances between the sphere centers and with the line of centers at various angles to the horizontal. The results are discussed for the case where the spheres are both translating and rotating and compared …

Effect Of Mixing On Polymerizations In Batch Reactors, John Guy Steenrod Sep 1974

Effect Of Mixing On Polymerizations In Batch Reactors, John Guy Steenrod

Theses

The effects of mixing on polymerizations in batch reactors are examined theoretically for initiations by thermal decomposition of catalyst and by absorption of ionizing radiation. Mathematical expressions for predicting the first three moments of the dead polymer size distribution are presented. Two extreme mixing states. perfect and no mixing. are considered. It is shown that in batch reactors mixing in any direction in which nonuniform initiations exist increases the polymerization reaction rate and the number average molecular weight, and decreases the weight average and the polydispersity.

Experimentally, the effects of mixing were studied in a solution polymerization system, in a …

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer Sep 1974

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for engineering data on earth materials for use in site selection, design, construction, and maintenance of major engineering structures is generally accepted. Probably the most pressing need is for such data to use in preliminary considerations of site selection and design alternatives. Maps and(or) surveys giving the areal distribution of earth materials and their characteristics, together with topographic maps available for many areas, would permit much preliminary work on engineering structures to be done without the engineer ever having to leave his office.

Heating The 9th Street Interchange, Louisville, Ky, James H. Havens Sep 1974

Heating The 9th Street Interchange, Louisville, Ky, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The 9th Street interchange, I 64-2(87)3, was first conceived about 1959. Preliminary design studies began in the early 1960's. Design began about 1964. The idea of heating the ramps was first considered in the early 1960's but was not pursued intently until the final design stage (about 1968). As the design progressed, it became more and more evident that snowing and icing conditions could prevent otherwise normal passage of traffic up and down the ramps. At one point on the structure, a combination of superelevation and grade would produce a 6 1/2 percent slope. The highest ramp or "fly over" …

Droplet Dynamics In Cooling Tower Plumes, Edison A. Picklesimer Jr. Aug 1974

Droplet Dynamics In Cooling Tower Plumes, Edison A. Picklesimer Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Large cooling towers are becoming more common as a means of disposing of large quantities of waste heat from steam electric generating stations. Increased attention is being focused on how the effluents from these towers affect the environment. This research is concerned with the determination of the paths and ultimate deposition of salt laden drift drops exiting from a cooling tower by analyzing the basic droplet dynamics governing the transport of these droplets.

The equation of motion is developed for a liquid drift drop as it is transported through the atmosphere. A term appears in the equation of motion which …

Optical Excitation Of Plasmons In A Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductor, P. F. Williams, M. A. Butler, D. L. Rousseau

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We have carefully determined the optical spectrum of K2Pt(CN) 4Br0.3 - 3H2O near the reflectivity edge. Our data reveal, in addition to the expected monotonic background, a broad peak in ε2 (ω) above a threshold coinciding with the zero of ε1 (ω) near 16000 cm-1. We assign this band to indirect excitation of plasmons. Details of the excitation of plasmons are discussed with particular attention being paid to the problems presented by the one-dimensional character of the material. It is concluded that the electronic structure of this material cannot be …

Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch Aug 1974

Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We present the results of a calculation of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent longitudinal dielectric function of a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas. The electrons are taken to be localized to the chains and both the tight-binding and free-electron extremes are considered along the chain axis. Local-field effects are included. Dispersion curves for plasmons and single-particle-excitation spectra are presented. We find that the plasmon modes are not Landau damped and that for long wavelengths these modes have eigenfrequencies ranging continuously from the usual three-dimensional plasma frequency for propagation along the chain axis to zero for propagation perpendicular to it. Finally, we discuss the …

Optimal Highway Safety Improvement Investments By Dynamic Programming [Aug. 1974], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Jesse G. Mayes, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The process of determining which projects to implement under a given budget, and which to defer until later, is central to the planning and management of highway systems. With a limited budget for construction, maintenance, and safety improvements, investments which will produce the optimal benefits must be chosen. This is often impossible to accomplish without the aid of a computer because of the complexity of the problem. Dynamic programming has been tested and verified as an efficient method for selecting priority projects to derive maximum benefits.

