This dissertation makes contributions to the problem of Long-Term Appearance-Based Place Recognition. We present a framework for place recognition in a collaborative scheme and a method to reduce the impact of dynamic objects on place representations. We demonstrate our findings using a state-of-the-art place recognition approach.

We begin in Part I by describing the general problem of place recognition and its importance in applications where accurate localization is crucial. We discuss feature detection and description and also explain the functioning of several place recognition frameworks.

This thesis considers the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to provide absolute platform position information in scenarios where GPS signals may be degraded, jammed, or spoofed. Two algorithms are presented, and both leverage known 3D ground structure in an area of interest, e.g. provided by LIDAR data, to provide georeferenced position information to airborne SAR platforms. The first approach is based on the wide-aperture layover properties of elevated reflectors, while the second approach is based on correlating backprojected imagery with digital elevation imagery. "This dissertation focuses on node localization in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) where anchor nodes have knowledge of their own locations and communicate with sensor nodes in acoustic or magnetic induction (MI) means. The sensor nodes utilize the communication signals and the locations of anchor nodes to locate themselves and propagate their locations through the network.

Efficient and robust blue InGaN multiple quantum well (MQW) light emitters have become ubiquitous; however, they still have unattained theoretical potential. It is widely accepted that “localization” of carriers due to indium fluctuations theoretically enhance their efficiency by moderating defect-associated nonradiative recombination. Sound Localization is very useful for many real world applications, ranging from the military, to the fall detection of the elderly, to field biology. However, the purpose of our design was mainly a proof of concept. In this paper, we show the methods and algorithm we used to find a direction of arrival of a basic 1khz continuous sine wave. This work presents improvements to Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) for a mobile robot using computer vision. Solutions to the localization problem aim to provide fine resolution on location approximation, and also be resistant to changes in the environment. One such environment change is the kidnapped/teleported robot problem, where a robot is suddenly transported to a new location and must re-localize. The standard method of "Augmented MCL" uses particle filtering combined with addition of random particles under certain conditions to solve the kidnapped robot problem. "At certain threshold, nuclear radiation (like x-rays and gamma-rays) may adversely impact the health of living tissues. The exposure to these radiations in nuclear facilities is measured by devices called dosimeters. The devices are generally worn on the torso and are monitored by health physics division to report the radiation dose received by the personnel. However, this approach is not proactive--since the dosimeters reflect the dose that has already been absorbed in the body of the wearer.

This report presents a new low latency, high resolution and low cost timing synchro- nization technique for digital receivers. Traditional timing synchronization employs Matched filter to perform cross-correlation operation and estimate Time-of-Arrival (TOA) of the signal. Decreasing the latency of the traditional method through over- sampling leads to a higher complexity and it is not viable. Furthermore, to obtain a high-resolution TOA, an extensive bandwidth is required, which results in high system complexity. Active and passive localization employing widely distributed sensors is a problem of interest in various fields. In active localization, such as in MIMO radar, transmitters emit signals that are reflected by the targets and collected by the receive sensors, whereas, in passive localization the sensors collect the signals emitted by the sources themselves. First, a Hurst parameter based detection method for super-regenerative receivers (SRR) has been used for detection. In this thesis, wireless localization is investigated based on multiple noisy estimates of the time-difference of arrival (TDOA) at each pair of the n >= 4 sensors with different but known locations using WiFi opportunistic signals. Our work is comprehensive and includes channel estimation, symbol detection, TDOA estimation, and location estimation. To mitigate the multipath issue induced by wideband signals, such as WiFi, frequency-division is employed to decompose the wideband RF signal into multiple non-overlapping narrowband signals. An indoor localization system that was built at University of Tennessee is extensively studied and improved. The goal of the system is to achieve mm down to sub-mm accuracy/precision.

Sub-sampling is used to alleviate the high sampling rate required for UWB signals. Current commercial direct sampling systems are still too slow or prohibitively expensive for UWB applications. We developed two different sub-sampling techniques, but the two systems suffer numerous shortcomings: low throughput, non-robustness, non-linearity. The research conducted explores the comparison of several trilateration algorithms as they apply to the localization of a quadcopter micro air vehicle (MAV). A localization system is developed employing a network of combined ultrasonic/radio frequency sensors used to wirelessly provide range (distance) measurements defining the location of the quadcopter in 3-dimensional space. A Monte Carlo simulation is conducted using the extrinsic parameters of the localization system to evaluate the adequacy of each trilateration method as it applies to this specific quadcopter application. The dissertation discusses compressive sensing and its applications to localization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars. Compressive sensing is a paradigm at the intersection between signal processing and optimization. It advocates the sensing of “sparse” signals (i.e., represented using just a few terms from a basis expansion) by using a sampling rate much lower than that required by the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem (i.e., twice the highest frequency present in the signal of interest).
