The Use Of A Small Electric Motor In Silo Filling, E. E. Brackett, E. B. Lewis Aug 1930

The Use Of A Small Electric Motor In Silo Filling, E. E. Brackett, E. B. Lewis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Filling a silo 30 feet or more in height with a motor as small as five horsepower has been looked upon in general by Nebraska farmers as an impractical, if not impossible, procedure. The practice is not unheard of in other states, and certainly the possibility of avoiding the large tractor-driven cutters and the large crews will be welcomed by those who have available service from power lines.

A Study Of Kerosene Cook Stoves, Edna B. Snyder Jul 1930

A Study Of Kerosene Cook Stoves, Edna B. Snyder

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The purpose of this study was to learn the advantages and disadvantages of various types of kerosene cook stoves used in Nebraska. Kerosene cook stoves have burners of four types. Ten stoves representing the four types were studied as follows: four stoves having long-chimney wick burners; three stoves having short-chimney wick burners; two stoves having short chimneys with asbestos kindlers or lighting rings; one stove having wickless burners. To determine comparative performance of the four types of burners, they were tested for: (1) time required to heat a known quantity of water through a known range of temperature; (2) thermal …

Comparison Of Moe's Scale Of Hardness With The Rockwell, Brinell, And Scaleroscope Scales., Herbert William Hard Jun 1930

Comparison Of Moe's Scale Of Hardness With The Rockwell, Brinell, And Scaleroscope Scales., Herbert William Hard

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Moe's scale of hardness as used in mineralogy is admittedly rather indefinite, and no exact hardnesses are measured. The Rockwell, Brinell, and Scaleroscope machines give quite definite results which may be easily reproduced at any time.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether any definite relation exists between Moe's hardness and the hardness as measured by those machines commonly used for the determination of hardness of metals. If such a relation were found it would provide a more definite and accurate measure of the hardness of minerals.

The Electrical Resistance Of Metals And Alloys In Their Hard And Soft States, Noah David Gerchesvky, Charles Becker Hoskins Jun 1930

The Electrical Resistance Of Metals And Alloys In Their Hard And Soft States, Noah David Gerchesvky, Charles Becker Hoskins

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It is known that the electrical resistance of annealed metals is usually smaller than that of metals in their cold worked state. The curve showing the relation between electrical resistance and annealing temperature reaches a minimum; continued annealing at higher temperature produces an increase in the electrical resistance. In the case of alloys it has been noted that a second decrease occurs at higher annealing temperature.

The following work corroborates the observance of previous investigations. The electrical resistance of cold worked copper, gold, nickel, and iron decreased with annealing and then increased, the minimum being around 300° C. or 400° …

The Effect Of Cobalt Upon Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulphate Solutions, Joseph Newton, Louis Sanders Nuckols Jun 1930

The Effect Of Cobalt Upon Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Zinc Sulphate Solutions, Joseph Newton, Louis Sanders Nuckols

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The detrimental effect of the presence of cobalt upon the current efficiency, in the commercial production of zinc by electrolysis, has been recognized for some time. Most authorities differ upon the maximum amount of cobalt allowable. This is due to the fact that the presence of other impurities either increases or diminishes the detrimental effects of the cobalt.

The following tests were made with the object in view of ascertaining the relation, if any, between the amount of cobalt present and the current efficiency during the electrolysis of an otherwise pure zinc sulfate solution.

The results obtained from these observations …

The Effect Of Occluded Air In Dry-Press Mixes, William Raymond Powell Jan 1930

The Effect Of Occluded Air In Dry-Press Mixes, William Raymond Powell

Bachelors Theses

"The effect of occluded air in clay mixes has recently become a subject of considerable importance especially since some of the defects occuring sic in dry-press ware, such as cracks and soft or granulated centers, have been either partially or wholly attributed to occluded air. According to this theory, the defects are due to the entrapping of air among the clay grains before compression, which, when the pressure is released, has a tendency to expand and cause a rupture in the bond. Also granulated centers have been explained by the fact that the entrapped air may act as a cushion, …

The Effect Of Various Methods Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Unfired Dry Press Brick, Edwin Theodore Harvey Jan 1930

The Effect Of Various Methods Of Grinding On The Physical Properties Of Unfired Dry Press Brick, Edwin Theodore Harvey

Bachelors Theses

"In the manufacture of dry press brick, the final grinding of the clay is usually done in a dry pan. This is especially true of fire brick made by the dry press method. It is logical to assume that different types of grinding machines will impart different characteristics to the ground clay mix, as regards the grain size variation and the shape of the grains, which in turn will have an effect on the properties of the brick. The purpose of this investigation was to determine what effect different types of grinding methods have on the physical properties of unfired …

A Study Of The Electrolytic Determination Of Lead, Philip Hall Delano Jan 1930

A Study Of The Electrolytic Determination Of Lead, Philip Hall Delano

Masters Theses

"The electrolytic determination of lead is one of the most used methods, particularly for control work and where large numbers of analyses have to be run each day. The method is adopted because of its simplicity and because of the small amount of the chemist's time required. It is particularly suited for the determination of small amounts of lead. However, it has been noted that deviations from certain conditions produce results which vary widely from the actual amount of lead present, though results which check with each other may be obtained. Certain elements interfere with the determination and must be …
