Report No. 1 On A Water-Bound, Dense-Graded Aggregate Base, Ellis G. Williams

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Favorable experience with dense-graded bases containing calcium chloride created interest in similar mixtures containing only water as a bonding agent. As a result of this interest, a project for base and surface construction was set up on the Phil-Pine Grove Road in Casey County to permit study of this method of base construction. The work was carried out during the period of August to October, 1953.

The pavement, which is 11.62 mi. long, was constructed by contract. It had 2 in. of traffic-bound base (creek gravel) and appeared to be in rather uniform condition with few obviously weak areas. Courses …

B521: Containers For Shipping Apples, Homer C. Woodward

Bulletins

Studies since 1946 affirm that the major causes of apple bruising in Maine are the methods used in packing the containers, layer materials, and handling. During the past two years, the emphasis of the studies has been testing of different containers and packing materials to determine which give the apples the best protection. Those who pack apples have become increasingly conscious of the higher costs involved. Therefore, the cost of the various containers and packaging materials also was studied. Thus, the overall objective of the study was to determine what type(s) of container or containers and materials give the best …

Sediment Movement In Bear River, Utah, Calvin Geary Clyde Aug 1953

Sediment Movement In Bear River, Utah, Calvin Geary Clyde

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the northern part of Cache Valley, Utah, accelerated erosion in recent decades has cut deep gullies of impressive size into the flat, irrigated bench land along the Bear River. Millions of tons of fine sediment have been washed into the river and great amounts have been deposited in the river bed. The resulting flooding and high water-table have caused much damage to the land near the river.

The Influence Of Agitation On A Continuous Counter-Current Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column, William John Hartmann Jun 1953

The Influence Of Agitation On A Continuous Counter-Current Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column, William John Hartmann

Theses

This work presents operating data and correlations of agitated extraction equipment studied under continuous counter-current flow.

The experimental work was carried out in at agitated column 36 inches in length with an internal diameter of 2 inches using the system toluene, benzoic acid and water. The working section of the column was 24 inches. The design of the column used for the experimental work is similar to that proposed in a patent by van Dijck (3). The column is similar only to the extent that the patent covers numerous conditions of vertical agitation.

The distribution data and the equilibrium solubility …
