Water Recovery From Silica Saturated Ro Concentrate By The Concentrate Enhanced Reverse Osmosis Process, Gautam Patwardhan Jan 2014

Water Recovery From Silica Saturated Ro Concentrate By The Concentrate Enhanced Reverse Osmosis Process, Gautam Patwardhan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Membrane fouling due to silica precipitation during reverse osmosis (RO) continues to be documented as the most common challenge in attaining stable continuous operation of RO systems across water treatment plants (1). Silica scale precipitation is time dependent and involves multiple steps leading to aqueous polymerization, condensation of polymers to form colloids, and deposition onto a solid surface (2). Exceeding the solubility of silica, widely considered to be in the range of 100-140 ppm, under a pH of 8 at 25 °C by various researchers, results in the precipitation of silica on the membranes, thereby limiting water recovery. Once the …

Sustainable Public Transportation In Large Cities: Demand Estimation, Tadeas Umlauf Jan 2014

Sustainable Public Transportation In Large Cities: Demand Estimation, Tadeas Umlauf

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Public transportation helps to decrease the negative externalities caused by people's mobility. In many countries, the total number of vehicles and traffic has risen many times in the last decades but there is limited space to improve infrastructure in the cities. Large cities all over the world have a lot of issues with congestion, traffic noise, emission of greenhouse gases, and accidents. According to many international examples, sustainable public transportation in combination with synergistic projects (park & ride, kiss & ride, bike & ride) can help to overcome these issues. Therefore new transit modes and routes have been implemented in …

Studying The Parameters Involved With Modulus-Based Construction Quality Control For Compaction Of Unbound Pavement Layers, Mehran Mazari

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Pavement performance is impacted by several factors such as the properties of the materials, combination of traffic and loading, structural capability, climate changes and construction process. Earthwork and unbound materials is an important part of pavement constructions since most of the distresses can be related to these geomaterials. Appropriate process control, proper processing of geomaterials, adequate amount of moisture and suitable compaction effort would ensure the required density and stiffness of the compacted pavement layer. The Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG) has been the primary means of Quality Control and Quality Acceptance (QC/QA) by State Highway Agencies (SHAs) and department of …

Permit Tool: Development Of An Algorithm To Determine Performance Life Of Hma Mixes In Texas, Luis Alberto Torres Escobedo Jan 2014

Permit Tool: Development Of An Algorithm To Determine Performance Life Of Hma Mixes In Texas, Luis Alberto Torres Escobedo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A number of hot mix asphalt (HMA) types, such as permeable friction course (PFC), stone mastic asphalt (SMA), performance design mixes and conventional dense graded mixes are currently used to construct or overlay Texas roads. One of the important inputs into current pavement design programs used by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is the performance lives of HMA mixes. To determine the best mix type for a particular job or to analyze the performance of a mix or a road, a new system can be developed to rationally quantify the HMA mix performance. This system must have access to …

Enhanced Finite Element Modeling Of The Thermo-Mechanical Responses Of Jointed Pcc Pavements Under Environmental And Traffic Loads, Mohammad Ali Zokaei Ashtiani Jan 2014

Enhanced Finite Element Modeling Of The Thermo-Mechanical Responses Of Jointed Pcc Pavements Under Environmental And Traffic Loads, Mohammad Ali Zokaei Ashtiani

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) are the most commonly used type of rigid pavement systems and the accurate modeling of their thermo-mechanical responses is of primary importance in a mechanistic-empirical pavement design procedure. In JPCP, the temperature gradient and resulting slab shape play a crucial role in the magnitude of stresses and deflections caused by the superimposed traffic loads. Temperature gradients through the slab depth can produce thermal curling in slabs and can also produce slab expansion and contraction, which leads to the generation of frictional tractions between slabs and foundation. The prediction of these frictional tractions is complicated by …

High-Recovery Inland Desalination: Concentrate Treatment By Electrodialysis And Batch Reverse Osmosis, Noe Ortega-Corral Jan 2014

High-Recovery Inland Desalination: Concentrate Treatment By Electrodialysis And Batch Reverse Osmosis, Noe Ortega-Corral

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Since fresh water resources are finite and stressed, it is of the utmost importance to develop alternative water resources. Efforts to recover and treat impaired water are happening in arid areas around the world, where water resources are already scarce. Such efforts are particularly focused on high-recovery treatment systems, accomplished by reducing the amount of liquid discharge with the intent to eventually reach zero liquid discharge. The goal of this research is to improve the feasibility of highrecovery inland desalination systems. Two types of high-recovery treatment systems were selected for study: (1) combined reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED) systems, …

Using Fair Division Methods For Allocating Transportation Funds, Edith Montes Jan 2014

Using Fair Division Methods For Allocating Transportation Funds, Edith Montes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Current transportation funding allocation methods are very complex due to limited budgets and conflicting interests. In order to maintain an efficient infrastructure transportation system, agencies must balance the allocation of funds required either to increase the roadway capacity or to preserve the existing roads in service. Depending on the target objectives and specific constraints, the funding allocation process is approached using different methods. The funding allocation process is usually addressed using expert judgment which involves subjective criteria, weighted formulas with pre-established priorities, or a combination of both. However, formula-based funding allocation methods may lead to the public's disagreement if final …

Integrated Sustainability Decision-Making Framework, Michael Paul Cole

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Integrated Sustainability Decision-Making Framework (ISDMF) is an 'ideal case' framework developed at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) from 2012 to present to provide the most comprehensive and concise sustainability strategy and decision-making template available.

Sustainable decision-making improves community Quality of Life, but is often beyond the reach of the majority. A framework that is most approachable, actionable, and adoptable can accelerate convergence on and continued operation of a sustainable solution. Research confirms that published frameworks continuously emerge, and are infinite in number. Iterations benefit from prior work, and contribution occurs when an 'ideal case' is envisioned, best …

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady Jan 2014

Why Ricker Wavelets Are Successful In Processing Seismic Data: Towards A Theoretical Explanation, Afshin Gholamy Salehabady

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In many engineering applications ranging from engineering seismology to petroleum engineering and civil engineering, processing seismic data plays a key role. In processing seismic data, it turns out to be very efficient to describe the signal's spectrum as a linear combination of Ricker wavelet spectra.

In this Thesis, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical efficiency. Specifically, signal propagation through several layers is discussed, and it is shown that the Ricker wavelet is the simplest non-trivial solution for the corresponding data processing problem, under the condition that the described properties of the approximation family are satisfied.