There are several approaches to priority programming as it is related to the capital …

An Automatic Rinse Tank Controller For Industrial Applications, Aliasghar Emami

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes an automatic Rinse Tank Control System used in detection and removal of contaminating agents from industrial plating rinse tanks. It automatically monitors the purity of the rinse water in sixteen separate rinse tanks, and permits fresh water to enter the tanks only when the conductivity of the rinse water in each tank exceeds a predetermined level. Its use will result in large savings in consumption of fresh water and the subsequent reduction in discharge of effluent to the treatment plants.

Water Salvage Potentials In Utah, Volume I. Open Water Evaporation And Monolayer Suppression Potential, Trevor C. Hughes, E. Arlo Richardson, James A. Franckiewicz

Reports

An estimate of the potential in Utah for evaporation suppression by the monolayer film method is presented. The model estimates evaporation suppression as a function of wind speed, a four parameter exposure factor, and reservoir size. The estimated suppression factors vary from 0 to 30 percent and average 11 percent of the statewide total annual evaporation. Estimates of May to October evaporation and suppression potential are calculated for each of the 227 impoundments in the surface water inventory. A forthcoming report in this series will examine the potential for evaporation suppression by thermal destratification. This procedure, which is already being …

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao Jul 1974

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cold-formed steel panels often are used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor decking in steel framed buildings or pre-engineered metal buildings. Diaphragms formed by interconnecting these panels have considerable in-plane shear resistance, and can be utilized as bracing against buckling for individual members of a steel frame. For wall columns the diaphragm may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are connected to the columns. A procedure is presented for the design of I-section beams and columns with diaphragm or diaphragm-girt bracing. The procedure is based on the ultimate load capacity of fully braced members, …

The area, though still depressed in terms of per capita income and employment, has many resources available for growth. The study area is predominantly an agriculturally-oriented economy. However, manufacturing employment has increased in recent years, mainly because of industrial sites made available by local industrial commissions.

Overall, social services appear to be adequate and very near statewide averages. Recreational facilities are not highly developed and are primarily of the summer outdoor type.

Reconstruction of KY …

Temperature Distributions In Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate Jul 1974

Temperature Distributions In Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The straight-line relationship between temperatures at a given depth and the surface temperatures combined with 5-day average air temperatures appears to be as valid for upper New York State and Arizona as it was for Maryland. The main differences were in the ranges and mean temperatures. Values given herein are for straight-line equations for all 24 hours and for the depths of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches (5.1, 10.2, 15.2, 20.3, 25.4, and 30.5 cm). The original concept appears to be valid and may be used with confidence for estimating pavement temperatures at other latitudes and longitudes.

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde Jun 1974

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde

Dissertations

A comprehensive theory of multiple measurements for the optimum on-line state estimation and parameter identification in a class of noisy, dynamic distributed systems, is developed in this study. Often in practical monitoring and control problems, accurate measurements of a critical variable are not available in a desired form or at a desired sampling rate. Rather, noisy independent measurements of related forms of the variable may be available at different sampling rates. Multiple measurements theory thus involves the optimum weighting and combination of different types of available measurements. One of the contributions of this work is the development of a unique …

The spectra, vibration and assignments of the observed frequencies of 2-amino-, and 4-ethylpyridines are presented for the first time. The infrared data for 2-fluoropyridine is combined with the previously reported Raman data of Stephenson and Voelz to allow complete vibrational assignments for this compound for the first time. Frequency assignments for the other molecules are re-examined and where necessary changes and/or additions in frequency assignments …

The Study On The Soot Formation Of Hydrocarbon Flames, Yih-Jian Wu Jun 1974

The Study On The Soot Formation Of Hydrocarbon Flames, Yih-Jian Wu

Theses

Carbon formation during the quenching of low-pressure premixed hydrocarbon flames was studied using rapid-scanning optical and mass spectroscopy. Experimental techniques were developed and it was found that the tendency to form soot was a function of the hydrocarbon chain length. These results are relevant to the design of restartable space engines in which the use of hydrocarbon fuels is contemplated because the formation of soot in space will result in the formation of a shroud around the spacecraft which will adversely affect sensing by optical means.

Solvents Screening For Hydrocarbons Separation Of Close Molar Volumes, Dilip K. Kapasi Jun 1974
