Numerical Analysis Of Single Tank Thermocline Thermal Storage System For Concentrated Solar Power Plant, Samia Afrin Jan 2012

Numerical Analysis Of Single Tank Thermocline Thermal Storage System For Concentrated Solar Power Plant, Samia Afrin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The overall efficiency of a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant depends on the effectiveness of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system. A Single tank TES system has potential to provide effective solution. In a single tank TES system, a thermocline region, which produces the temperature gradient between hot and cold storage fluid by density difference, is used. Preservation of this thermocline region in the tank during charging and discharging cycles depends on the uniformity of the velocity profile at any horizontal plane. One of the major challenges for the single tank thermocline is actually maintaining the thermocline region in the tank, …

The Application Of Fuzzy Granular Computing For The Analysis Of Human Dynamic Behavior In 3d Space, Murad Mohammad Alaqtash Jan 2012

The Application Of Fuzzy Granular Computing For The Analysis Of Human Dynamic Behavior In 3d Space, Murad Mohammad Alaqtash

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Human dynamic behavior in space is very complex in that it involves many physical, perceptual and motor aspects. It is tied together at a sensory level by linkages between vestibular, visual and somatosensory information that develop through experience of inertial and gravitational reaction forces. Coordinated movement emerges from the interplay among descending output from the central nervous system, sensory input from the body and environment, muscle dynamics, and the emergent dynamics of the whole neuromusculoskeletal system.

There have been many attempts to directly capture the activities of the neuronal system in human locomotion without the ability to clarify how the …

Selection Of Sustainable Rigid Pavement Using The Mechanistic-Emperical Pavement Design Guide, Laith Ali Al Sabty

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A new pavement design guide called "Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (ME-PDG)" has been developed for design and rehabilitation of pavements. The guide uses general characteristics, traffic, environmental conditions, and pavement structure information to estimate pavement life. ME-PDG is a comprehensive program which requires significant number of inputs and time to analyze and predict pavement performance.

In El Paso, Texas most of the urban highways are constructed as Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP). Although commonly placed, the design life of CRCP pavements is rarely realized. In addition, the cost of constructing CRCP is significantly higher than the Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement …

Video Mosaicing Using Inertial Sensors, Arturo Maya Pereyra Jan 2012

Video Mosaicing Using Inertial Sensors, Arturo Maya Pereyra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A method to reduce the process complexity of Video Mosaicing could rely on information concerning the orientation of the camera instead of image feature tracking. Inertial sensors (e.g. accelerometers and gyros) could form part of a low cost motion based technology which can be used in this case and this thesis details an approach for Video Mosaicing based on such technology that requires non-computationally intensive algorithms.

Ozone Studies In The Paso Del Norte Region, Fernando Becerra-Davila

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Paso del Norte region forms the largest contiguous bi-national conglomerate on the US-Mexico border. With a combined population of around 2 million inhabitants, the Paso del Norte region is isolated, more than 500 km away from the nearest urban area of comparable size, thus making it an ideal location for air quality studies of an isolated urban environment.

The meteorological conditions leading to a high ozone episode in this region, such as the historical ozone episode of June 2006, are analyzed. It is well known that stagnation and minimal winds, high temperatures, and pressure ridges over the region are …

Development Of A Multi-Material, Multi-Technology Fdm System For Process Improvement Experimentation, David Espalin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Over the last three decades, developments within the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) have resulted in novel technologies capable of producing highly customized, complex part geometries in a fraction of the lead time required by traditional manufacturing methods (e.g., injection molding, metal casting). In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM), a material extrusion AM process, can produce parts using production-grade thermoplastics like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polycarbonate, and polyetherimide. Additionally, non-commercial materials (e.g., polycaprolactone, ceramic loaded polymers, carbon nanotube loaded polymers) have been processed using FDM in part to demonstrate the potential diversity in material selection.

Recently, a myriad of personal 3D …

Thin Film Growths Of Znte And Cdte On Various Substrates Using A Novel Close Space Sublimation Reactor Css4, Damian Marrufo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Thin films of CdTe have been grown on CdS in a variety of methods for use in thin film photovoltaic systems. Limits to the efficiency of CdTe/CdS solar cells have been attributed to defects in the lattice that occur between the interface of CdS and CdTe due to a lattice mismatch. A close space sublimation (CSS) reactor known as the CSS4 was designed and fabricated in UTEP to deposit complex layers of CdTe and ZnTe on top of a CdS film that is grown via chemical bath deposition in order to obtain a CdTe photovoltaic. Unfortunately, the original design and …

Development Of An Electronic Vehicle Miles Travelled Toll Model, Marketa Vavrova Jan 2012

Development Of An Electronic Vehicle Miles Travelled Toll Model, Marketa Vavrova

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents the reasons why the fuel tax is no longer a viable source of revenues and suggests new sources of funding. One possibility is to replace the fuel tax with a distance-based toll applied nationwide. Vehicle miles travelled (VMT) fee is compared to the fuel tax, and the relationship between road infrastructure spending and fuel taxation in the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) is explored. Also the European approach to taxation and tolling is described and compared to the situation in Texas.

The development of a statewide distance-based toll model to estimate the feasibility of …

A Study Of International Wastewater Challenges And Policy In The Tijuana River Watershed, Gloria Ann Villaverde Jan 2012

A Study Of International Wastewater Challenges And Policy In The Tijuana River Watershed, Gloria Ann Villaverde

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Since the 1930s, untreated and undertreated sewage from Tijuana, Baja California, México has been released into the Tijuana River Watershed causing contamination of the water supply, crops, the Tijuana Estuary and California beaches. Passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has exacerbated the problem by causing population and industrial growth explosions for which there have been insufficient services to meet the needs of the people. The waters of the Tijuana River flow (from México) north over the International Border, into the Tijuana Estuary, discharge out to the Pacific Ocean and often flow north, up the California Coast; therefore, …

The Effects Of Uncommon Silicides On The Oxidation Of Alloys From The Nb-Cr-Si System, Daniel Brendan Voglewede Jan 2012

The Effects Of Uncommon Silicides On The Oxidation Of Alloys From The Nb-Cr-Si System, Daniel Brendan Voglewede

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Niobium based alloys are being tapped as potential successors to current nickel base superalloys in high temperature applications. In the aerospace industry, high temperature materials are constantly being pushed to higher temperature regimes in order to improve engine efficiency however current superalloys cannot be pushed further due to melting temperature limitations. Niobium, being a refractory metal, can withstand much higher temperatures than nickel however its oxidation properties are woefully inadequate.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether increased silicon additions can improve niobium oxidation properties by: forming ternary silicides with better oxidation properties and by preventing the formation …
